Gladius?

Post by noel »

RPG Strategy game for all console platforms from Lucasarts. Gladiatorial (is that even a word?) combat with reflex based special moves. It's getting pretty good reviews from most sites. Is anyone playing it?

I'd buy it. It's too long for a rental.

I like it quite a bit. There's 2 campaigns you can play through and the gameplay is pretty fun. I am not a huge fan of the swing meters because they dilute the strategy somewhat (balancing tactics on how good your timing is is kind of gay) and instead of getting to look at the cool graphics you spend a lot of time staring at the swing meters. There's a ton of different items and stuff but unfortunately only equipping different weapons/shields/helmets make you look any different. There's also dozens and dozens of different classes. Gladitorial combat is fun but some of the contests you play (instead of just killing everyone) are very gimmicky and unbalanced.

If you're looking for only one strategy RPG though then I would pick up Disgaea on PS2 first, and then Gladius second. There is no better strategy RPG in the world than Disgaea.

Gladius has some of the most horrendous loading I have ever seen. It takes forever to do ANYTHING at all. You want to fight in a tournament? First go thru about 5 or 6 screens (go by quick but still annoying) and then wait forever for the battle to load, then once in battle, have fun waiting for your turn in battle. Or even more fun, summon something, jesus.
You want to look at your menu? Loading. You want a random battle? Wait for loading about 10 times longer then any other rpg. You want to get a good look at your crappy looking character? Loading! Thank god you dont have to wait for images.

Then you have attacking, with timed attacks. How much more annoying can it get? And its not just an annoyance, battles could ride on your timing.
The more powerfull the attack, the more times you need to do timed attacks. This game is just one big giant annoyance. So bad I made a topic trying to exchange the rental. And what tops it off is that when I decided I will not try to beat this game, it was so new that there were no gameshark codes out.

I can honestly say that I think it is the worst rpg on the ps2.

I have really enjoyed the game. . .I am in the 2nd phase of the game which is still early, but have really enjoyed it. Early on, there were actually some battles that I had to try multiple times to win, but now that I am getting the hang of it, I can usually win pretty handily. I even like the wing meters cuz it brings a little something into it other than point and click. I would buy it. . .er. . .I did buy it.
