Im looking to buy a good, newer PC RPG to hold me over for a little bit. Something along the lines of creating a charicter, leveling it up (party optional) and nothing purely turn based...a good storyline would be badass, anything from the lines of baldurs gate, morrowind, to KOTOR would work...anyone know of any good new titles? I havnt been able to find anything, or at least anything im not sceptical about
Neverwinter Nights
not technically new, but they did just release a new expansion pack, and it's just a kickass game.

NWN is very similar to the Baulder's Gate series. Developed by the same company. It also runs off the AD&D rules. But I've always like it more than the Baulder's Gate games.

Just dont download it from a p2p or something, I tried but the messages are really screwed up, almost to the unplayable pointKargyle wrote:The first Deus Ex is a kind of hybrid FPS/RPG. NWN rocks.
The latest expansion (Hordes of the Underdark) was one of the most satifying RPGs I've ever played. There's so much diversity in it that you really need to play through the campaign at least 3-4 times. There's class specific items/quests and encounters can play completely different depending on the class you are playing and the henchmen you choose. Hardcore rules (difficulty) is awesome.

You can start any campaign with any saved character.
The NWN original campaign (OC) is intended for 'newbie' characters and will level you up to 17-20 by the end of it. Level 20 is the max.
The second expansion is also designed for newbie characters to start. Being quite a bit shorter than the OC you will only reach about level 15-17 by the end of it.. and mostly due to some very high XP reward quests in the 2nd and 3rd modules.
The newest campaign is designed to start for characters level 15+.
You can start off as low as level 12 but it wil be near-impossible.
If you fast-track through the campaign (ie: skip a LOT of dialoge and cutscenes, bypass non-crucial sidequests/plotlines) you could likely finish it up in about 20-25 hours. Clearing out every nook and cranny, finishing every possible side-quest and following every sub-plot could probably draw out the campain to 50+ hours.
As for the difficulty, you can make the game as difficult or as easy as you want. I started one HoTU campaign with a level 14 (10 Bard/4 Red Dragon) using Hardcore rules and hired no henchmen.... it was fucking ROUGH. I was forced to grab a couple of henchmen for some of the more difficult encounters (like Vixthra).
I would recommend playing through the OC at least once before tackling HoTU. There are a number of relationships, characters and plot threads that are revisited in HoTU. Some of the dialoges you'll have with certain characters will seem nonsensical if you are not familiar with the OC.
There is a deluge of user-created mods (modules, not modifications) and even some persistant worlds. The replayability of NWN is virtually limitless.

I started HotU at 13. I played on easy, but there were still some major challenges. The hardest encounter for me was Vex'Thras(sp?) the Vampire demi-god. My god that thing is evil. I ended up giving up on it, I don't think I was high enough at the time of that encounter. I barely killed him, and well he doesnt stay dead...

Hehe, the Vix'Thra encounter is brutal the first time through.... The phylactery in the back room is the secret to making the encounter much more manageable.... the first time I won, I took 15 minutes and actually picked up all the coin loot on the floor of his lair.

Vae, I gave up because I didnt even see that there was anything in the back of his cave. I thought I had to kill all 4 spawns, and I knew that I could not do that, I thought I could come back in a few levels and try, but by the time I got a few levels...I was in the 3rd chapter, bah!
Dunno how I missed the phylactary in the back. It was about 3am when I got to Vix'Thras though .

Haven't ever played NWN, but out of curiosity does the Temple of Elemental Evil begin in the Village of Hommlet? I may have to get the game just for the nostalgia factor heheh.

I've been hooked on Wizardry 8 for the past month now. The game is a few years old but it's truly incredible. Excellent voice acting, awesome weapons to be found, great spells and some very nice graphics. The battles can get tedious and repetitive at times but overall, I think it's a great sleeper RPG.
