City of Heroes Closed Beta About To Begin!

Post by Ogbar »

Finally!

http://www.coh.com/closed_beta.html
It’s no secret that Cryptic Studios and NCsoft have been working hard on City of Heroes over the past months. The game is definitely coming along at a great pace– and now it’s time to enlist our loyal community to help make City of Heroes the best game it can be!

Within the next couple of weeks, the first batch of Public Beta invites will go out to community members who previously registered on the City of Heroes Forums. These invitations are based on a number of factors, beginning with original signup date. A chunk of those first registered for the forums will be plucked from our database, checked for recent activity, and then invited randomly in groups of 100. The process will start slowly and ramp up, but eventually, everyone registered on the City of Heroes forums prior to November 1st 2003 will be considered. While we appreciate and welcome interest in the City of Heroes community and are happy to see new members on our forums, it is important to note that signing up for the forums at this point will have no effect on being chosen for beta testing.

In addition to previous forum membership, testers will need to meet the following system requirements to be accepted into the early stages of testing. Please note that these are not the final requirements for the game – they are just the minimum needed to participate as a tester.
  • OS - Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP
Processor – Intel Pentium® III 800 Mhz or AMD Athlon 800 Mhz minimum
    RAM - 256 MB minimum
Available HDD Space - 2 GB minimum
Video – minimum of GeForce 2 Series cards (GeForce Ti and MX series cards accepted as well as ATI Radeon 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700 and 9800 series cards)
Audio - 16-bit Sound Card minimum
Internet Connection – Broadband (Cable modem, DSL, etc)
    Keyboard and mouse
In addition to meeting these specs, potential testers will also need to be available during “to be determined” Closed Beta Testing play-session times and may have to meet additional criteria as determined by our Quality Assurance team.

Please make sure that the email address you provided us with when you registered on the Message Board is current – as that is the address your invite will be sent to. To change your email address, go into the “User CP” section of the board and hit the “Edit Profile” link at the top of the page.

We feel that basing our initial criteria for closed beta entry on forum registration is the fairest way to reward the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the entire development of City of Heroes. We thank you all for your support and patience! And for those of you who don’t get invited right away, don’t worry. We will be bringing you special updates and information about the testing that will keep you involved and informed until it’s your turn to play. Look for more information on that later.

Again, thank you all for your support, and let’s get testing…we look forward to your valuable feedback!

The moment I, or someone I know closely is beta testing it, and can give me a report is the moment I believe it exists and allow myself to get excited about it.

They're saving that for the expansion "Suburbs of Villany."

The first folks chosen will be the ones who have hung out on the boards the longest (read: have the oldest account creation dates) and have remained or been active there recently. It is not clear yet what qualifies as "recently active", but it is not restricted to just having been posting (thank god) and it does take into account lurking there, provided you were logged in when you lurked, of course. Accounts created now will likely not be considered in this phase of beta, though. :\

I've been a lurker off and on since signing on (Sep 02, I think) so I may have a shot a few openings down the road. Provided the NDA allows it, I will let you folks know if and when I get in.

I used to hang out on the boards but they got pissed at me when I started questioning whether or not this game will ever REALLY exist. They aren't very tolerant. Reminded me a lot of IGN. How many years has this thing been pushed back? I know it is great to take your time and put out a quality project but my God it has been forever. I almost have no interest in this game anymore.

Ya I was turned off by this as well. I did stop and look at it at e3, but thats because there was some congestion where 2 isles came together and I was kinda stuck there or maybe it was because WoW was diagnal from it (as I recall) and everyone was watching the movie they had going.

yeah thank god they are restricting initial game reaction and criticism to the legions of drooling pathetic fanboys that have been posting tripe on their messageboard non stop for the last two years. that will really help them improve the game.

The new screenshots they released look alright, but the idea of a city full of super heroes running around beating up generic bad guys sounds kind of stupid. why would a whole team of superheroes be needed to beat up a bank robber? I don't know. I'm betting neither do the designers. it would have been a perfect setup for a pvp oriented game, but I fail to see the long term interest in a game where you just beat up criminals all day.

Well isn't PvP implemented in the Expansion when you can be Villains as well?

For now it seems to be

Alley Thug = Orc Pawn

Bank Robber = Guk Froglok

Terrorist = Fire Giant

With some added Bosses for Organizations of Mayhem and such, OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of Superheroes will be needed!

It will be like the raiding in EQ again!

This time, instead of a guild like Fires of Heaven, it will be Justice League of So and So! :D

At first, there will surely be OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of heroes runnin around in town saving the banks while leveling heh.

Adding PVP later is a huge mistake, tho I realize it is to keep their fanbase once they get bored of pve baddies. Besides the game has been developed for a long time, do you really think the expansion will come in a reasonable timeframe? I highly doubt it. A game that does not have pvp as its number 1 goal from start to finish will have a difficult time implementing it properly. I would be suprised if pvp is ever added let alone fun.

I needed somewhere to rant about this. Grats whomever reads this for me wasting 5 minutes of your life with a shitty whiny rant...

Well the CoH Beta is upon us, as noted in the other thread. My understanding is that they're inviting beta testers based on three criteria:

1. Date registered on their forums.
2. Time spent logged into their forums.
3. Number of posts on their forums.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say a few things...

First, rabid, faggoty, fanbois are not going go give you any kind of useful feedback about your game. It's just not going to happen. Beta testing should be based on a wide variety of 'acceptable system specs', and a willingness to... you know... TEST THE FUCKING PRODUCT.

Second, why the fuck would I want to stay logged into your crappy forums when you idiots haven't said shit in over two years. YOUR WEBSITE LOOKS THE SAME AS IT DID 2-3 YEARS AGO. I don't want to hang out in a forum with a bunch of people arguing about bullshit like who would win in a fight between The West Coast Avengers and the Justice League of America. I don't want to hear about all the bullshit features that the idiot fanbois think should be included in the game, and I don't want to be in a forum that's just there to give the devs a reacharound in hopes of getting a fucking beta app.

If the assholes at Cryptic/NCSoft want people to truly test the game, they're going about it the completely wrong way. I'm not going to stay logged into their weak-assed message boards posting inane bullshit (that's what VV is for ;)) while they fuck around trying to decide how to make their game work when I could be spending my time banging supermodels. If they want me to log into their stupid site, they need to have a bit more information than renaming the 'flame bolt' skill 50 times on their homepage and in their forum.

This is coming from someone who really could care less if they have supervillains or not.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I signed up a really long time ago but I never did shit on the forums. I'm more the lurker type instead of the fanboi "this game will roxor" type. Looks like they will eventually allow all beta tester wannabes in though and that will work for me. CoH is different from its first implementation as well. They introduced a new story line about a failed alien invasion and the heroes will be fighting them as well. Should make things a little better rounded than just beating up thugs and bank robbers all the time.

As for PvP, I could care less and I hope it isn't implemented. I don't know how many of you realize this but 80% of people who play mmorpgs DON'T like PvP. I haven't liked PvP ever since I first played Ultima Online when it first came out years ago. I lasted about 3 hours in that game before quitting. If they add PvP then I wouldn't play it. If they add it like DAOC where it is in restricted areas then I would be ok with that. I just don't like dealing with a bunch of griefers and every PvP game is filled with them. Look at Shadowbane. I beta-ed it as well and got sick of it pretty quick.

That might actually be a pretty good survey to take on the boards. These boards like PvP a little more but I bet there are still more PvP haters than likers.

I agree with your point, and I think the poll/post on the subject is a great idea.

PvP CAN be ok when you know it's there and coming such as being in a certain situation in SWG, being on a certain server in EQ, being in certain zones in DAoC, etc. Having PvP all the time in a game such as UO sucks. Yeah, it's fun to be on the giving end for that ghost's run back to town when someone's pissed you off, but if you really think about it you've done nothing to prove you even have superior skills. 90% of the time you were taking people out that were not close to being prepared to fight PvP.

FPS's? PvP all the way, wtf else would you do?

RPG's? Have a reason or a selection for PvP, and it could work.

yeah, but when you die throwing a grenade and take out your team since you just drop it......lotsa laughs :D

Back when MPlague existed, too many refused to duel my roommate and I in Rainbow 6 (the first one) because of my death nades (they ALWAYS seemed to still hit the intended target. I think it is because of my successes early in the R6 Genre that they changed them to just fall at your feet 78% of the time now. hehe
