The difference, of course, is that unlike your examples the term "gay", historically speaking, had a positive connotation long before its modern derogatory usage.

In this case. But all the minorities start out complaining about people using words, realise they won't stop, so try and "take possession" of the words. You end up with a word that is "unacceptable" for usage by the people who originated it, but used freely by the people it refers to. Whatever, we're all farking doomed.

I think the teacher was just a little confused in this case, perhaps erring on the side of caution (as they saw it).

In my life in the North and the South I've actually come to believe that the south tends to be just as tolerant if not more so about most "PC" situations. The fact that most Southerners don't try to make things that aren't normal into "Teh Norm" is what sets them apart and calls down the limelight.

There's hicks, dicks and retards in every corner of the country from Washington to Florida, Vermont to Hawaii, no?

No rebel flag here, but I don't plan to let my kids watch "Will and Grace", either.

I think Masteen's post was before my time. Great comment though and agreed. Only used Will and Grace as an example of "Abnorm becoming THE norm". And no kids yet, again was just an example. I'm not sure what I see wrong with Will & Grace except that the show pretty much sucks ass since she got married For that matter my son (and hopefully other children) will be getting close to age 10 before I let them watch 90% of the sitcoms on the air today... probably less by then. However I DO want them to know about things from me before they learn about it from someone else. Sure many things will prompt some damn hard questions, but I would rather they hear the answers from me than some dumb ass at school... IMHO
