Yay! Our children can be punished for explaining their nontraditional home life! Go us!Marcus, teacher Terry Bethea had written, "explained to another child that you are gay." The word "gay" was underlined twice.
Do not say "teh gay"...

Meh, can't have it both ways, it's like the whole "nigger" argument. Attempting to remove the "stigma" of a word by adopting it as everyday use within your culture, while still reacting like someone has rammed their cock in your ass without lube if someone else uses it causes this kind of confusion.
If a kid told another kid at school his mom was a slut, he'd get scolded too. They're just having *one* rule about "bad" words. Her second-grader had been scolded for saying a bad word to another second-grader, the assistant said, and was told never to use the word again.
The difference, of course, is that unlike your examples the term "gay", historically speaking, had a positive connotation long before its modern derogatory usage.Zaelath wrote:Meh, can't have it both ways, it's like the whole "nigger" argument. That's the whole point. Gay is not a bad word.

Hrmm, point. But, he was just scolded and asked not to use the word, presumably because someone is worried that someone else w/ a stick up their ass will take offense at the word.
Now, if he told his playmate that mommy is a lesbian and was told THAT was a bad word, I'd accept your argument completely.
"Gay" is one of those fringe words that people aren't sure they can use: "You can't even say dyke any more. It's, 'women in comfortable shoes'!" ~ Robin Williams =)

if referring to somebody as gay is such a faux pas, then why does nearly every homosexual organization refer to itself as the "gay and lesbian" something or other?
the lesbian parents didn't complain because the word "gay" was used. the school did.Kelshara wrote:Meh, can't have it both ways, it's like the whole "nigger" argument. In this case. But all the minorities start out complaining about people using words, realise they won't stop, so try and "take possession" of the words. You end up with a word that is "unacceptable" for usage by the people who originated it, but used freely by the people it refers to. Whatever, we're all farking doomed.Sunserae wrote:if referring to somebody as gay is such a faux pas, then why does nearly every homosexual organization refer to itself as the "gay and lesbian" something or other?

I think the teacher was just a little confused in this case, perhaps erring on the side of caution (as they saw it).
Oh, and you "quoted" the wrong idiot

Because it sounds better than "butt pirate and lesbian"?Sunserae wrote:if referring to somebody as gay is such a faux pas, then why does nearly every homosexual organization refer to itself as the "gay and lesbian" something or other?
Is there an "official" word for homosexual men, comparable to lesbian?

In my life in the North and the South I've actually come to believe that the south tends to be just as tolerant if not more so about most "PC" situations. The fact that most Southerners don't try to make things that aren't normal into "Teh Norm" is what sets them apart and calls down the limelight.
There's hicks, dicks and retards in every corner of the country from Washington to Florida, Vermont to Hawaii, no?
No rebel flag here, but I don't plan to let my kids watch "Will and Grace", either.

Thank God you're not letting them watch "Will and Grace". I read that if you let children watch the show, they'll become gay!
It's been said a lot on these forums, but on the subject of sheltering children from reality, I thought Masteen said it best when he said:
Addendum: you didn't say anything about their age so I'm assuming they're at an age where they're old enough to watch it. If not, then there are a lot of shows that would come before "Will and Grace" I wouldn't want my kids watching.Masteen wrote:From my personal experience, the most voracious party sluts I banged in college were all fromer Disney-watching, sheltered, daddy's girls who'd never been exposed to partying, drugs, and sex.
They get a taste of what they've been missing, and the next thing you know they've got 3 dicks lined up, and they're going down like a circus seal.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

I think Masteen's post was before my time. Great comment though and agreed. Only used Will and Grace as an example of "Abnorm becoming THE norm". And no kids yet, again was just an example. I would let them watch the Paris Hilton Video though... Everyone needs to know when and when NOT to answer the phone.

I'm not sure what I see wrong with Will & Grace except that the show pretty much sucks ass since she got married
For that matter my son (and hopefully other children) will be getting close to age 10 before I let them watch 90% of the sitcoms on the air today... probably less by then. However I DO want them to know about things from me before they learn about it from someone else. Sure many things will prompt some damn hard questions, but I would rather they hear the answers from me than some dumb ass at school... IMHO
