How bad is this and what can be done?
I've already ordered my new PC and want to slave this harddrive .. just curious on how intensive the fix for that error would have been.
Other info: PC would boot up, go through splash screen and give the 'cannot find Windows.com and go to a :c prompt.
Attempted:
Reinstalling OS, could not recognize the two CD drives.
Starting in Safe mode .. no go.
Beating the PC with my feet and fist.
Just curious on your approaches.
Windows.com error

Did you try resetting your BIOS to defaults? What's your boot order in there?
Assuming you didn't delete the root directory or it's files by some fashion, first thing I would do would be to pop in your anti-virus rescue disk(s), or the windows rescue disk and see what you get.
Most of the anti-virus products make a copy of the important boot files and can restore them. Don't know what's on the windows rescue disk anymore, used to be pretty handy though.

Weren't you running 98? If so you were probably trying to boot from a floopy. You could have tried upgrading to XP by booting for the actual CD rom. If it wouldn't recognize a bootable CD then I would suggest flashing the bois to try and get the CD boot to work.
There is probably no reason you can't reuse the drive again though if that is what you are wanting to do.
