Mr Meiwes appeared relaxed before the opening of his trial 
A man accused of killing, dissecting and eating another man has gone on trial in central Germany.

The court heard how horror films had fuelled Arwan Meiwes's childhood fantasies of eating school friends. 

The 41-year-old computer technician is charged with murder, even though the victim allegedly volunteered for his fate by replying to an internet advert.

Mr Meiwes told investigators he took Mr Brandes back to his home in Rotenburg, where Mr Brandes agreed to have his penis cut off, which Mr Meiwes then flambéed and served up to eat together.

Is society responsible for protecting people from themselves?

In a certain sense, I think yes.

Having said that, even if the other guy was cool with it, I don't think we want to allow this type of thing to happen regularly. I would say that the defendant qualifies as, at least slightly, mentally imbalanced.

if the victim wanted to die, what he did is actually assisted suicide. which isn't _quite_ euthanasia, since that only applies to the terminally sick, and it's normally a quiet, gentle death. but damn... he stabbed the guy in the neck repeatedly and then ate him. jesus.

i don't know wtf i think. the guy is obviously mentally ill, but i don't think he should spend the rest of his life in prison IF his victim was a willing participant. but at the very least, he needs to be institutionalized.
