BF1942 And... Star Wars *sigh*

Post by noel »

Not a lot of information here, but I'll link it just for completeness. It seems Lucasarts wants to capitalize on the commercial success of BF1942like games, and of course the complete whoring out of the Star Wars brand name.

Star Wars: Battlefront Due

LucasArts confirmed to the GameSpot Web site that it plans to release a Star Wars-themed Battlefield 1942-style online action video game next year. Currently called Star Wars: Battlefront, the game will feature online multiplayer war action similar to Battlefield 1942, but set in the Star Wars universe, the site reported.

LucasArts told GameSpot that the game will be available for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. The studio declined to reveal any other details on the game.
I've often thought they should have just skinned Planetside as a Star Wars game, and called it a day. Apparently I accidentally said that out loud... or something. What's funny is that it's likely that some of the players who are active in the mod community could do a better job than whatever they're going to put together. Balance will be the key, and I have yet to see a game that REALLY gets balance right, unless the weapons/equipment pools are identical.

Thoughts?

A mod already exists for BF 1942 that does just this. It sucks.

Now, good ole George is doing what he does best....harvest phat cash from the old, tired Star Wars money tree!

This from people who all voted for KoTOR as the best game of the year :)

If it's on the scale of a BF1942 server and the engine doesnt suck it should be ok and could even be good. As long as Factor 5 have nothing to do with it.

If factor 5 is on the case, consider it a wash.

Lucas Arts just released a great sounding game called "Secret Weapons over Normandy".
It has no multiplayer mode. Period. *sigh*

Tanc, with all due respect, KotOR is NOT your average Star Wars game. You really need to give it a look. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's the finest mass marketted Star Wars Story ever, attached to a pretty damn good game. Granted I haven't read all of the Star Wars books available, but KotOR really is something special. I'd go so far as to say that I might have liked it more than I normally would have because it was a Star Wars product and I EXPECTED it to suck.

Well this is kind of my point. You are bashing this product and assuming it will be very poor when recent SW-franchise history regarding videogames is actually pretty good :)

I've played some KoTOR and liked it a lot. But it's as much "NWN with a star wars skin" as the game above is likely to be "BF1942 with a SW skin".

And if it's Bioware developing this game then maybe that would matter. But for some reason I highly doubt it.

I'll leave you all to your pessimistic bitching on this thread then :)

Have fun!

Damn you and your... logic.

I see your point, and will concede that you're right. However, since the game is only in development talks etc, I will continue to be a cynical bastard until it hits beta! :P

Sounds like it could be fun to me. I have been meaning to check out the existing Star Wars mod for BF1942 but last I read the page it didn't look like they were that far along so I decided to wait to try it.

Don't bother with Galatic Conquest. The only map availble (still) is Hoth, and it looks and plays like shit.
Forgotten Hope is a pretty good mod if you are a little more into realism. The trouble with it is that the German Tiger tank kicks serious ass, and on maps like "Valirisk", they pwn the russians too fucking easily.

I dunno.
If they do this, I don't want to see Jedis out on the field.. too imbalancing, imo, given the multitde of things a single jedi can do against an army. However, I'd love to see AT-ST's marching in squadron against encamped rebels, turbolaser turrets armed and firing, minimal fighter assistance, and a whole lot of stormtrooper death...

Then again, closing your eyes and imaginging this in Planetside worked too. If this requires a monthly fee, I won't play.. otherwise, I'm so in.

But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.
