Kansas church women plead no contest to child abuse
Saturday, November 15, 2003 Posted: 8:38 AM EST (1338 GMT)

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (AP) -- Five members of a church accused of binding and gagging children as punishment have pleaded no contest to reduced charges of attempted child abuse, prosecutors said Friday. One child died after being wrapped head-to-toe in duct tape.

The five women entered their pleas between October 31 and Friday, said Wyandotte County District Attorney Nick Tomasic. They could face up to three years in prison on each count of attempted child abuse. They were originally charged with child abuse. No sentencing date was set.

The boy who died, Brian Edgar, was the 9-year-old adoptive son of the church's pastors, Neil Edgar Sr. and Christy Edgar.

In September, a jury found Neil Edgar Sr., 48, and baby sitter Chasity Boyd, 20, guilty of first-degree murder and child abuse over Brian's death. Edgar's wife, Christy, pleaded guilty earlier that month to the same charges.

All three face mandatory sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole for 20 years, and could face additional time on the child abuse charges. Sentencing in that case is set for Wednesday.

Brian Edgar died at the family's home in Johnson County, allowing murder charges to be filed there. The church, God's Creation Outreach Ministry, is located in Wyandotte County, and five church members all live in the county.

The five church members were accused of abusing the Edgar's three adopted children, including Brian, and a 12-year-old boy who knew the family.

Renita Allen-Jackson and Barbara Clark pleaded no contest to two counts of attempted child abuse. Neil Edgar's sister, Julia Edgar-Montgomery, Idella Horton and Patricia Walker pleaded no contest to one count of attempted child abuse. In addition to the murder charges, Christy Edgar and Boyd face abuse charges in Wyandotte County.

Members of the church disciplined the children by hogtying them and leaving them in that position overnight, Tomasic has said.

Prosecutors have said Brian Edgar was being punished for stealing cookies December 29 when he was wrapped in duct tape with only his nose uncovered. He was left overnight and suffocated on his own vomit.
For the life of me I will never understand how a person, adult person can do these types of things to children. I couldn't help but cry when I read that last paragraph.
I hope she goes to prison and I hope the other women put her in a lot of pain for a long time.
Safe Travels,

Jesus fucking Christ that's awful.
The plea-bargain alluded to in the first sentence is a disgrace as well.

this kind of stuff is not that rare. there was a pretty well covered incident like this in a church in Atlanta.

they tend to be stand alone type churches (ie not part of a larger denomination like Catholic, Presbyterian, etc), where the head preacher has a pretty strong personality and is in control of most of the executive functions of the church. and of course lower income, poorly educated correlates as well.

It kills me to see children abused. I can't even begin to understand how an adult could hurt a kid and not think "What the hell am I doing?" How could these people leave that boy tied up all night and not think twice about it? I just don't understand.

I wish the punishments were harsher for child abusers/molesters. Let them pay for ruining another's life, because though the physical abuse may be over for the child, in many cases the long term effects last a lifetime.

Being a parent, even if I wasn't religious, I can NOT understand this... People who hurt children for any reason need the same or worse done to them... which of course probably already happend to them when they were a child but that is another story..

Sure I got a couple of switching, literally two, that left whilps for an hour or so. But you know what? I NEVER did those again and in both cases it was a last resort and my life was in danger from the activity. One was continaully playing to close to one of the busiest streets in my home town... having a child of my own the only thing I can think of that would allow me to physically punish him would be just that, something endangering his life if he continued to do it AND only as a last resort.

Of course we shouldn't consider physical punishment like spanking with a belt or a switch any comparison for this. What they did was torture plain and simple. In the news recently a little girl died in a fire b/c she was CHAINED to the bed and they couldn't get her out... they said she was "mentally challenged" hmm... one look at the parents and you could tell where the channege came from.

Personally I'm a pretty easygoing guy and always been very compasionate, empathetic and have had a lot of love to give. But I NEVER knew I could love someone so much until my son was born. Those of you soon to be parents will know what I mean :) (Voronwe). Its the greatest, sometimes difficult but nothing else compares.

The fact that some people can be so ignorant and cruel is byond my comprehension except that these stories make me want to drive up to Kansas and do the same to them... thinking of how that little boy suffered... makes me almost in favor of people having to take a test before becoming parents... almost

Luckly Joseph is at a DayCare which is on our campus and I can walk over and see him at any time... think I may do that right now.

He stole a fucking cookie and these people killed him. He was only nine years old. Words cannot describe what should be done to people like this. This story has brought a tear to my eye.

If you asked them I would bet the farm they say something along the lines of "You have to be cruel to be kind". That may be true but I think they took the cruelty way WAY beyond anything a sane human would do.
Just like that Tranquility Bay and Tough Love bullshit.

Man's inhumanity to man seems to be a universal constant. It is goddamn sickening what some people are capable of and then have no remorse due to their own twisted view of the world.

Part of it is ignorance from the word go and people misusing Religion to justify their sick ways.

Example: The ROD in ancient Isreal was a staff with markings on it to help children learn Hebrew and their numbers. All characters in Hebrew have a corresponding number which is where a lot of numerology comes from. Thus "Spare the rod and spoil the child" meant that if you don't TEACH your children you will spoil them. However the ROD as far as most uneducated inbreds think of it is a stick to beat your kids with if they don't act the way YOU want... BIGGGGGG Difference. Somewhere at sometime someone misinterperted that scripture and thus seemingly justified the use for physical punishment for just about every minor infraction a child could make for hundreds of years (including most people's understanding today).
