Copy Protected CD's

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

So I bought some new CDs. Four of them. Two of these CDs have a nice little label on the front saying 'Copy Controlled'.

What this basically means is that they're a worse quality than regular CDs, and have reduced practical use for me: I can't play these fuckers on my old Discman - it refuses to recognize them. My one CD-ROM drive won't play them either, the other will. I can't make mp3 copies of the songs, which is okay - but what really annoys me is that I can't burn a mixed CD of my favorite songs any longer.

Anyone have a fix for this?

Now that you own the CD...it is legal for you to download the MP3 version someone else has made. With any luck, it will be of the more true quality you seek!

I think I'm right in the whole once you own the CD, you can have the MP3, etc...can anyone back me up on this one?

What I really want is to be able to make copies of my own CDs that I have paid the full $20 for. And in proper quality, not wav->mp3 compression -> wav.

It's also making sampling shit ten times as annoying ><

Thanks, Swiiter, I looked at that site, some interesting info.

I found this article while surfing onwards from there, it's very enlightening. I'm not a huge fan of Janis Ian as a musician (Society's Child makes me want to throw up from pathos overload), but she's a smart woman.

I bought Nickelback's new CD the other day and saw the little copy protection thing on it, but didn't really care. Thought it'd be nice to have it so I could listen to it at work or in the truck or whatever (until Lynxe stole it from me).

Anyway...brought it into the office and popped it into my CD drive. The CD played fine, but my computers processor was pegged at 100%. Haven't tried it at home yet, but here's the email I sent EMI about it and their response....

** This is fairly long...consider yourselves warned **

- my email to them

I'm trying to listen to the new Nickelback CD in my computer at work (just
bought the CD today). Unfortunately, when the player is running my computer
ceases to work....well...to be more accurate it still works, but outside of
playing the CD it doesn't seem to want to do ANYTHING else. Opening Word
perfect hangs...opening my groupwise client hangs...opening any of the
administration tools that I need to use takes upwards of 30 seconds.

Once the programs are open (I can get them working by shutting down the
player temporarily) if I start up the CD again, the programs tend to hang
for 5-10 seconds periodically.

Looking in Task manager, the WMMP.EXE process is taking up around 90-99
percent of the CPU and using 11+MB of RAM (gotten as high as 15MB).
Basically when I'm trying to listen to the CD my processor is sitting at
100percent the entire time. There has GOT to be something wrong with that.

My system is a compaq Deskpro with a 2.4GB processor and 512MB of RAM. Also
has a 40GB harddrive in it. I've never had an issue with playing music
while I work before using RealOne player, Windows Media player 9...I've had
DVD's playing in the DVD drive with no issues.

The CD works fine in my vehicle's CD player...thankfully it doesn't sap 99
percent of the horsepower in that as well.

Is there a fix available for this? or am I the only person having this
problem?

Thanks

Joe

- Their response

Dear Joe,

We are in receipt of your email and regret you have experienced a problem
with one of our products.

The technology we are using is designed to ensure that the disc plays on
multiple devices. There have been playability problems with a very small
number of players, but the vast majority of these problems have been fixable
by our technology suppliers as they are constantly updating and improving
the technology that is included in the copy controlled discs.

Sorry to hear the problems you are having with your Nickelback cd. if you
send us proof of purchase via email or fax of your recepit we will gladly
send you a replacement.

Nobody expects the anti-shoplifting steps that retailers take to completely
eliminate shoplifting, but they do keep it to the minimum level possible.
Copy control technology is similar and it means that anyone wanting to crack
this technology and illegally distribute copies of the music for free has to
make a conscious decision to do so. Of course a retailer could guarantee
that there would be no shoplifting by not letting anyone in the shop, but
obviously then they wouldn't sell anything. There is a trade off
here.Similar technologies, such as those used in DVDs, computer games,
software, etc, have all been broken by some people at some time. We believe
that honest people want to act honestly. Introducing this technology also
helps raise awareness of the importance of copyright protection and that
unauthorised copying and distribution of music is theft.

We believe it is absolutely right to protect the intellectual property of
music and that this is essential to support a vibrant and dynamic music
market. The problem of CD-R piracy is having a major negative impact on
music around the world - music sales fell by 5% in 2001 and then by a
further 9% in 2002. Surveys last year in the US, Germany, Sweden, Japan and
Canada all found that free music downloading and burning are substituting
sales significantly more than they are promoting them.

As long as consumers alert us to the problem we will endeavor to adapt the
copy control technology.

Please forward your address as we search for a replacement from another
territory. Thank you.

Regards,

My "fix" is to not buy those CDs to begin with. Boycott those bastards.

Does it use the auto-run stuff? If so, try reading http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~jhalderm/cd3/ and see if that gets around the problem. I'm not sure what all anti-copying CD technologies are out.

Why the fuck would they even go on their anti-piracy spiel with you when you CLEARLY let them know that YOU bought the CD?

That shows where the recording industry is focused. Instead of taking care of the people that DO by their "shit," they choose to throw in the same lines and quotes they have used in other arguments.
