Text Muds

Post by Bubba Grizz »

Since I am no longer playing EQ I have gone back to my roots, text muds. The mud that EQ is loosely based on, Sojourn, is now closing its doors after 13 years of being open. It isn't closing due to lack of participation but due to creative differences. The mud was going to be split but then it was decided that it will just change ownership. I prolly won't go play at the new incarnation mainly because they don't plan on having a Pwipe. So, I am going to a new mud that opened last May called Homelands.

Homelands is loosely based on Forgotten Realms and offers all original zones. What that means for me is a nice solid year or so of pure exploration. That is what turned me on at first with EQ. I am not saying that Text Based Muds are for everyone but they do offer some really cool things that you can't find in a Graphical mud like EQ or UO.
More interaction with combat.
More attentivness to the game other than hitting a button and watching tv.
A smaller player base so you don't have to fight for zones.
Direct interaction with Gods (GMs).
Roleplaying
Quests dealing with Roleplaying.
It's FREE.

Don't get me wrong, it is tough to compete with EQ and I really loved my time there for the most part but for those looking for a change you might want to look into text based muds.

The one I am currently playing on is mud.homelandmud.org port 6666
I play a Dwarf Warrior named Dohrum.

I play on Realms of the Dragon still. A lot like FR but with a lot of original stuff as well. Got a low level pirate on there and had a maxed paladin before i started EQ.

http://rod.sinfree.net/rod.html for some info on it if your interested.

There was a huge thread on this awhile back on Foh boards. I tried RoD with Janx some, pretty fun, just been too busy lately.
Gemstone III is pretty awesome if you're willing to pay for a text mud, they're just now adding in all new features and converting to Gemstone IV. I'm also toying with its' sister mud, DragonRealms.

On the other hand, FFXI comes out on the 31st :)
