I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

If I had an xbox, I'd grab it to play as Spawn, period.
Link, however, works just fine.
Looking forward to seeing Sopitha's sister & Ivy back in the game aswell.
Does anyone know if Inferno is making a return, or if he's being replaced by that ugly sonofabitch that Todd McFarlane designed specifically for it?

Quick rundown on history of the Soul Calibur franchise.
I can't remember the name of the first game - this is techniaclly the third - thinking it was Soul Edge or somthing similiar. The second made an AMAZING debut on the Dreamcast, the third is going on all three systems.
It is a fighting game, but to compare it to MK is the equvilent of comparing WWE to, say, a Russian play. And it just fucks Tekken up.
Combat is through weapons, weapons, and most of all, weapons. However, unless they change it, there is zero gore in it; just OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of really cool oldschool (think Street Fighter) style particle effects. OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of emphasis is placed on counter moves, and just flat out speed. Ring position DOES matter as you can get your sorry ass tossed out in a few quick blows if you're not paying attention - instant loss for you should you do. (Conversley, lots of good instan wins with that, heh).
Now the main thing that makes SC different than other fighting games - aside from just graphical beauty - is the Mission Mode. There's an actual story behind the Soul Calibur series, and it's pretty much this:
Midevil eurpoe / orient.
Big, magical, demonic sword capable of sucking souls and granting the user untold power while corrupting him with the hatred of Hell.
Fairly large number of people that want it.
One guy that has it.
And the sword itself, which just wants to eat.
What does this have to do with the mission mode, you may ask?
Each mission is more than just a simple "Go kill this guy." Each mission has it's own specific rules of engagement under which you MUST win, or different arena effects. For example, in SC2 there was a fight against a Joan of Arc type heroine that wields a wicked sword/shield combo in which you can only defeat her by performing a RingOut victory. Or there's a temple where you're put against 20, 30 different copies of the same guy on a ledge (litteraly a ledge, restricted to 2d movement) and if you get hit before you kill them all, you lose. Or the gladiatorial "pit" which was set on a platform in the middle of the Arena where you would face as many opponents as you had life left.
As you compelted missions and got more points, you would unlock new locales, new missions, new characters, new character outfits, ect. No mission is the same. Each AREA may have a similiar mission on each level of difficulty as you advance, but it's always a little bit different.
Eventually, after defeating all the missions or getting so many points, you'd finially face off against Nightmare (the sword's holder) and once you defeated him, Inferno: the living embodiment of the sword itself.
That sum it up for ya?

It was tough to decide between getting it for Xbox or GameCube, but I went with Xbox since I'm told the graphics are a bit cleaner. Plus it'll be really nice if I ever get a HDTV.
Gonna go pick it up tomorrow afternoon, got it reserved at GameStop.

Playing it now.
Cervantes IS back, btw.
Great game, beautiful graphics. I miss sopitha but her twin sister has all of her moves, heh. Ivy is as jiggly as ever and Ceverantes is still a beast.
edit: I was wrong! Sopitha IS back.

Ok, played it on normal difficulty for about 8hrs yesterday, here's the shit and skinny.
Character wise, the following make apperances (forgive me if I leave one or two off):
Sopitha
Ivy
Kilik
Maxi
Astaroth
Nightmare
Cervantes
Assassin
Hwang Sung (spelling - scimitar dude; also, it's either this guy or a similar guy that fights Just Like Him0
Sun Mina (spelling - she had the poleaxe type weapon)
Necrid (A McFarlane production. Hard as hell to perdict, his weapon is pure energy that appears as he needs it)
Charade (an Inferno type beast)
Xangshua (spelling)
Mitsurugi (The samuri)
Inferno (BEASTLY)
Cassandra (Sopitha's sister - almost the same moves, but she's not as sassy)
Tiki (The ninja chick)
Link / Spawn / The old guy from Tekken (GC, XBox, PS2, respectively)
Berzerker (Takes the place of the minotaur from SC1, has the same weapon and most of the same moves)
Raphael
Lizardman
Voldo
I belive that is all of them. EdgeMaster is gone, but, Charade takes his place. I'll double check when I get back home.
Mission mode is back, no doubt. Also, same as before: beat through it once, and all missions are unlocked again but harder. Pretty much the same types of rules as the first one depending on mission: You're poisoned, you can heal, your oponent can heal, can only win with a ring out, can only cause damage by sending your opponent into a wall/floor, can only cause damage to your opponent by doing a guard break, there's ugly wind, quicksand, touching the ground will blow you up, "pass the bomb" (which is new: you have to hit your opponent to give him the bomb, then when the time runs out... boom), ect.
Again, as you win, you gain gold that you use to buy different outfits, possibly characters; one addition to this that you can buy weapons that give you different attributes. Example would be the spiny sword Cassandra can buy; it decreases attack range but can break through a blocking opponent sometimes. Or others that grant you bonuses durring a soul charge, ect. Pretty straightfoward, nothing that seems to be exceedingly unbalancing so far.
The locales are mostly new but exceptionally well done.
Music is pretty much the same.
Hard to imagine, but the game got a graphical improvement. Some of the effects are still the same but everything just LOOKS better.
Tons of differnt modes.. Aracade, Arcade Extra (where you can use weapons bought in the Mission Mode), Survival, Time Attack, Versus, Team battles, ect. Everything you'd expect.
Biggest beefs:
Still no "fatality" type moves, which would have been really, really cool.
Move system is still a pain in the ass.. one command will do one thing one second, then another the next.. ect.
The AI does seem to cheat a little, but nothing too overt.
Some of the character's moves are similar to at least one, if not 3, other people.
The mission map is more linear than it was in the first; no "hidden" dungeons or zones.
The dungeon mode is a pain in the ass. All it consists of is "Go into dungeon who's stages have random rulesets, figure them out, kill every room, beat the boss, find a "treasure" room in the process, and you don't get to save until you complete the dungeon or leave it, if you leave, you do it all over again" bullshit. Thankfully, there are only 4? Dungeons in misison mode.
All in all, it's just OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS more of SC1 with fancier packaging and a few minor improvements. Then again, SC1 still IS one of the best fighters around, so you take what you can get...

I have a feeling the guy you saw was Link, from the Legend of Zelda series.
Yes, he does look like a homo. I can't argue that.
It was a promotional stunt.. XBox owners got Spawn as an additional character, PS2 owners got some guy from Tekken, and Cube owners get Link from Zelda.

sorry, no, xbox is barely cool, it does not have enough strength to counter the gayness that is link.
I bought the game at 9 last night for my son, he played it for a few and I was impressed but had to tuck my wife in. Looking forward to playing it today after work. I was impressed with how the characters say different things according to the move performed. Nice touch, I cant remember if sc1 did that or not, but I like it. The freakin tekken dude is a beast, my son beat the game with him in like 5 minutes straight out of the box with that guy. I kinda got a tad upset cause I dont like him putting games on easy, but I checked and it was on the default difficulty. Either it was extremely easy, or that guy is a freakin beast, I think hes a beast hehe.

Tbh it's not a problem going through the arcade mode in 5 minutes with any of the characters so far at normal difficulty.

fucking soul caliber TOOOOOOO
Heihachi is a badass, but far from my favorite Tekken character...and Xzion bite me.
Tekken has always been one of my favorite fighting games! So, my roommate put some doubt into my mind and I went and rented this. Wow I'm buying this motherfucker.
I hear there is another very familiar special character, and I want to unlock him

Sartori
70 Undead Rogue, Illidan (retired 11/07)

Heihachi Mishima. . .WINS!
I used to hate hearing that >< He _is_ a fookin monster
Anyway random opinions:
Tekken was easily the best 3D fighting game series til Soul Calibur DC arrived and edged it out.
Link might look a bit gay but if you think he _is_ gay then you haven't played Ocarina of Time and therefore are gay yourself! Link rules. And FFS he spends all his life rescuing princesses not princes

Sopitha looks just like Coatlicue

Plowed this in about 2 weeks of off and on playing.
I'm really annoyed that Inferno isn't unlockable, that you can't change the opening like you could in SC1, and that Assassin, Berzerker and Lizardman are only accessable in the vs modes.

I think the worst characters to encounter if the game is pissed at you are either Ivy, Cervantes, Cassandra or Voldo. I think either can just leave you with the "How the fuck did that happen?" feeling after they kill you without even breaking a sweat.
For the record, I think Voldo with his third costume owns something mighty. Hard to master though. And of course, I will just *need* to say Raphael is another gay French guy! I hate the French, but not for the same reasons Americans do

I'll agree with that. Not so much cervantes, as he's easy to guess.. but if the game is miffed at you, you get Voldo.
And Voldo will fuck you up.
Raphael is a good fighter tho. Yes, gay and french, but can actually fight.
