The young and the portly

Granted, I have a slightly biased opinion on the formative years for children and their weight (re: I'm a fatass), but the views voiced by the food industries are just sadly self-serving.
"There are no good foods and bad foods," said Stephanie Childs, a spokeswoman for the Grocery Manufacturers of America.
I think the retarded guy who likes to hang out at the subway station counting the people who get on the trains could see this for the bullshit it is. One of the first things we're taught in school is the food groups and which are good for you and which aren't. But good old Stephanie there wants to wave her hand, throw down some ghetto mind tricks, and tell us that it was all a dream a la J.R. being shot.

It's not only the responsibility of the providers of the foods, but they can do their part. Most snack foods are filled with trans-fats which are absolutely horrible for the body, and alternates need to be used. I wish governments had the cajones to do things like ban what are basically poisons like trans-fats, but hey, that's not gonna happen, and we're gonna keep eating 'em. Yes, I eat them too. If I had any willpower do you think I'd be compared to the Star Wars kid?!

I don't neccesarily disagree with her as long as people know what foods have to be eaten in moderation. I'm also biased because I'm pretty much physically incapable of bringing my weight over 100 lbs no matter how much junk food I shove into my maw (unless I am in training and I put on more muscle), but people can still enjoy fatty food and stuff that isn't particularly good for you as long as you do it in moderation. More importantly you have to make sure you're at least a little physically active, which does not particularly mean you have to get out an excercise; just don't sit around all day.

People that aren't medically obese don't know that if they went out for a 30 min walk every day and ate properly most of the time that they wouldn't have a weight problem at all. Thirty minutes a day is nothing when it comes to your health and physical well-being, not to mention how attractive you are. It can do wonders for your self-esteem too.

well iw as a little overweight when i was around 12-13, becouse when your 12,13,14 you aint gettin no pussy and it really doesnt matter i guess,
Personally i eat/ate all kinds of shit and as long as i do some sort of excersize 45 minutes a day, like even just working out at the gym i can loose any fat pretty fast, but i guess metabolism and genetics also play a role there

I think parents are at fault partly for fatty foods. My cousin is 12 years old, his parents have the cabinets stocked with fatty foods and I feel bad for the kid. He is like 5 foot nothing and 140 pound or so. He was down to 100 when he started playing hockey, but he is sedentary again, and he balooned back up.

Personally, I've been both thin and overweight, and I can tell ya, losing the weight was no picnic. I was 6'1 230, overweight, but muscular still, I ate what I wanted, I would stuff my face with 4 slices of pizza, never say no to a sweet tasting food. Over a 3 month period I grew a will power, and a sense that, why am I eating when I am already full? So now, I'm 6'1 190, best shape of my life, and really, I owe it to cutting out unnecessary foods. I don't even miss it, I mean, most people would love to have a nice eggs and bacon breakfast, I'm satisfied with a yogurt and two glasses of a drink. I do find myself hungry a lot more than before though, but its nothing that I can't just ignore. Of course, I still eat my fair share, for instance rather than 4 slices, I'd eat one or two slices of pizza, it gets the same job done without 2 extra fatty slices of pizza adding to my gut. Coming home and sitting down to a box of triscuits or potato chips, I've entirely cut out. I lost fourty pounds, mainly just from eating better, and maybe a little more "regular" exercise, nothing special.

I'd miss having a flat chest with visible abs a lot more than missing a bag of cheese doodles.

More than partly, if crap "food" isn't in the house the kids won't eat it. Don't buy it, they won't eat it. Setting a decent example goes a long way too.

We've never bought much junk food, I think it's nasty and the wife got tired of listening to me about it years ago :)

The closest thing to junk food we keep around is popcorn, and tortilla chips\salsa on occasion. A side effect is both kids know how to cook. You'll rarely see soda in our fridge, usually just OJ, gatorade and lemonade.

One of the biggest problems with kids is no exercise out side of gym class.

On the 22 I will be 40 just to give you a time line.
We didn't have computers Xboxs and gameboys. Also if you wanted to play sports at a early age no big deal you joined the city league.
Now kids want to play the computers and the gameboys and the Xbox type games. They have to be very competitive to play local sports even on the city level.
So parents are to blame for a large majority of it but times have also changed and taken the fun of playing out side away.
Why use your imagination when you have visuals every where?

I got cracked up one day, my husband threw the kids outdoors and locked the doors so they would get some fresh air and hopefully play. I came home and they were just standing there saying  "daddy won't let us back in" I swear I am not an evil mom but I had to laugh at it.
So I went in and told him it's his fault he bought them the playstation and my sister had gave them a 64 and of course the computer games.
So shorty after that I put them both in Tae Kwon Do.
My kids don't have a weight problem but there are a lot of kids out there like mine that have all the visual games and don't go outside anymore.

And I want my Oreo's to stay fatty! 8)

I was a small, skinny, poor kid growing up and I hardly ever got any sort of swets or fatty foods. I weighed 135 pounds at my high school graduation and was about 5'5". Once I got to college I had the fattest meal plan available and just getting that one or two huge meals a day I put on about 60 pounds. I did grow about 4 inches though right before starting college. After college, I got up to 198 pounds and I was getting fat. I went to buy pants one day and had to buy a 36 waist. I had been wearing 26 five years previously but I had developed a sedentery lifestyle with all the junk food and soda that I didn't get much of as a kid. That kind of scared me so I started working out pretty heavily and nowadays I am at around 187. If I could lose ten more punds I would be pretty pleased but it isn't likely with my busy schedule. I usually have time for a 30-45 minute walk or jog a day and I coach junior high football in the fall. My current exercise mostly just helps me retain my weight at the curent level.

The biggest thing I did to start eating better was get rid of the soda. All that extra sugar keeps your body from digesting other fats you intake through the day. I also am just getting used to pushing my plate away at meals (I am 30 years old) instead of eating everything on my plate and my wife's whether I was hungry or not. This "psychosis" came from my childhood I think when I was forced to eat everything at every meal and I didn't get much to eat when I was a poor kid besides nasty assed school lunches. I won't make my kids clean their plates because it encourages over eating and future problems like I have. I can't help myself. I hate seeing food go to waste.

Economy of scale...

It's truly sad to think of all the time I spent outdoors as a child and compare it to the few safe opportunities kids have these days to roam.

I put it to you that the level of danger is roughly the same and only awareness has changed.

Hrm.

I don't think that is totally the case, Tanc, although awareness is a big chunk of the change. I imagine DFS would be on my doorstep within a week if I shoved my kids out the door after breakfast and told them to be home in time for dinner.

I live in a rural area, too. I can only imagine how few opportunities there are for the urban young'uns.

Obnoxious at times yes!
Redneck? nope, but there you go with the racially based insults again
Getting laid? I can easily
Fat? Nope not anymore

So you are 25% right, and only sometimes on that, this is on par with everything you say.
