Ticket Prices
How to movie theatres justify charging almost $10 a ticket to see a movie? Is this regulated by the movie industry or just arbitrarily set by each theatre?
I remember going to movies in high school for $4.50. What the fuck happened? I think Hollywood is going to start seeing the same problems that the RIAA is having with piracy soon if they don't slow down the price increases at the theatre.

Daytime ticket - 5.50 for an adult.
Nighttime ticket - 7.50 for an adult
1 large drink + medium popcorn = 11.50
Usually when I go out on a date, I'm paying between 20 and 30$ *a movie*. Hurts like hell.

But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

Well, it's not that I mind paying for a date or whatever... it's just that the prices seem to keep going up with no ceiling in sight.
In the future, why would you want to pay $15 ($30+ if you aren't going alone) to see a movie in a crowded theatre with rude people and screaming babies and ringing cell phones when you can wait 3 months and see it at home on your purchased DVD for the same price.
I just forsee much bitching and moaning from the movie studios once DVD burners are out and affordable to the general public. Imagine if they come up with a video format comparable to MP3 for audio. Movie downloads are already becoming pretty popular... if the prices keep going up and new technology keeps progressing, the piracy is going to be rampant in the next 5-10 years.
edit: Tickets at the theatre i usually go to in Orlando are like $8.50 now.. up from $6 when I moved there three years ago. $9.50 at the theatre in NY I was at this weekend. Pretty lame!

DivX has pretty much assumed that role. You can get a uhm (ok I'm ashamed to admit I watch this kinda...) 40 minute episode of Star Trek Enterprise... for like 80 megs or so. On a broadband connection, that takes about 30 mins...so for 200 megs you can download an entire movie. The resolution and sound aren't very high quality, but it's usually watchable.Xouqoa wrote:I just forsee much bitching and moaning from the movie studios once DVD burners are out and affordable to the general public. Same with Xvid. Xvid is loosely based on MPEG-4 compression, and I have a 1.5GB version of the Two Towers that looks like a fucking DVD.
For the record in case any horrified members of the Hollywood community read this and are apalled...
I WATCHED IT TWICE IN THE THEATER, AND THE DAY YOU RELEASE THE MOVIE ON DVD I WILL FUCKING BUY IT SO FUCK OFF.

Additionally, since you assholes have taken to running commercials prior to a movie about how horrible movie pirating is, let me just say...
IF I'M SITTING IN THE GOD DAMNED THEATER, I'M NOT EXACTLY THE PERSON YOU NEED TO GET THAT MESSAGE TO.
Try posting the ad on a fucking pr0n or wares site, and stop wasting MORE of my time before a fucking movie starts.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
For the most part, ticket prices will continue to go up during summers when teenagers are easily the highest demographic....it's not their money...they don't give a fuck how much a ticket is...they just whine, and their parents give them some more...
I would honestly expect to see fluctuations in ticket prices seasonally...but in general, as long as highschool children are the prime demographic, ticket prices will inflate to take advantage of that.
that's just my guess anyways.

Yep, and sitting through 30 minutes or so of public service announcements, La times ads, concession stand ads(those assholes), lame movie trivia as well as having to listen to crappy r&b/pop music shit is pure torture.... do I go outside? do I stay? when does this fucking movie start? ya never know...

One of my buddies worked in movie theaters for several years, at various levels. Pretty much you can't blame the movie theaters for the outrageous prices. Quite litteraly all of the money they take in from the gate goes to the distribution company. Thus the reason the concession stand is so expensive at movie theaters, that is the only place they make their money.
Speaking of which.. last movie I went to I saw an PSA about the cruelty of downloading movies and how it only hurts the poor scrubs working on films, not the studios or stars, etc. I found it a bit ironic considering the audience of the PSA was people who actually paid their $8.00 to see the movie.Xouqoa wrote:I just forsee much bitching and moaning from the movie studios once DVD burners are out and affordable to the general public. It also annoyed me a bit that this guy was on screen whining about how he could be financially hurt when he's worked on films most people would kill to have participated in. Boohoo - poor baby probably makes more than I do, and is whining at me, the paying movie customer, to stop downloading movies so he can get more wealth.
I think you should not download movies because stealing is wrong and unethical. If you have a problem with the cost of going to see a movie then by all means don't go, but just because you aren't willing to spend your money on it doesn't some how entitle you to see it for free by downloading it. Stealing is stealing, no matter how you slice it. Hiding behind some moral crusade because ticket prices are too high is just self justification so you feel entitled when you steal a movie.

I'm not hiding behind any crusade. I just don't fucking care. The thought that George Lucas and everyone associated with Star Wars is going to be out on the street because I DLed and watched Star Wars: Episode I on my computer is so goddamn laughable, it has driven me to apathy.Hiding behind some moral crusade because ticket prices are too high is just self justification so you feel entitled when you steal a movie.
Anytime someone extremely wealthy bitches about getting less money, I immediately do not care. Don't preach poverty to me, it's insulting.
No, I do not actively DL movies off the 'Net, but every time I see one of these whiny infomercials, it makes me want to start.

Fair, I'm not talking about money loss, that is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. Whether you are costing George Lucas money or not doesn't change the fact that you are taking something that doesn't belong to you, and that you don't have any rights to. And I don't mean you specifically, I mean people who download movies, specifically people who download movies because they are too cheap to go to a theater and pay the 7 to 10 dollars.
Fallanthas,
That becomes a much more intellectual debate. While by the letter of the law it is illegal, I don't think it unethical. If you have already paid to see the film in a theater and you plan to purchase it when it is released to DVD, then I, personally, don't see anything morally or ethically wrong with downloading it. What I would have a problem with is downloading the movie so you didn't have to go by the DVD, which I would bet is what the majority of people who download films are doing.
Those are just my opinions of course, and I don't think less of my friends who choose to download films, it is just something I don't feel comfortable with.

Which is why I go to the theatre once a year.In the future, why would you want to pay $15 ($30+ if you aren't going alone) to see a movie in a crowded theatre with rude people and screaming babies and ringing cell phones when you can wait 3 months and see it at home on your purchased DVD for the same price.
