Infinite Undiscovery
I am actually kinda looking forward to this one, the twists they are putting on the traditional JRPG style with "situational combat" will add a nice twist.
I am having a hard time deciding if I will pick this up and wait on Tales of Vespiria, or vice versa. I'm thinking this one is gonna win the fight between the two, though

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
Isn't Tales of Vesperia out today?
Release date shows today:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platfor ... ofvesperia
I don't see it on the newsgroups yet although it looks like it's 4 Disks. There's a 4-CD soundtrack from the game already posted.
I'm going to grab the fist disk of this game when I see it and check it out.
edit: Amazon shows In stock on August 28, 2008 so looks like a slight delay.

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
That's just due to the retarded way they do release dates.. It's kind of annoying. Any of the release dates you see for console games are generally ship dates, so the store won't actually have it until a day or two later. For example, the Infinite Undiscovery release date is tomorrow I think, but Gamestop isn't going to actually have it until Saturday.Winnow wrote:Isn't Tales of Vesperia out today?

Tales of Vespiria looks good too, I just think that Infinite Undiscovery is going to be a more unique game, while Tales is going to be just like the other games in the series/other action RPG's - not that that's necessarily a bad thing

Well Vesperia looks like very cartoony type anime which might not appeal to those that thought BlueDragon was too kiddy looking. I'm looking forward to checking both out. If I had to buy one without knowing more than I do, I'd probably get Undiscovery.
I find it odd that there are no reviews yet for it though;

Ug, Infinite Undiscovery is sitting with a score of 69 on Metacritic:

Tales of Vesperia has an 80 and I though it was questionable.
I'll still download it and give it a go!

It only has 4 critic reviews, lol.Winnow wrote:Ug, Infinite Undiscovery is sitting with a score of 69 on Metacritic:

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
One of those reviews is from 1UP which is usually reliable and they seemed apologetic for giving it a 75 which is the only reason the game manages a 69.Fairweather Pure wrote:It only has 4 critic reviews, lol.Winnow wrote:Ug, Infinite Undiscovery is sitting with a score of 69 on Metacritic:

This game hasn't been hyped much. Hopefully the combat isn't as boring as Tales of Vesperia.
I didn't see the game on the shelves at Fry's today at lunch. It's ship date was Aug 29 according to Metacritic. Nothing on the newsgroups yet.
Re: Infinite Undiscovery
Hmm, not sure yet on Infinite Undiscovery. The graphics are nice (FF'ish) Combat is live action so can't pause when you choose your skills, potions, etc.
The first escape scene went on so long in the woods that I quit playing after I died since there was no save point and I didn't feel like going through that whole thing again.
Has a Final Fantasy look to it without much heart.
I haven't given it much of a chance yet. Wanted to get in a little more Spore!

edit:
This is accurate so far as that stealth action segment is where I stopped. I'll try again this weekend as it looks like it gets better after those opening events:The first few hours of Infinite Undiscovery, the first current-generation offering from acclaimed Valkyrie Profile creator tri-Ace, are so out of character for the otherwise reliable developer that they almost feel like an intentional primer for what not to do when designing an action-role-playing game. Undiscovery kicks off with a flaccid dungeon hack, a tedious chase scene, a grinding stealth-action segment, a pointless escort mission, an ill-advised attempt at a Legend of Zelda-style labyrinth, a half-assed castle-siege minigame, and scores of unvoiced cut-scenes straight outta 1995 -- and on the rare occasion that voices are present, they're laughable lip-synch that even Speed Racer himself would mock. Oh, and to top it all off, the game's got the chutzpah to immediately force the most grating, disturbing Palom and Porom knockoffs ever into your party. They're a couple of creepy, vacant-eyed gremlins who'd be right at home in The Shining.
To me, though, Undiscovery is really more than the sum of its parts -- despite the badly botched opening segments and frustrating menu and navigational issues, it really won me over with its rewarding combat, kooky charm, and goofy humor. Aya, Capell's spunky, sassy archer sidekick, quickly became one of my favorite RPG heroines in recent memory thanks to witty writing from the localization staff and palpable chemistry between Capell's and Aya's voice actors
Re: Infinite Undiscovery
when I first saw the commercial for the game, I thought someone had made FF12 part 2 and didn't tell me.
A couple of the mobs shown in a fightscene were straight out of ff12, skin, model and all.

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
How many discoveries can you do in this game?
Re: Infinite Undiscovery
Played a little more of this. The Castle Escape and Woods/Stealth/Chase sections to open the game are horrible...HORRIBLE...but if you make it past the woods, at least there's a story to follow.
Couple bothersome things:
-long wait between saves (at least in the woods section with a maze and live chase being involved)
-lack of fighting
-weapon attack button is also your examine button so if you don't but your weapon away, you smash the loot/item instead of pick it up...and it's easy to forget to put your weapon away.
After the woods, there's cut scene after cut scene. And when you do control your character, you can't do anything but follow other people or run (as your hands are otherwise occupied which I won't spoil)
The main character is likable enough along with the main female character. Besides those two, the rest have been weak so far.
Ug, and there's cooking in this game just like in Tales of Vesperia. I stopped tonight at the point where I had to go gather some ingredients for a meal. There's also your standard two little kids that Japanese RPGs feel the need to throw into the game for "cuteness". (same as Lost Odyssey)
Not sure what to think of it. The graphics are just a step below FF (which isn't bad at all but not great), the story seems OK after a slow beginning. There's no interesting fighting to speak of yet although I haven't had to control a large group yet.
I'm going to keep playing it for the story. From what the reviews say, it's a pretty short game (20 hours or so with only 7 hours on the first disk)
Shame the beginning of this game is so crappy. The lip syncing on cut scenes is a mix between non existent (their lips don't move at all) and way off the mark when they do move. The main character is likable so far though. Kinda anti heroish. (lazy and doesn't want to do anything)
The way you control other characters in your group is kinda neat. You hit the left bumper button which brings up XYBA selection for choosing other characters and then their special abilities are listed on the lower right of the screen. You can keep fighting yourself and then choose their abilities when you want.
Start button pauses the game anywhere (live action or during cut scene) so you can take a break at least.
So far, Lost Odyssey is better than Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery (IMO). These two can battle it out with Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Enchanted Arms.
Looking forward to Fable 2 and, of course, FFXIII.

Reviving an old thread for shits and giggles..
Just picked this up out of the cheap bin at Gamestop for 10$ over lunch today. I've always meant to play it so I'm pleased.

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
I liked it. I was really frustrated cause I was trying to get all the achievements.. there are these seeds you need to find I think, and I used a guide and scoured the game looking for them and had one left that I couldn't find anywhere, so I gave up before it was finished.

Re: Infinite Undiscovery
This game has the achievement implementation I hate the most.
Blue Dragon had a bad case of this too.
Throw in a vanilla JRPG. Throw in mini-games at random points in the adventure with brand-new game mechanics that you haven't had a chance to practice and associate achievements to prefectly executing said mini-games.
Have the person save right before said mini-game and make the achievement hunters reload 15x times to nail the mechanics. Rince-Repeat.
Aside from that it's pretty decent. Some challenge here too. I've died a few times going into something unprepared.
