I thought I read that they go into their isolation Monday. They won't come out until they have made thier choice. However long that may be.

No Dras, they end up all waiting for days (it is a well known fact these men are not allowed to go to the bathroom after the pope dies, thus giving them a good 15 days of poo to build up), then they poop in the middle of the room and the end of about 3 days there is about lets say 10 stone of poop, then god comes down and makes a "pope" with the "poop".

8)

As you can see, they are desperate for the "conclave" (suitable ambigious term to disguise facts) to begin for this very reason.

The process used by the Roman Catholic Church is actually laid out in a realistic way in the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons. Well, until the Technocore and the Crucifix gets involved :p

I really do question the wisdom of choosing someone who is in their 70's though. Several of the "candidates" are quite old and I don't think they will last long meaning they have to do this all over again in just a couple years. They should plan for the future and get someone a bit younger and then have a strong concerted leadership going forward.

All the attention they get over this process is great for business. Until they put in terms for Popes, I don't think you'll be seeing young popes elected.

It's all about attention whoring when it comes to religions. Gotta fill those collection plates afterall. This whole "death throws of pope" to newly elected pope process gets them front page coverage for 2 months.

I've heard the roman catholic church is the largest landholder in the world so they aren't hurting for money though.

I have said it before, and i dont mind saying it again.
Most jobs got a forced retirement age, theres REASON for that. You are NOT at the peak of your professional life when you take 30 min to get out of bed in the morning and forget half of whats being said to you within 30 min.
FORCED BLOODY RETIREMENT FOR ALL JOBS.

And this goes for popes, politicians, cardinals, supreme court judges, whoever get to be in a job that at the moment let you have extreme power WAY after everyone else are retired.

well consider the following. Catholics believe the following to be True:

the Holy Spirit guides the decision regarding who becomes the Pope.
The Pope communicates more directly with God than anybody else.

If you believe those things, there is no reason to have a forced retirement age.

It surely will be a travesty if they pick a caucasion or a European, when the majority of the catholics in the world are from S.America and Africa.

I think there was one Argentinian cardinal who was a possible favourite, so will be really interesting to see how this goes.

Wasn' t there controversy about him being part of the Nazi party or something?

The controversy was that it was alleged he served as a prison camp guard in WWII.

That's what I heard, haven't really dug around to confirm or not though.

he was John Paul II's "right hand man", so i think Fairweather is probably correct.

They probably wanted somebody who was in the same spirit as his predecessor. He is 78, so perhaps within 5-10 years there will be a pope from Latin America or Africa. Cardinal Arinze (Nigeria) and the one from Argentina, will still be in the picture then.

definitely an interesting choice. he is a powerful guy within the Church, but he is a hard line conservative.

The Washington Post wrote:Ratzinger was born in the German town of Marktl am Inn in 1927. Shortly before the end of World War II, he was drafted into an antiaircraft unit, and after the German surrender spent time in a prisoner of war camp. es ist das Furhertag?

Flags high, ranks closed,
The S.A. marches with silent solid steps.
Comrades shot by the red front and reaction
march in spirit with us in our ranks.

The street free for the brown battalions,
The street free for the Storm Troopers.
Millions, full of hope, look up at the swastika;
The day breaks for freedom and for bread.

For the last time the call will now be blown;
For the struggle now we all stand ready.
Soon will fly Hitler-flags over every street;
Slavery will last only a short time longer.

Flags high, ranks closed,
The S.A. marches with silent solid steps.
Comrades shot by the red front and reaction
march in spirit with us in our ranks.

Who really cares? How is any of this important to any of us? This holds as much significance as who Brad Pitt is going out with.

On a side note:

Last week or so, my son told me he had to wake up at 3am to watch the Pope's funeral. I told him bullshit, you aren't waking up at 3am on a school night for that crap. My wife was not pleased with me. To top that even, yesterday we found out my sons first day of Little League practice is to be this Wednesday at the same time as his practice for communion, which is this Sunday by the way. I told him and my wife he will be going to baseball and that he isn't missing something as important as baseball for that crap. Again, did not go over well with the wife.
