When the dwarves start singing... chills man. Chills. It looks and sounds amazing. I'm so happy all the original talent is involved from top to bottom.
2012 is going to be an epic year for movies. Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus, Avengers, Amazing Spiderman, World War Z, and untold numbers other movies I am interested in such as MIB 3, Woman in Black, Dredd, Red Dawn, Iron Sky, Dark Shadows, and a host of others!

God, I hope they improve the effects in final post. The greenscreen backgrounds are just as fake-HDR-looking as they were in LOTR. They were okay back then, but I think effects work has improved enough over the past 10 years that we can expect better.

I thought the trailer looked great for a product a full year away. They still have 2 months of shooting left and the movie is going to be in 48fps and 3D. Lots to do in a year!Drolgin Steingrinder wrote:God, I hope they improve the effects in final post. The greenscreen backgrounds are just as fake-HDR-looking as they were in LOTR. Re: Hobbit Trailer
It worries me when any movie is made in 3D.
I got severe geek chills watching this incredible trailer. LotR is so fucking magical, and it's pretty clear already that this will be just as immersive.

When I read that this was going to be 48 fps, i made an audible 'cool' remark. I had to explain to my wife and as a non-gamer she had no idea or point of reference to how much better this will make the movie look.

Spang helped shoot this movie in college on some Sony camcorder one time. I think he knows what he's talking about. Spang, so we are suppose to keep making movies using old technology used in the 1920s? How does anyone progress? You should still be using black and white then. Fucking tool.

I never said that a movie couldn't be shot at a frame rate other than 24, but if you want your film to have that film look, it should be shot at 24 fps.Lynks wrote:Spang, so we are suppose to keep making movies using old technology used in the 1920s? Well, apparently very few care about that "film look" lately. Look at all the CGI garbage all over the place in movies now...

Spang.. Expert on the "FILM LOOK" for two whole days. Which by the way in your first post you didn't mention at all. Once again we're all just supposed to magically know exactly what you are referring to. What.. you couldn't find any articles to copy and paste in?
Most of the photographs that have been made since the 1920s were shot using 'film' does that mean digital photographs don't count as photography? Probably in your elitist dimwwitted mind they do not.
Based on what I have read 24fps was chosen based on audio criteria and price of film not because it gave some magical look to a movie.

But he's obviously someone who knows nothing about filmmaking.Peter Jackson wrote:Originally, 24 fps was chosen based on the technical requirements of the early sound era. I suspect it was the minimum speed required to get some audio fidelity out of the first optical sound tracks. They would have settled on the minimum speed because of the cost of the film stock. 35mm film is expensive, and the cost per foot (to buy the negative stock, develop it and print it), has been a fairly significant part of any film budget.
So we have lived with 24 fps for 9 decades--not because it's the best film speed (it's not by any stretch), but because it was the cheapest speed to achieve basic acceptable results back in 1927 or whenever it was adopted.

It's still photography. Likewise, a movie shot at a frame rate other than 24 fps is still a movie.Aslanna wrote:Most of the photographs that have been made since the 1920s were shot using 'film' does that mean digital photographs don't count as photography?

I'm going to throw some algebra and code at you.Spang wrote:Bullshit. I said a movie is not a video game. And that a movie should be shot at 24 fps.Lynks wrote:You said that anything other than 24 fps would be like a video game...
If a MOVIE != VIDEOGAME and a MOVIE should be shot at 24 fps, then MOVIE = 24 fps and VIDEOGAME != 24 fps. Since this MOVIE > 24 fps, then Avatar != MOVIE... in your opinion.
So just to sum it up for you, you're implying that anything other than 24 fps = like a video game.

By that logic, films should all by CHC driven and stay in B&W. A lovely little bit called innovation keeps pushing the boundaries of the film experience. I think many folks here had taken a class or two in film... Not sure everyone is so locked in to professors' opinions, however.

While I agree that 3D in its current (especially consumer) usage is clunky, it is certainly innovative. Granted, stereoscopic filming opens up new avenues, even if practical usage is not quite there yet.

That's pretty lame when they file a copyright claim against a trailer. Something you'd think they would want everyone to see.

I bought my Imax 3D tickets last week for Saturday, Dec 16th! That was the earliest the wife and I could coordinate a date since she'll be out of town until Friday evening. None of the 45fps theaters in Michigan are close to us
That will be 2 weeks after moving into our new house. My parents are watching my kids overnight too, so we're going to make the most of our date time!

Re: Hobbit Trailer
Saw this in 3D over the weekend. The movie is beautiful to watch and the story line is alright. How they are going to stretch this small book out into 3 movies is going to be interesting. I imagine there is going to be a lot of "new" content added. For what it was, this is a great movie and worth seeing in theaters to gain the full experience. It is nothing like the first 3 so just don't go in with those expectations and just enjoy a fresh new movie with some characters you already know.

Wasn't impressed with the trailer and wasn't a big fan of the LoTR movies. I'm going to wait on this one.
Didn't Gandalf (the actor) break down into tears on the set because he felt so pathetic in his role?
Didn't Gandalf (the actor) break down into tears on the set because he felt so pathetic in his role?
He played an excellent Magneto.McKellen, who has played Gandalf since Jackson's first "Lord of the Rings" film, grew frustrated after he had to perform the scenes in "The Hobbit" with a green screen instead of with other real actors. Gandalf, a wizard who is typically taller than the dwarves and hobbits featured in the story, couldn't be featured on the same set. McKellen told Contact Music, "All I had for company was 13 photographs of the dwarves on top of stands with little lights — whoever's talking flashes up."
Guess Sir McKellen's patience wore thin, as the celebrated actor broke down, saying, "Pretending you're with 13 other people when you're on your own, it stretches your technical ability to the absolute limits."
"I cried, actually. I cried," the actor confessed. "Then I said out loud, 'This is not why I became an actor'. Unfortunately the microphone was on and the whole studio heard."

Re: Hobbit Trailer
The Hobbit would work great as a single movie. Trying to squeeze three movies out of it is lame.
Imagine how horrible LoTR would have been if it was stretched into nine 3 hour movies. Those books are more detailed and longer than the Hobbit.
I feel another George Lucas situation here. (except LoTR wasn't as good as the original Star Wars)
