The Air Force wouldn't have had a need to update any of the firmware on those PS3's. They also wouldn't have installed firmware on 2600 seperate PS3's without noticing this. (Hell the time it takes for each machine, they probably wouldn't be done yet...)

The headline doesn't even match the rest of the story. Nowhere in the article did it say that the Air Force cluster had their OtherOS patched out. it just simply said going forward nobody will be building PS3 clusters in the future since the feature is no longer available. I don't see how it would make existing ones "go bad" since it's not like they are connecting to PSN or anything. I seriously doubt someone running a supercomputer cluster would update without thorough testing being done first anyway.

Sony Hit With Fourth Class Action Lawsuit

Another lawsuit filed over removing the "Other OS" PS3 feature.

May 22, 2010
by Jim Reilly

Class action lawsuits continue to pile up against Sony.

The company has been hit with a fourth lawsuit for removing the "Other OS" feature from the PlayStation 3. Keith Wright of San Diego, Calif. filed the suit on May 6, 2010 claiming he utilized the feature on his PS3 console to install the Linux operating system.

Sony removed the feature on April 1, 2010 via an optional firmware update, though users who chose not to install the update were locked out of basic system functions, such as signing into PlayStation Network. The suit alleges Sony "unlawfully forced" PS3 owners to choose between features that were initially advertised.

The suit seeks restitution, including a sum equal to the cost of the PS3 console, injunction relief, and other damages. The class includes anyone who purchased any non-Slim model of the PlayStation 3 between November 17, 2006 through March 27, 2010 and who did not sell their console before March 27, 2010.
Sweet! Maybe I'll get my money back for this PoS console and destroy Sony at the same time.

Sony and Fuck Up go hand in hand when it comes to the PS3.

I still haven't updated my PS3.

If you're just running Linux, you'll never be prompted or nagged to install any PS3 firmware update.
Only when you launch the PS3 OS and try to log into PSN, you'll be prompted to install the update... and before the update will install, you're have to click through two agreements that inform you that the update will remove the 'Other OS' functionality on the PS3.

There's no possible way a person can accidentally or unintentionally pooch a Linux install on their PS3.

____________________________________________________

When anyone installs any Sony firmware update, there is a licensing agreement that they have to accept before the update will install.
These licensing agreements protect companies from idiotic, frivolous lawsuits like this.

Sony's lawyers are a fuck of a lot better than the sleazy 'ambulance chasers' who file waste of time class actions like this.

Sony is FORCING people to choose between two features that were both advertised and pimped to potential buyers. They didn't say you'd have to choose.

GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY!!11!! I've got DVD-DL Blank's to buy for my 360! :vv_bitching:

That's like selling a toaster and saying you can both pop toast up and down using the spring loader and "toast" your toast by heating it up...and then later informing the owner that the heating part has been removed but you can still watch your toasts pop up and down!

YTD 2010, the 360 is barely outselling the PSP (2.6m/2.4m)
The Wii doing well at 5.7m and the PS3 is doing pretty good at 4m.

Only the PS3 is selling at a quicker pace than 2009, up 35%.
The 360 is holding steady only down 2%.
The Wii is down 18%.

They're both a grab at Nintendo's market, but I feel that Natal is much more innovative and has greater potential than anything the MOVE is offering. They both need to show me the fucking games already. The ones Sony has shown so far have been laughable. I expect MS to show pretty much the same crap.

The tech behind Natal and it's a lot more than a standard webcam.
Also, official price should be known at E3 very soon.

I will be owning my first console ever, soon. I did some translation work for a small company that sells gizmos and gadgets and whatnots, and the guy can't really pay me much - so he's giving me a (brand new in-box) PS3 instead. Now to get a tv... which I haven't had for around 3 years. I should be getting a load of games, new and used, from him as well.

This is pretty much the TV I'm looking at (the European models are a bit different, I think, but it's close enough as makes no difference) : Panasonic TC-P42G25 - any input (other than Winnow's rather predictable "Sell the PS3 and get a XBOX instead", which won't work as 2/3 of the appeal is blu-ray player and the fact that 5 of my friends on the other side of the country all have PS3s, not XBOXes, and I want to play with them) ?

ta ta!

edit: actually, it's the G20 and not the G25 series, but the G25 doesn't come in 42" and as far as I can tell the only difference is the G25 allows you to connect a Panasonic security camera which isn't something I have any need for.

Valve Corporation has described Sony’s PlayStation 3 as the ‘most open console’ available on the market in wake of its plans to release Portal 2 on the platform, in addition to features of its Steam service.

The company’s comments come following yesterday’s shock announcement during Sony’s E3 press conference, where Valve boss Gabe Newell took to the stage to unveil the PS3 version of the puzzle sequel.

Chatting with CVG, Valve’s Erik Johnson commented, "We're a huge fan of open platforms in general," adding, "That's something that we feel like is the right thing for customers. The PS3 looks like the most open of the consoles right now.

"Fundementally, we want all of our customers to be able to interact with each other - especially with a game like Portal 2, where people want to tell each other about Portal and have fun together.”

“The work we're going to do on Steam [on PS3], feature-by-feature, we don't know exactly what that's going to look like today. But we want to create that same kind of thing on PS3 [as we have on PC] - where people can talk to each other, know what they've played."

When quizzed on how long ago it was that the firm decided to have a crack at working with PS3, Johnson replied: "In terms of timing, it was a while ago. The thing for us that made it make the most sense was talking to [Sony] about Steam.”

"We shipped Team Fortress 2 on PC and the Xbox. We shipped over 120 updates on the PC and we've shipped less than five on the Xbox. That's something that we feel like we've done a pretty poor job on and we don't know how to fix it.”

"There's problems with shipping that many updates on the 360. For us, we kind of need to solve a problem with PS3 customers and hopefully Portal 2 does it.

"We want to make sure we're doing it right and they're getting the kind of value we like to provide to our customers. We're not interested in giving them a less than stellar experience."

Furthermore, Johnson hinted that past Valve titles may also jump ship to Sony’s black box in the future: "Sure, it's possible," he said. "We're focused on Portal 2 right now though."

Portal 2 is due out in 2011.

I appreciate the "Fuck You" to how MS handles downloads on the 360 but really don't understand the talk about "customers being able to interact with each other" on PS3 since they have no cross game chat and if they do, it will be PSN+ subscribers only. It will still be released on the 360 and PC, but it is a big departure for Valve since they were very vocal anti-PS3 developers.

Valve's problem with Xbox Live isn't technology based. This is purely Microsoft Policy in handling interconnections with 3rd party platforms as well as what's fee vs free.

Gabe's appearance at the Sony E3 I see as a move purely to pressure Microsoft to let then distribute all their content for their games for free in traditional Valve style. (Which in my mind is great for consumers and part of Valve's success).

They also want to leverage the Steam Platform on consoles and Microsoft has been pretty inflexible towards that (understandably so). They (probably) see cross-platform as PC, 360 and Windows Phone 7 through Live.

Yeah, I like Valve. They make good games and do free stuff often, no complaints there. However, thinking that they have any right to expect a console to not just support their games but to support their steam platform on it is arrogant and in my opinion, completely unnecessary.

I'm not completely aware of what console support of Steam would entail, but I kind of think it would allow for more delivery mechanisms for games to your console as well as enhancements to finding and playing games with your friends. You might want to reconsider!

I'm not completely aware of what console support of Steam would entail, but I kind of think it would allow for more delivery mechanisms for games to your console as well as enhancements to finding and playing games with your friends. You might want to reconsider!
How would it do either of those things? Xbox Live is vastly superior to any other platform on the console or pc for doing those things already. The only issue is Microsoft's unwillingness to allow them to give stuff to users for free.

Found some surprising worldwide sales figures.

The PSP outsold the 360 in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The PS3 outsold the 360 in 2009 and is well ahead in 2010.

And all along you guys have been saying that the PSP and PS3 were failures while the 360 was the biggest winner of this console generation.
The only reason the 360 is even close in sales is because of all the RROD consoles that were re-purchased.
At an estimated 16% failure rate that works out to roughly 5 million 360s that had to be replaced. ;)

Are you referring to when they specifically stated US or North American sales?
