I'm going to pick up my copy today after work. The demo was extremely impressive. Anyone else here a FPS junkie?

I hear the copy protection on the game makes it crash.

Tsk.

I've never played Unreal. What is the premise behind this game compared to others like Doom or Quake?

Same thing... blow people up before they blow you up. Unreal just had some different weapons, and opened us up to the wonderful world of alt-fire modes for weapons. It's basically the same thing, though.

Going to have to fight my husband for the use of the computer tonight I'm sure. He's a big URT fan that's been waiting for 6 months for this game to come out. The demo is awesome and looks like they took some weapons out from the last one and put some new weapons in.

I'm picky about FPS games. and I didn't like any of the Unreal line.

Picked it up last night. It's groovy. Couldn't help but think "hey this feels like Quake" when I loaded it though.

It's fucking awesome. Single player kicks ass even, you create your own team and take them through all the play modes. Multiplayer is love tho 8)

Yeah the copy protection does make the game crash on a lot of systems. Ironically you have to crack the game to make it work correctly. I think Tycho had a rant up today about it on penny arcade.

My current computer would choke just taking off the shrink wrap.

Fancy graphics and all, but no real feeling in it IMO. Weapons kind of sucked. Feels stale somehow. Was dissapointed really.

I will have a dedicated Unreal 2003 server up very shortly.. Just got the price from my hosting provider and accepted it.

What I meant earlier was, what do you kill in this game when you are not playing multiplayer? Like Doom had wandering monsters and Castle Wolfy had Nazis. Who are what are the badguys in this?

Posted: October 2, 2002, 3:10 pm
by pyrella
Everyone is the bad guy - unless your playing teams. If it moves, isn't you, and isn't wearing your colors, kill it.

Unreal/Unreal II are the 'story' games of this series, they have multiplayer, but to be blunt, Unreal's MP sucked ass. So they came out with the tournament series - same engine, better netcode, specifically revolves around the 'arena' environment, no story line, no nothing. UT2K3 does have a single player option...which is the same thing, just with bots instead of other people. The only thing you get from beating the single player version, is a free ride through most of the maps without being humiliated by other players, and you also get to unlock a few more skins/models.

Anyone ever get a server going or have a personal favorite to check out?

I tried to put one up and failed.. the server I rented had a Sparc processor and ut/rtcw work, but not ut2003.

Tried to order one from http://www.ilangame.com and still waiting for a response.

Is it just me or is like... NO ONE playing this game online? Everytime I look, 90% of the servers are empty :x

by pyrella
not sure, i always filter empty and full servers, and see a good 50 or so spread out between the gametypes with <100 ping, including all, i'd say a few hundred servers including > 100

My copy protection does not make me crash, hmm maybe because someone was just kind enough to give it to me in iso on my ftp site along with a keygen and a nocd hacked .exe

Posted: October 14, 2002, 9:32 am
by Fairweather Pure
The no-cd hack bypassses the portection check and fixes crashing. Worked for me.

FYI, f you turn all the options all the way up, you get an audible "Holy Shit!" from the game. I upgraded this weekend and run UT3K on max settings. This game is beautiful. I'd like to practice a bit more before I jump on vs. humans.

The graphics on UT2003 are sweet, and the sound is great too. I am still not sure as to whether or not I would devote much time to this game though. The only game-type I haven't played yet is the CTF type. Been LAN gaming with the roomie and I have to say the Bombrun or whatever it is (called a football style game on the box) is probably my favorite so far. Some of the maps seem almost impossible to camp in which seems to be a major plus as well. As the tutorial says, learn to move move move!

Haven't tried the new UT yet, but like everyone has said the demo looks promising.

Just got Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and that's a nice FPS to pass the time.
