Phish Calls it Quits

Trey wrote:Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I've been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it's still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys' feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways -- most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.

So Coventry will be the final Phish show. We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont. We're also excited for the June and August shows, our last tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves. We're done. It's been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you've shown us.
I, for one, am devistated by this news. It wasn't until just last year that I went to my phirst Phish show. The concert changed my attitude about the band and the music. I always held the belief that Phish was just too ambient, and the music wasn't very cohesive. The songs were too long, and the lyrics were just silly. All that changed in Greensboro, NC on the evening of March 1st. I felt as if my entire world had changed.

The moment ends... :(

I'm happy for them...they're able to give it a rest before it becomes truly a problem for them to continue. They've been around a long time, and done a lot of music. Everything has to come to an end, they are able to do it in a very great way for them.

But don't think for one minute the musicians are done, Trey especially.

I've been lucky enough to see Trey perform in the Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) as well as Oysterhead when he teamed up with my favorite bassist, Les Claypool of Primus and Stewart Copeland of the Police. Trey is currently playing with Dave Matthews, which is an interesting cross-over of sorts. The jam band scene never really embraced DMB so much as the frat boys did.

Still... 21 years is a long time, and the music will live on. I'm glad I'll be able to tell my children that I saw Phish perform. I wish I would have seen them more than three times, or that I would have discovered the music in college. Regardless, the music found me eventually and I'm grateful for the experience.

They are still way overrated, but I know they are supposed to be awesome in concert.
