Question for Canadians

I have here a shiny Canadian quarter from 2000. One side has a picture of a man (farmer?) and a child sitting on the ground as the sun either sets or rises over the horizon in the background. The man is passing some plant to the kid.
The question: What plant is that supposed to be? Is it a maple leaf?
