Cox Cable and Personal Webserver

I need some computer nerd help!
Cox blocks port 80 to prevent personal webservers. Port 8080 isn't blocked.
I want to use I.M.Everywhere which is a plugin for Trillian Pro which allows you to access Trillian remotely and bring it up in a window.
Cox has dynamic IPs so I setup a free Dynamic DNS address with no-ip.com which takes care of that issue with a little app that constantly updates my IP with them.
I setup my no-ip.com address to bounce to the 8080 port. It's still not working.
Is there anyone here that has Cox and has successfully setup a personal webserver? The firewall isn't active in XP.

Got a cable/dsl router/firewall? If so, you will have to set up port forwarding on it. Usually not too hard in new routers. I'm on Roadrunner not Cox but with forwarding I run web/UT2K4/etc servers when needed.

I have a D-Link DI-614+ Router.
Hmm I used the DMZ which completely opens my computer to the web to see if that did the trick but maybe I still need to setup port forwarding.

I upgraded to firmware 2.30. DHCP enabled. It sounds like port forwarding may be the issue. I'll try skipping my router to see if that works.

I think I tried that and there was a conflict with port 8080. I use GoToMyPC remote access software. Perhaps it uses port 8080. I'll check into that as well as I was getting an error trying to port forward 8080 I think.

shush! blame Nos, he told me about this trillian plugin. If I get it working I'm going to end GoToMyPC service. It's nice but it also costs me 140.00 year just to use IRC, EQIM and some of the chat IMs. Trillian combines all of those so if I can get that working remotely it will save me $$ and enhance my work experience!

Pretty much. I had misconfigured the port forwarding settings. For awhile, my computer's legs were spread wide open to the internet like a bitch in heat screaming to be violated but I closed all the ports and have the correct one properly forwarded now : )

I used remote desktop for a while from campus etc, and the way I prefered it set up was disabled in the router. That way when I connected to my router I needed the login/pass for it, then went in and enabled the ports, then got forwarded to my computer where I needed a different login/pass to connect to the remote desktop. When I was done I went into the router to disable it again.
Not like I got anything of value on the computer I connect to remotely, but there is no reason to leave things more open than they have to be
