what songs changed the way your see/hear shit, or just impacted you greatly, even to the point of tears?
doesnt have to be a favorite song, hell could be something you hate, just what is it, and why?



here are some recent ones for me

storm and stress : "forever, like antioxidants"

not the first storm and stress song i heard, but the plain old sound of the group really put into music OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of directions i was headed, just blew me away that something could sound like that


don caballero : "from the desk of elsewhere go"

more or less the same, but in a larger context


phillip jeck : "museum"

turtable brilliance, nothing but decaying vinyl, lots of it, (no scratching or breakbeats here)


mercury program : "tequesta"

the 2nd half of this song(when the guitar comes in), almost makes me cry every time i hear it, very moving


xiu xiu : "i broke up"

cant say i listen to xiu xiu much, but a friend gave me some tracks and i dig the energy, the way he screams " dont fuck with me!, dont fuck with me!" and the sound that follows it is intense, the song "mike" was a close 2nd for this slot


glenn branca : "6th symphony, 1st movement"

if you havent heard it, not much i could say about it and it doesnt already say

Andreas Vollenweider: Caverna Magica

Brilliant non stop 35 minutes of instrumental (new age) music. I suppose it's impact was opening up the world of music to me beyond the usual stuff you heard on the radio at the time and spurred me to explore a wider range of music.

There's plenty of songs that changed my opinion of various genres of music but I'll stick to the primary one for me.

Many times favorites are very situational and would matter little to someone else not in the same frame of mind at the time they first hear them.

Metallica, "Fight Fire With Fire". Nothing before in metal ever came close to the intensity and ferocity in this song.

1. On the Road - String Cheese Incident

My wife and I went to see our first live SCI show in November of 1999. I can honestly say after 26 shows that our lives have not been the same since.

2. Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) - Talking Heads

Sappy, but some of the most poignant lyrics I've heard. No song brings me closer to tears except maybe Samba Pa Ti by Santana.

3. You Enjoy Myself - Phish

Pure musical bliss.

Underworld : 100 Days Off

Makes me smile on the inside.

i wont go so far as to say any song 'changed my life'

but as for big impact songs, i'd have to say "three days" by Janes Addiction

what else....well i was whacked out of my mind on acid once on Virginia Key listening to the Allman Bros "Soutbound" smoking a joint with my friend in the car on the beach. we literally watched the joint reconstitute itself from the smoke and grow back a centimeter or two.

so while that didnt change my life (we kept smoking the joint), i think that seeing the arrow of entropy reverse briefly is pretty monumental.

so i guess that falls under the "shit flipping" category.

i remember another time where certain hallucinogens were involved and we were doing whipits....i dont know what happened before the door to the closet opened. i dont know how i got in the closet. i just know that i was in the closet with the balloon, the whipits, and my lips were blue from the cold.

so anyway, i shared now that i was discoverd. i was under the impression at the time that as my roomate and i jumped across the room on top of the furniture, we collided in mid air, fell to the ground, and swapped bodies briefly.

there was no music involved, but it was fun. about 30 minutes later my friend was on the floor crying under the table as we listened to the soundtrack from the movie "More".

Great songs and very situational reasons behind them for me. No shit was flipped though.

I vividly remember lying in my bed one night listening to Pink Floyd's "Signs of Life" while I was severly sick from food poisoning. I basically tripped my nuts off to that song. My temp was 104 and I just woke up from a good 20 hours of terrible, sweaty sleep. Anyway, the song is an insturmental but has some weird whispering and such going on in the background during several parts. So, I was waaaay into trying to figure out wtf was going on with the song when and I looked down at the foot of my bed and I saw the neck/back of some zebras walking past. The other thing I remember was blinking my eyes and seeing nipples everywhere. You know, like when you stare at a light too long then look at a wall and blink a couple of times? Just like that, except instead of spots, I saw nipples.

I figured out later that the zebra illusion/hallucination was caused by moonlight shining in through the blinds onto my grey bedsheets. The high fever explains the exaggeration of the pallette. When I saw the zebras, I was mezmorized. I watched them walk back and forth, slowly, for a good half hour. I can't really explain the nipple thing...

I've never had anything like that happen again since. That was a good 10-12 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. Everytime I hear that song, that night floods into my mind.

As far as high impacting songs/lyrics, I have probably at least a good dozen or so, since music is such a big part of my life. Music was very therapeutic for me during my divorce and my roller coaster of emotions found a home with an equally diverse number/types of music.

I'm feeling a tad lethargic right now, so pretty much all the music I would quote would reflect my mood and sound a bit broodish. I'll post some of the more personal/high impact songs/lyrics at a later time

ha I'd probably go with Rage Against the Machines- Freedom
and then like an Old Bone thugs and Harmony song. I remember listening to one of their songs like, whoa you can make a song up with curse words?

Id have to copy Wonko on this one, Sunday Bloody Sunday is teh best song ever.

Quiet Riot - both Bang your head and Cum on feel the noise



As a kid these tunes changed my music life forever as a whole new world of music sprung to life from here, I liked it and wanted more.

Our Lady Peace - another band I love. I really like "Life."

When I saw this performed at the Super Bowl after 9/11 I thought it was a very appropriate tribute.

I can't believe I forgot to mention that. I'm not a huge football fan (I'm a woman - sue me! ) so I haven't seen a whole lot of half-time shows. That will change soon though since my fiance is into sports (all except hockey!!).... but this particular show will always stand out in my mind. I was in tears by the time it was over.
