Java Irc Client

First off - no, this does not work behind firewalls. This is for people who can't/won't download and install a normal IRC program.
http://www.veeshanvault.org/javairc
We'll be cleaning it up a bit more - and looking into ways of using the box as the server so people can get past firewalls.
Update:
This one does work behind firewalls -
http://www.veeshanvault.org/irc
Use whichever one you like more.

If you want an IRC program to get past firewalls, then install CGI-IRC on the server, works great. I sometimes use it when I feel like logging on to IRC from work. But i"m limited to EFnet because of the server that has CGI-IRC setup on it (only linked to efnet servers).

make sure you change your nick! Unfortunately we don't have control of the server - it's stratics IRC.

Well when you set up the CGI-IRC script you specify what servers it can connect to, and the user just gets a drop down box. So the web hosting server that has the CGI-IRC I use occasionally has a few networks, but no stratics.

nm, found it!
See first post for CGI:IRC - works behind firewalls if you can see this site.

Heh, i will hand it to my firewall guys.
the "works behind firewall" version did indeed work. for one day.
after that, they block it some how. TT

How do I configure MIrc to use this? I am an IRC n00b.

thanks!

If you want to use mIRC... install it, then set your server to be irc.veeshanvault.org
Connect to the server and:
/join #vv
It's that simple!

Thanks hoss. Turns out that Larry did a bang-up job with the firewall

With your modifications on the cgi-irc, it works fine now.

Are you sure about that? It doesn't work on mine.

Standard IRC network rules from just about anywhere. Man google mother fucker.
Ban evasion will give you an immediate 1 month ban. Evade again and it’s permanent.
Which we cover with:
* Use your head
and most of all
* Don't whine
Let me break it down Sesame Street style since you're too dense to get it after being banned multiple times for the same offense.

The only thing I could possibly guess is two weeks ago before all this shit even started, he didn't like the logic I was using to disprove his point in a discussion, so naturally I get the banstick.
I've been using the same connection to get to IRC all this time - if it shows up with different IP's, it's not my fault. I stayed the hell out of your little sanctuary when you g-lined me - you then later told me "I removed it last week," which I could only assume meant you were done having your little hissy fit. You even said you were only banning me from channels. How do you expect me to understand the nonsense in your head when you PMS like this?
Grats VV, you've put a moron at the helm - classic case of abuse of power. Are you running in '08?

He was, as explained above, g-lined for ban evasion. He was banned from multiple channels (non #vv channels) and returned under a new host and/or username. This is what is called ban evasion. You avoid the IRC style ban by changing your mask via connecting from another host and/or changing something within the portions that are end user configurable.
Why he was kick/banned from those channels is purely up to those channels and their operators. It doesn't matter if that operator is me or another channel (not network) operator.
When someone chronically circumvents traditional channel banning methods, it is common course to use k-line and g-line methods to remove the offending user. This is why a g-line was used.
This has been done multiple times in the past for Rellix. I can remember at least 3 incidents where upwards of 4 to 5 glines had to be added as Rellix continued to change his host to circumvent the ban. This only prolongs his ban when the original ban would have been just a cooling off period.
Again, why he was kicked and banned from individual channels doesn't matter in this case. Individual channels can do whatever the fuck their ops want to do. It's their channel. The circumvention of those bans is what this is about and it warrants a g-line.
The reality of it is more than just VV users use the IRC network and I would care to wager that most of the people who actually use the network aren't even aware this forum exists. It's not an abuse of power. It's not a child like tantrum (though I'd say ban evasion just to be cute is). It's the removal of a problem user.

The VV IRC channel was a joke awhile back when I took a look. Sounds like it's still functioning along those lines. Had a bunch of immature ops kicking people. I'm sure Lali remembers.

You can pretend to use that as an excuse to get rid of me, but the simple fact is that I was using the same connection each time. Not once did I come in and shout "HEY LOOK I GOT INTO YOUR CHANNEL, HEHE" after your ban. If anything, my connection would autojoin and I wouldn't even notice I got in until half an hour later.
threnody wrote:Why he was kick/banned from those channels is purely up to those channels and their operators. It doesn't matter if that operator is me or another channel (not network) operator.
In other words: Your reasons weren't really justifiable?

G-lining me for simply joining a channel is complete bullshit and you know it. Having a grudge against me has never been a legitimate reason for these network bans. If I've ever connected again, it's because I'm simply looking for an explaination, and I leave it at that. Pro tip: Don't g-line someone with (Reason: banned).
threnody wrote:Again, why he was kicked and banned from individual channels doesn't matter in this case. Individual channels can do whatever the fuck their ops want to do. It's their channel. The circumvention of those bans is what this is about and it warrants a g-line.
It's ridiculous that you claim these reasons do not matter. I understand the concept of a ban, and I respect them. It's plain and simple: You have a problem with me and have abused your power to no end ever since you linked your server with VV's. Don't pretend you've never gone on a power trip - you're only fooling yourself.
threnody wrote:The reality of it is more than just VV users use the IRC network and I would care to wager that most of the people who actually use the network aren't even aware this forum exists. The three channels I use have always been linked to VV in one way or another. Great point though.

#vv mostly sits around dead, just k-moll and homer talking about terrorist activities (inside joke).
http://null-karma.com/ircstats/vv.html
From logs that go back to 2006-11-13, I see only 19 kicks that were not due to the bot (Artemis has anti-flood shit and was in #vv for testing for a while).
Those 19 kicks:
[11:59] * Syw was kicked by Threnody (LART!)
[14:35] * rellix was kicked by ashur_wrk (gross THIS!)
[14:54] * jamiroquai was kicked by Faerin_wrk (nope)

[16:32] * Aram was kicked by Thren (lol!)
[10:40] * Drolgin was kicked by Thren (because I can)
[10:40] * Drolgin was kicked by Thren ('cause you're a quitter rog =))
[16:11] * Aram was kicked by ashur (Mod Abuse!!!!)
[16:12] * ashur was kicked by Thren (ping!)
[14:34] * Ebumar was kicked by Faerin_wrk (TEST!)
[14:44] * Stabbity was kicked by Faerin_wrk (out)

There should be some sort of app (or whatever) that places a text box at the top of any VV page and allows you to chat in real time with other people in the same forum about a topic (or whatever) without it keeping a log.

I suggested something like that awhile back. I think I even linked to something that would attach to the bottom of a phpBB board page for live or refreshed chat. It would only be on the main index so not overly obtrusive.

We had something very similar to this at one time on the main page. About 4 of us used it for 3 days.
