Looking for best tips / suggestions on how to do this.

1. Casette Player w/Line Out (or even maybe headphone jack will work?)
2. Plug into Line In of sound card
3. Record with <your preferred software> to WAV's
4. Convert to MP3

I've got a bunch of difference audio apps (Cakewalk, Sound Forge, etc) but I'm curious what everyone's favorites are if you've ever done this.

BTW: It's spoken word that's I'm recording, so no high quality music settings needed, although I need to be able to clearly hear/understand the voice.

I think Audiograbber can do this for you.

import then with whatever program, the import quality is going to be depending on the soundcards AD converters + the manually set sample/bit rates

if you hvae soundforge however, once imported, run it through some plug ins, if possible, waves x-noise (to remove all that nasty hiss), then some BBE sonic maximizer(makes everything sound better), and lastly some sort of limiter to bring it up to full volume(i also reccomend the waves one), DL the waves super bundle from kazaa or whatever, has lots of good plug ins

ive been doing this with old shit ive recorded, and a friend of mine the same with boxes of old 4track tapes
