6 days old makes this old news by now, but for those of you who didn't know:
POWAY, Calif., April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gateway, Inc. (NYSE: GTW)
said today that after reviewing strategic options for its network of 188
company-operated retail stores, it is planning to close the stores on April 9.
Gateway also said it is pursuing wider retail distribution of its products
in the U.S. and abroad.

The company will continue direct sales of Gateway products to consumers
and businesses via http://www.gateway.com and 1-800-Gateway.

As a result of Gateway's decision, approximately 2,500 retail positions
will be eliminated during the month of April as store operations wind down.
Gateway will provide more detail on its brand and channel strategies, as
well as any revenue and cost implications of closing the stores, when it
announces its first quarter financial results April 29.
A friend of mine bought a new iPod for $180, so there are good deals to be had while they clear store inventory.

Worse mistake Gateway ever made was to go retail with actual store fronts. Way too much overhead and Dell just kicked the crap out of them for it.

All the stores are closing out inventory? I'd think they would just sell it all through their website.

I wouldn't buy a computer from them either, but if they have iPod's cheap then I might be persuaded to go get one. :)

Gateway bought emachines and is keeping the emachines prez as prez of Gateway and booting theirs. Pretty good indication that a company is going to crap when they take over a company and keep the big brass of the little guy.
