Defamation of character, in and of itself, is a serious accusation. Although I feel that anyone’s right to defend themselves is justified, the means by which you personally choose to do so is mystifying.

By threatening to seek legal action in an environment such as this, you are merely setting yourself up for various retorts and observations on your personal being yet again. The fact that you are allowing these people “an out”, as you call it, makes it apparent that you yourself are even weary that your threat holds any weight. If you truly believed in your convictions, you would have gone straight through the legal system, allowing no means of recourse for these people.

You hope that by threatening people with legal action, it will cause them to withdraw there previous “accusations” on your real life persona so that you can merely save face. But, the one thing you fail to realize is that most people (Americans in particular) don’t take well to being threatened. That is wholeheartedly apparent. So, I’d be very careful in who and what you threaten.

In a nutshell, I think Confucius said it best, “Mouth should no write check, butt can no cash.”
