Gary Gygax was my hero, but damn...the man couldn't write to save his life. Did you ever read any of his "novels" ?

I haven't read his books. I've heard more people than Drolgin mention his novels aren't that well written though. Co-Creater of the original D&D was what I was looking for!

I loved "Monster Manual", "Fiend Folio", "Dungeon Master's Guide", and "Deities and Demigods" to name a few

well in fairness i was like 12, so if he did suck at writing, i probably could have let it slide. Pictures of giant boobs on Morgan Ironwolf helped.

His first novels were based on a pair of characters that originally appeared in Dragon Magazine short story "At Moonset Blackcat Comes" or something like that (appeared in issue 100 iirc). The stories were set in Greyhawk, and were pretty much completely unoriginal "Fafhrd & Grey Mouser" knockoffs mixed with bits & pieces borrowed from virtually every fantasy story ever written. Lack of originality aside, the short story was "OK" at best. Unfortunately, he didn't stop there, and a couple novels followed that were equally unoriginal and poorly written. This was all at about the time that the TSR board of directors removed him from power, and they stopped publishing the books, along with all the Greyhawk material, shortly thereafter.

I suppose that given my necromancer's name, I shouldn't be too harsh on him for lack of originality

Actually that's where i got Zygar from. He was an AD&D character of mine from back when I was like 10.

I looked at the letters in his last name and tried to come up with someting it went like this...

Overall, I'll admit his work was pretty poor, but I always enjoyed the Gord the Rogue set of books.. The general storyline wasn't half bad, and he and the troubadour were pretty cool. When they starting crossing planes of hell it got old =/

Gary Gygax is a man who lacks the ability to follow his own damn storyline in his own campaign words.
He'd write one book stating D&D Canon in one book, then 5 months later completely reverse it in another book that was unrelated to the previous one.
i.e. 2nd edition AD&D
When they got rid of him I was happy, Yes he was the originator of D&D along with Ed Greenwood *kick ass* but the man has no idea how to balance out classes or keep to the same storyline.

Honorable mention to Zygar and Sylvos. That was pretty geeky knowledge of Gygax from both of you.

It's always intriguing to see what others have to say in certain areas of interest.

I follow along in that I give Gygax credit of helping to create D&D but he wasn't the most creative or original person in gaming.

I'm a geek in that I bought roleplaying games just to read the manuals and stats. I rarely played. DragonQuest is the only pen and paper roleplaying game that I played for an extended period of time. Before online games, getting together a day or two a week to drink beer, bullshit and excercise your imagination was enjoyable for me.

I still have the Traveller book. It's one of the games I bought just to read the manual : ) I still have Gamma World for that matter.

A lot of the old RPG manuals and stuff can be found in alt.binaries.ebooks.rpg (not sure on the ebook part since I'm at work). A lot of the new stuff as well. But buy those if you're playing them and they are in print! Downloading an old red cover v1.0 D&D Rulebook is different than getting the latest.

The thing I loved most about Traveller was the simplified game mechanics. Who can complain about a nice 2d6 to resolve *everything*. GURPS was heavily influenced by Traveller's 2d6 system (used a 3d6 to give greater granularity, though).

It was a shame that the Traveller computer games were pretty lame, though. There was so much potential there.

our spare bedroom in our house has 2 book shelves full of my geeky RPG books and manuals ranging from 1st ed. D&D to 3.5 D&D not to mention a ton of white wolf gaming books and random RPGs liek Rifts, anime crap, even the sailor moon RPG (no i never played it but it was funny so i bought it anyway), before i moved I had a HUGE warhammer collection too that I gave to my buddy. it was a 14,000 point wood elf army =(
