Self-Tanners

Any girls (or guys) out there recommend a good self-tanner? I know that pretty much all of them use dihydroxyacetone as the "tanning" ingredient, but the carrier can make all the difference in application and streaking. I've used a couple that were pretty good. Just looking for one to settle on permanently.
Also, if you have any secret application tips for even coverage, feel free to share!

some people can't get a tan from the sun. others like to reduce their risk of skin cancer.
i haven't used many self tanners, but i like bain de soleil. i didn't have any problems with streaking.
also, i've never tried it, but a work friend has - they offer sunless tanning at a lot of tanning salons for something like $12 a session. you just stand in a shower type thing and they spray the stuff on you. towel off then go home. she did it so she wouldn't glow during her mexican vacation, worked nicely. i'm not sure if it's really worth it, if it's super industrial strength crap or just a big jug of what you could buy a tube of at the store yourself for like $8.

From the American Academy for Dermatology:
http://www.aad.org/pamphlets/SunSkin.html
A tan is often mistaken as a sign of good health. Dermatologists know better. A suntan is actually the result of skin injury. Tanning occurs when UV rays enter the skin and it protects itself by producing more pigment or melanin.
Indoor tanning is just as bad for your skin as sunlight. Most tanning salons use ultraviolet-A bulbs. Studies have shown that UVA rays go deeper into the skin and contribute to premature wrinkling and skin cancer.
People who work outdoors or sun bathe without sun protection can develop tough, leathery skin, making them look older than they are. The sun can also cause large freckles called "age spots," and scaly growths (actinic keratoses), that may develop into skin cancer.
Wrinkles are directly related to sun exposure.
More than 90 percent of all skin cancers occur on sun-exposed skin.
A chemical tanner is the only way to safely tan.

yeah i was goofing off =)
i'm wouldnt be 100% convinced that chemical tanners are totally safe.
i think they have hardly been used long enough to make that claim unequivocally.
i'm white as hell, i can relate to this problem

Actually, they are pretty safe. Dinydroxyacetone (DHA) only affects the top layers of the skin. And according to a resource:
DHA is a simple sugar involved in plant and animal carbohydrate metabolism. The true color differences have to do with how much DHA the product contains or how your skin reacts to this ingredient. DHA browns the skin through its interaction with the amino acid arginine, which is found in surface skin cells.
So it's not like I'm covering my body in some "chemical." It's pretty natural.
Edit: Oh, and its been used for over 30 years in the cosmetics industry

30 years in the cosmetics industry means time on your side.
but you should never assume because something is 'natural' that it is safer than something synthetic. That notion is a total farce. Nicotine, Opium, and Cyanide are also natural plant compounds.
it appears to be non-toxic from what i read as you suggested =).

Oh I know, bad word choice on my part. I've done a lot of research into cosmetics and have found that much of the "natural" movement is all hype. Half the time the natural substance doesn't do jack shit, the other half of the time it is a known skin irritant or worse.

the salon sunless tanning stuff is pretty cool, basically they just paint you, so it doesn't last very long. i'm thinking i might just go with the regular tanning booths, i don't want to be super dark, i just don't want to frighten people with my legs. after all the chemicals and radiation i ingest on a daily basis, i don't think 10-15 minutes in a tanning booth is going to hurt that much.
if you go with sunless tanner, make sure you exfoliate before you apply.

hehe yeah I did the spray on booth thing once and I had forgot to exfoliate my face. The temporary color in their solution was basically absorbed by my dry patches making me look like I had just taken a mud bath. It was an embarrassing drive home.

Agree. This is my personal favorite. No problems with streaking if you do a semi-decent job of putting it on and read the instructions. I did notice that unless you get the darkest one, you'll likely want to put two coats on.
Sunserae wrote:you just stand in a shower type thing and they spray the stuff on you.
I've heard bad stuff about the spray on tanning stuff. The Ban de Soleil would be my recommendation. It's not that expensive and does a great job.
Ed: As mentioned above, definitely exfoliate before applying (scrub real hard, use a loofah, hard sponge, etc.. for your face, buy some exfoliating scrub - Neutragena makes a good one). Also know that when you're done applying, you're going to have to scrub the hell out of your hands to get the excess coloring off.. you may even want to consider wearing latex gloves. Also, apply very sparingly on your face.. as mentioned, fake tans are easy to spot if you overdo it.

Mmmm... guess I'll take leathery skin and skin cancer for 300. I like sitting out in the sun, never used sunblock or anything either. I've only burned like twice in my life and each time it was me being in the sun from sun up to sun down for at least 3 days straight. I remember it didn't hurt, I just kinda peeled.

I have no idea how old you are - but for me at least, as I have gotten older (*cry*) - my sensitivity to the sun and sunburns has increased. It sucks. It's major sunscreen and hats for me these days. And it makes me want to cry, because I loved lounging in the sun. (though I still do, just with much more sunblock and in moderation)

I just started to go to the tanning bed again. I go around this time every year about 5 to 6 sessions of 10 to 15 mins. And wahla nice tan. So when the warm weather finally gets here Im not going to worry about putting shorts on white spagetti legs

Why not use Jan Tanas products like all the fitness girls do!
Monica Brant for example, has used her products for years!

Most asians are pale. Specifically ones that have money. With most its believed that tans are for people who work in fields, which is why you'll find some wealthy asians are pretty milky white. I'm a dirty Filipino so I guess its in the blood.

Lancome has a great self tanner, you can get it in a bronzer which means it has color so while you apply it you can see where it is going. I have used this one myself. I am very very white and with this brand I get a nice color, not orange.
In my salon I have Avachi self tanner, several women have requested it after using it last year. They have told me it is the best they have used.
Which ever you use make sure you rub your hands in every direction that way you will avoid streaking. Also a trick I use to keep my palms from turning orange is I put just a small amount of lotion on my hands and rub it in real well first then apply the tanner.
The spray tans are nice also, just check with the salon first on what you need to do. All spray tans are not the same so this is important to find out what you need to do first. Also word of mouth about the spray tan from friends is very important.
Good luck!
