anyone have any sugestions, from experience preferably, I really don't wanna buy something, then exchange it multiple times in search of something that works.

I'm interested in something small, making decent pictures and fairly simple to operate. Don't wanna spend insane amount of money, maybe around 200 bucks max

I can't make any specific recommendations for that price range, but I've always been a fan of Canon and Nikon.

This site should be useful for you also, if you want to do some research on them.

I'm puzzled by the Dell comment heh, I know Dell peddles all kinds of equipment, would I get a good deal from them though as opposed to going to some specialized store/site?

Ive never checked out dell for cameras, but if its anything like thier pc's, they are cheap, but can get much better for just a little more

Gateway's digital cameras are supposedly pretty good, I recall seeing a commercial from them on TV... but I'd be wary of anything that says Gateway on it. =)

Get a Canon Elph! IT's the one I used at FF last year so you can see samples of the picture quality under my name in the FF gallery.

The s200 (2 megapixel that I used at FF) is probably around 200.00 street price now while the 3.2 Megapixel I'm guessing is mid 200's.

Cannon and Nikons are some of the best, but thats normally the more upper end ones at higher prices +$700. For $200 price range Id add in olympus aswell....Im more into quality picts for the price and at that price range and last I looked into digital cameras they are also some of the best.


I get most of my camera equiptment from B&H Photo....They have a great inventory from bottom to top end and Ive never been ripped by em...They are cheaper than many stores, but a tad more expensive then most the other back of magazine companies. You can look up there stuff on the internet or in the back of photography magazines.

Looked up a couple good ones for ya real quick upto $200, just suggestion dont get any under 3 megapixel if ya can help it:

Olympus Price: $ 199.95
D-540 Zoom, 3.2 Megapixel, 3x Optical/3.3x Digital Zoom, Point-and-shoot, Digital Camera

Canon Price: $ 199.00
PowerShot A300, 3.2 Megapixel, 5.1x Digital Zoom, Point-and-shoot, Digital Camera.

One of these two Id suggest.


There are a couple cheaper that are over 3.0megapixels down too $130, but they are not nikon, cannon or olympus. If ya want to check it out just goto http://www.bhphotovideo.com
then goto digital photography and either choose 3 megapixels and up or upto 2.9 megapixels. It normally takes a few days too a couple weeks to get the items.

If you get one under 3megapixels...the elph 2megapixel like Winnow said is good.

I still use the only digital camera I've ever owned. It's a Sony Mavica that I bought in 1997. It's never given me any problems...just super pictures. I use it to snap photos and upload them to the net. I've used this camera at least 5 days per week since I bought it and it's never failed to perform flawlessly.

I should add that it uses a floppy and they're sort of obsolete these days.

What is this "floppy" you speak of?

I've had a Kodak Easyshare dx4330 (i think) 3 megapixel cam for over a year now and I've been pretty happy with it. Great quality images, and you can buy the optional dock that transfers images and recharges the camera

Basically, I recommend using http://reviews.cnet.com/ for good technology reviews of many different types of electronics products.

You can also use http://www.dpreview.com as Kguku recommended.

Just remember a few things unless you're a professional photographer.

-the smaller it is, the more likely you'll take it with you and the more likely you'll use it.

-the easier it is to use, the less fidgeting around you'll do before picts causing people to wait and walk around you while you setup the shot!

-easy to transfer the images to your computer so you'll use picts.

-be sure to buy a larger flash card (or whatever memory card your new camera uses. The included one is usually too small 8 or 16mb. I bought a 256mb flash card and that hold about 256 pictures before you need to unload them (can snap pics like mad and delete the ones that suck!)

I love my Canon Powershot S30, sadly it's out of production now. You may be able to find a refurb on ebay or some closeout website at the price range you are interested in.

edit: Digital zoom is ass. Only consider using it if you intentionally want crappy pictures.

Here, here.... I love my digital Elph. I had a larger camera before, and never took it anywhere because it was so bulky and I felt like a tourist. I take my Elph all over...

Me too, I'll third the Elph. The only thing I'd change about it would be more optical zoom, but that'd probably make it bigger. I highly recommend that camera to anyone looking for one. 3.2 megapixels is seriously more than enough.

Question for you Elph lovers out there.

Our receptionist at my work purchased a S400 (uber_01) and was having trouble hooking it up.

I proceeded to install the drivers from the website but the camera was never detected by windows as a removable drive. Instead it was found as a Scanner (WTF with twain driver and all) and she had to import the pics to TIF then resave then single as jpeps. I was using "Imaging" in Windows.

Is there some special uber software that comes with the canon to make copying pics more friendly?

If not they Canon's sux ass.


My Fugifilm camera does the trick.

Just buy any of those cheap 10-20.00 multi-card readers for USB ports and take the flash card out of the camera and use the multi card reader to transfer your images.

I don't recall having any trouble with the usb cable that connects directly to the camera but the multicard readers are much easier to setup and use. You can pop out the card and put a new one in your camera and not have it tied up downloading images.
