Voice recording to CD to CD player - possible?

Curious to know if I can wing this without having to spend any cash. Looking to do a voice recording through my PC (have a microphone allready) then dump it on a CD; from there I want to be able to use said CD to play through a CD player for a school project.
Do I need any special programs to handle this or is it possible to just use the windows recordery thingy and save in a CD-playable format?
