80's Metal?

I don't know anything about it (being born in 81' I was not aware for most of it) and I promised my best friend's fiance I'd make him a mixed cd of his kind of music in an attempt to include the new kid.
He said he likes thrashmetal speed metal hair metal and 80's punk. May God forgive him....
So what's good?

Hrrrm...1980 I was into...
Germs - Richie Dagger's Crime
Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
Clash - London Calling
Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop or Pinhead
Husker Du - Everything Falls Apart
will prolly suit him...most of the true punk stuff was taking a turn toward alternative after 80...
errrm as far as the metal...dunno wasn't into that...
I thought this was in audio a sec ago...*puts down the crack pipe*

Skid Row was the best 80's metal band, imo.

I spent the 90's trying to forget about it. I succeeded in forgetting everything except the memory of how big my hair was when it "looked good" back then. Me and my AquaNet probably are responsible for a third of the hole in the ozone.

Motorhead.
"80s Punk" is an oxymoron
If you're going to put any Anthrax in the mix make sure it's "Got the time"

Arbor had some good suggestions for punk, here are a few more.
Descendents - My Age (or almost anything off Milo Goes to College)
999 - Homicide
The Business - Harry May, Blacklist
Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict
Fear - I Don't Care About You
Chelsae - I'm on Fire
Not really punk or metal, but somewhat close and worth a mention
Smithereens - White Castle Blues
All I can think of off the top of my head (and here at work away from my CDs).

I recently finished my "Cock Rock vol. 1" CD, here is what I put on it. In some cases I didn't go for the most popular song by the artist listed, your mileage may vary.
Bon Jovi - "Living On a Prayer"
Def Leppard - "Pour Some Sugar on Me"
Whitesnake - "Still of the Night"
Twisted Sister - "I Wanna Rock"
Quiet Riot - "Cum on Feel the Noise"
Motley Crüe - "Wild Side"
Winger - "Seventeen"
Skid Row - "Youth Gone Wild"
Warrant - "Cherry Pie"
Ratt - "Round and Round"
Scorpions - "Rock You Like a Hurricane"
Motley Crüe - "Kickstart My Heart"
Bon Jovi - "Bad Medicine"
*Foreigner - "Juke Box Hero"
*Billy Squier - "The Stroke"
*GnR - "Mr. Brownstone"
Europe - "The Final Countdown"
* - These were filler, I don't classify those three as as big of 80s douchebag hair bands as the rest of them.

Oops, forgot that I had a Poison song on that CD too, "Talk Dirty to Me".

OMG - why is "You shook me all night long" not listed yet?!
I'd add Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl" for punk type. Love that song!

Because the ac/dc formula has been old for a decade

by Sylvus
I don't include AC/DC for the same reasons that I don't include Guns N Roses or several other bands that were contemporaries of the afforementioned bands; some of them transcended the rest of the garbage that ran rampant until grunge killed it.
I suppose Bon Jovi might be able to be excluded as well, but I never really liked any of their music from the 90s.

Nobody mentioned Queensryche! Operation Mindcrime was (and still is) one of the best concept albums ever. Right up there with Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!
I only mention this because nearly twenty years later they just released Operation: Mindcrime II. Originally when I heard they were coming out with a sequel I thought it was going to suck terribly. However after listening to it I think they did an OK job with it. Not up there with the first one.. But nothing they release ever will be.

Most of my 80's time was filled with skater angst. The music listened to at the time consisted of:
The Exploited
The Misfits
The Cramps
The Cult
Dead Kennedys
Desendents (who later became)
All
S.O.D. (Storm Troopers of Death) one album but it kicks mega ass
Sigue Sigue Sputnik (for a softer sexy punk)
Anthrax
Metallica
Megadeath
Slayer
Public Enemy (yeah I know, but something about them kicked ass)
Motorhead
Sex Pistols
The Cure
The Police
The Smiths
Echo and the Bunnymen
This list could go on and on as I rack my brain and try to remember the 80's.

To quote Joe Walsh: "The 80's were a waste of time." Absolute commercial tripe for the most part.
Couldn't stand hair bands or the pussies that emulated them, sliced up pants, big hair, etc... Madonna & her clones too for that matter

There's so much 80's h8 in this thread, which is incorrect.

Scrap everything people have posted here so far. Everyone is posting their favorites without sticking to what you were asked to look for.
Before you make yourself look like a fool, just get more specifics from the guy. He gave you some genres, but 80's genres were not that well defined beyond the listener. What one source would call thrashmetal, another may call a hair band. Lines were crossed/blurred/erased during the 80s until we ended up with the tripe that is modern pop.

Queensryche
I love Operation Mindcrime, I will have to give the sequel a listen.
I was surprised not to see Dio on this list, Rainbow in the Dark, Last In Line.
Iron Maiden - Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner is another song I still occasionally put on.
Motley Crue was big back then, but I think they were mentioned.
Lita Ford was HOTTTTT (looks, not so much the music).
I think everyone I knew had Judas Priest albums like British Steel and Screaming for Vengence.
Scorpions of course, they mastered the rock ballads.
And I am not sure I would classify them as Metal, but The Cult and Rush are usually listed as metal bands in most lists of 80's music and the both were great.

Couple good punk type groups from the 80's was X and Siousxie and the banshees. X had a lot of good songs like Los Angeles, Blue spark and Hungry Wolf.

wait, so you're saying you actually have an affinity for 80's music that isn't based on nostalgia?

Oh stop being such a fucking elitist, there's been plenty of stuff listed that falls into the categories he requested (regardless of when punk "died").

Punk is not dead! I am going to have to go tell one of my friends that his band can't play anymore because Punk is dead!
World Burns to Death will be no more!

Some good old school metal bands...
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Megadeath
Ozzy
Black Sabbath
Ronny James Dio (although only 2 good songs per album)
Pantera
Anthrax
Danzig
hair bands would be
Motley Crue
Poison
Def Lepard
Ratt
Twisted Sister
Cinderella
Whitesnake
GnR
and one not mentioned that doesn't really fit into either.....Queen
