Today at my x-country ski race I overheard a teammate talking about coffee and how it's actually good for you. Does anyone know anything about this? Is coffee actually a performance enhancer? If so, maybe I'll take up drinking coffee before meets/races and whatnot. What kind of coffee do you like?

He's not questioning the caffeine content. He is wondering about the possiblity of coffee enhancing your endurance, speed, etc. from a semi-nutritional point of view, not just a quick caffeine buzz
...please read and try to be semi-useful next time...

I have no studies to quote you but I use to run cross country events of 3 miles or more, both our trainer and our doctor told all of us on a regular basis that one to two cups of coffee 45 min to 1 hour before a event enhances your short term performance. I found this to be true for the most part. In a 3 to 5 mile run it seemed to give me a little extra bounce in my step but once I passed the 5 mile mark going to 10 miles the only thing I noticed was the extream desire to be in my lazboy at home and some cramping.

Both coffee and sodas do this if taken 45 min to an hour before. They give a small boost in short endurance runs like mentioned by sarlen.

When I use to work out all the time I didn't drink Coffee or ANY caffeine after I worked out so that I would sleep when I got tired, heh also didn't eat afterwards either but that is another story...
Anyway, Coffee is a diauretic, makes you loose excess water. In general that isn't good or bad but depends on the sport. It was great to give me a boost and help me not retain the gallons of water I drank daily. However for more endurance oriented sports it might not be the best as you are going to loose a shitload of water anyway.
Me I love coffee though, black Foldgers 99% of the time but will splurge and get one of those Metrotype drinks if I'm near a Starbucks etc...
