Valentines Day is Coming Up

Anyone planning anything special, or want to share any ideas?

I pretty much have my V-day Master-Plan (tm) ready to go for my girlfriend, but I figured I'd see what you guys are planning.

I'm going with:

1. Flowers delivered to office - Probably pink roses, or tulips to be different.
2. Elegant Dinner - Still deciding on a restaurant at the moment. There's a lot to choose from here in So. Cal.
3. Dancing or maybe the new Adam Sandler movie that's coming out that she wants to see.

We're also going to check out Chris Rock performance on the 15th at the Universal Ampitheater, and I'm debating some jewelry as well.

Some suggestions... In the past I've done things like...

Using candles to light the way to gifts, especially if you put cards with each candle it can be fun.

For a girl I'd been with for several years, I used 6 CDs to make a box of sorts, and I had her 'real' gift in the center of the box.

Candlelight is always a big hit be it dinner or otherwise.

If any women want to offer suggestions, or things that have been done for them on Valentines day in the past that was a big hit, please feel free.

I got my girlfriend a gold bracelet for christmas. So for valentines I am going to take her bracelet without her knowing (prolly when she's sleeping), and put a gold heart charm on it. I'm all about the small, sweet things for gifts.

Think my best one ever was a treasure hunt...

I didn't have tons of cash at the time I was in graduate school...so I bought her a bunch of little presents...at the front door outside was a pretty crystal perfume bottle with a note tied to it that said "Drink Me" (I had a little Kool-Aid in there) then there was a ribbon tied to the bottle leading in the door...Inside the door was a neat silver antique hand mirror...then there was a small antique ladies pocket watch...a stuffed mouse, a toy porcelain tea service, a white ragdoll rabbit...basically she just kept following ribbons to a bunch of fairly inexpensive Alice in Wonderland presents (I am a tremendous Lewis Carroll fan as was she)...At the end of the maze was me in a Top Hat...

This year, I'm going to treat the special lady in my life with a heartfelt valentine's day surprise. Yes, I'm talking about that distinctive straight-from-the-heart offering which can only be manifested via the magical act known as the donkey punch.

Valentine's Day is a stupid "Hallmark" holiday.

I don't believe in it.

But if Tulips wound up on my counter, I'd think that was ok. Course that's ok every day - not just on V-Day.

That's pretty much how I feel about it, too. When I've gone out to dinner on Valentine's Day, it's made me feel a bit silly. I've gotten flowers before too, and while it was nice and I certainly didn't complain, it wasn't something I asked for or expected. If someone did something elaborate for me, I'd probably just be embarassed (but hey, if your girlfriend likes that kind of thing, more power to you!).

That said, this year, due to some totally coincidental timing, I'm getting the best Valentine's present ever: three weeks with the man I love. Rawr!

I got good seats to see Wicked. We usually save our dinner plans for any day around Valentine's day because price fixed menus aren't, normally, up to the restaurant's own standards.

As far as the whole "Hallmark Holiday" thing goes, you have to be damn well sure you know if she feels that way or not. Her saying it's not a big deal is not synonymous to her actually feeling that way.

I have known plenty of people, women more than men, that say they hate Valentine's, but get plenty upset if the day is ignored completely. I hate the holiday with a passion wether I am with someone that year or not, I think it is stupid as hell. But, in spite of most if not all of my girlfriends saying they think it is a stupid commercial holiday, I dare not ignore the day for fear of their wrath.

I know I hate the day, I know LOTS of people say they hate the day, but most who say that don't mean it. To be honest, everyone knows it is a made up commercial holiday, so for a person to claim to love it almost implies they just love to get stuff. Whereas I think your love for the people you care about (all, not just your signifigant other) should be a pretty regular thing.

But, then again...I just ramble a lot.

I made my girlfriend (at the time) a heart shape pizza (I worked at a pizza place) and wrote a note on the box top and had a driver deliver that and a rose to her on year. I think I pretty much outdid myself and won't ever be able to really top that!

What I'm going to do probably is get 11 roses and put a fake one in to complete the dozen. Then put a note saying, "my love for you will last as long as these roses"

or something like that.

putting a white rose in with a dozen red ones tells her that she's special to you... I haven't decided which I am gonna do yet though

OMG, that's awesome! I love those kind of gifts, the kind that take more thought than $$. I can't stand jewelry, flowers die too quickly to be worth the money you pay a florist, going out to dinner on Valentine's Day and dealing with waiting lists suck, I love chocolate but it makes me fat, so pretty much all the traditional gifts don't impress me.

Creativity > bling

Honestly though, I don't really care for holiday gifts much. It's like people need to be *told* when to be romantic. I would prefer one surprise romantic/special day/evening a year than getting gifts on all the traditional gift giving holidays combined.

i would much rather get flowers other than roses. to me, roses scream, "you aren't worth the originality."

also, i'm not much of a jewelry person. the last guy to buy me jewelry still complains that i never wore anything he bought me. so make sure she does like it. and note what metal she prefers.

poetry is nice, if you're the poetry type. if you're not the kind of guy who goes around quoting donne 365 days a year, it comes off as a little contrived.

i kind of like cheesy stuff on valentines day. but cheesy != cliched (chocolates, roses, etc). i am addicted to those sweettart hearts though.

Valentines Day is only for those that lack the ability to make every day special for their partners. I hate manufactured holidays. It shouldn't take a reminder to do special things for people you care for.

Kudos to those making the best of the situation with creative ideas : )

The year I got orchids sticks out in my mind.
Roses arent bad though, still smell great.
Thing I appreciated most from an ex was when the usually distant, no talent, un-sentimental guy made me a card out of heart shaped doilies, pink and red construction paper, little foil hearts and glitter. Just like in grade school, it was so cute.
I still have it. Though it sheds glitter on everything ><

Maybe you should start small and let her know you are not a pregnant teenage girl. The fake flower thing is so you though.

I am fairly lucky in that my wife thinks about as highly of Valentine's day and Sweetest day as I do. Her parents also think it is a crock made up to boost someone's pockets.....so I guess that rubbed off. We have decided that we are not going for the standard crap....just going to buy each other a movie that we think the other would like. Then probably set up the video camera and make one of our own.

Why, I'm glad you asked!

I forget where this was lifted from, but I thought it was hilarious (in a sick kind of way). When you're doing a girl from behind and you're about ready to pop, you pull out and stick it up her ass and shout "Who's the boss?!" and then shout "TONY DANZA" and hit her on the back of the head. Akin to the Donkey Punch, but with panache!

I consider myself a very lucky gal, as my fiance doesn't just stick to Valentine's day to do something special. He would send me huge rose arrangements in gorgeous vases about once a month. He knows what color of roses are my favorites.

And since we are apart while we finish up this whole visa process (I've been approved finally!), he sends me "care packages" filled with stuff I like. :) He's an awesome guy, and I'm very lucky.

In the version I heard, you were supposed to shout "Who's the Boss" until she says something about how "you are!" and then comes the hit on the back of the head accompanied by "No, TONY DANZA!".

Must just be a regional difference.

Aranuil buy her some Stargazer Lilies. They are big, beautiful, last a very long time and make the room smell awsome. And some Godiva chocolates too. And you can't go wrong with a heart shaped lockett with yours and her picture in it. So romantic.
