Spider Bite Research

OK, my friend gets bit by something last night and he thinks it might be a spider. So I decide to do some research on spider bites for him in order to possibly shed some light on the situation. This article concerning the bite of the "hobo" spider looked promising. After one victim described the bite I determined the culprit is likely not this species since his wound in no way resembles a vagina. Please note this is a report by a reputable news station.

To be quite honest i'm scared shitless of spiders. Fortunate for you, there haven't been any hobos reported in Florida (or in Oklahoma i found). Big and fast here usually means wolf spiders...not sure which arachnid holds that title in Fl.

We have brown recluse spiders here. Nasty fuckers, cause necrosis after they bite you.
I saw a guy who got bit in his trailer (big suprise), and let the wound fester for like 2 weeks. They had to excise like 2 POUNDS of dead flesh from his lower leg; really nasty scar, but the doctors said he was lucky to keep his limb.
Only good thing about the recluse is that it lives up to it's name. They hide out in dark, secluded spots like storage sheds, lumber piles, filthy double-wides, ect.

There are plenty of Tarantulas as well here in Texas. At least up in the hills where I stomp.
edit: And brown reclusesese
I miss the little Florida lizards

yeah, but they look exactly like those hobo spiders.
i'm scared of spiders too. north florida is not a good place for people like that. black widows fucking everywhere and these fucking hobo-copycat-wolf spiders.
i went for a vacation once, and being a single male at the time, didnt make my bed or anything.
i came back and saw one of those tunnel/funnel webs going in between my pillow and the bed sheet. i pulled the 4 corners of the sheet up, folded it, got it in a hefty bag and threw the whole shit out and bought new stuff.
FUCK THAT SHIT!!

Dunno, we call them wood spiders. Brown with a 2-3 inch long body and have a nasty bite. I fish them out of the pool almost every afternoon, rarely see a live one though.
Big garden spiders and wolf spiders too, I don't mind those though.
Had tarantulas where I grew up in MO, they were fun to catch.

rofl Voro, I'm surprised you didn't pound it with a hammer after wrapping it up

I don't smoke (or use air freshener hehe) but i keep a lighter and a big aresol can of Lysol handy in case of a spider. If one was sitting on my couch I am fairly sure that I would still torch it, and the couch if it was necessary to protect me from their evil plans to kill all humans. They are so dangerous I can feel it in my soul.

i'm deathly afraid of spiders *shivers at that word* and everyone who knows me personally knows this as a fact. I'm VERY VERY arachnaphobic...
Xunil and I have a dreamcast, and we were playing Rayman on there, silly cartoon video game, about 2 years ago. There's a scene with spiders you have to fight, and when that fucking spider came on the TV, I literally threw the controller halfway across the room, cuddled on the couch and refused to play that game. and I haven't since
I even refused to play EQ when I found out there were spiders in the game, big nasty fuckers all over the game, the icky white ones in Halas, etc, etc. I'm much better with cartoon spiders now, I don't have to change my view to the sky when I fight them in EQ anymore
But a RL spider around me, and i will throw up if it touches me, or faint, or my body will literally lock up and I can't move until the thing is dead and buried.

When I was 8 I got bit by a brown recluse. I went to the hospital and everything. It certainly hurt.
But, as you can see, I turned out okay... I guess

I had 2 pet taratulas before..both Chilean rosas. Beautiful creatures to watch and handle. Elegant, but so alien at the same time. The most fascinating thing to me was when they molted. So odd to watch them web themselves to the ground for days at a time them break out of their old skin.
I miss Godiva and Eve:( Had to get rid of them for a move years and years ago. I never understood people's irrational fears of arachnids. 95% of them live solitary lives and actually hunt other insects, leaving your home clean of more filthy vermin types *shrugs*
Now you wanna talk irrational fears??? Don't get NO cockroaches near me!!!!! Flithy, disgusting lil bugs:( Of course seeing Creepshow at a young and impressionable age likely didn't help that any...

i acknowledge my fear of spiders is irrational.
but a contributor to the prevalance of arachnaphobia is that aversion to the spider's body plan is hard wired (to a degree) in our brains. It probably takes very little negative reinforcement, whether it is actual spider bites, or just hearing others talk about being scared of them in your childhood to make it into full blown fear and loathing. same can be said for snakes.
i'm somebody who is not scared of snakes for instance, and i used to catch them all the time as a kid.

I freak out around spiders and bees

Bees are understandable as I have been stung(bitten in the case of wasps) too many times growing up. Spiders I just can't stand. Especially when I see a black widow or something. I remember camping near Area 51 in Nevada a few years back(don't ask) and I felt a tickling on my neck....turned out to be a nasty looking desert tarantula - scared the piss outta me! Yikes!!!!
Snakes on the other hand, no problemo, always liked the fuckers. Gimme lizards and snakes anyday, just no goddamn bugs!!

Technically, they're South American lizards, but I like 'em too. They are cute little fuckers and the fact that they chirp at night is very cool. They have voracious appetites for roaches, ants, and spiders, so they are most welcome here.

Just take a walk outside on pretty much any night here in Tampa, and you'll see quite a few. My folks still live in Key West, and they say that they have become so successful that they are beginning to out-compete the naitive NA gekos.

Heh, anywhere in central-south FL you can get all you want
Geckos don't bother me, they're faster than my cats (mostly) and stay up on the walls out of reach. Eat lots of bugs too.
Anoles (the other white meat for my cats) aren't real bright, and I end up with half eaten lizard corpses all over the house. They drag them in from the back porch and leave us slightly gnawed on presents all over.
I'm just glad we don't have palmetto bugs here, those 3 inch flying roaches just gross me out.

I love spiders. Spiders, along with sharks, are a product of millions of years of evolution perfecting them into the ultimate hunters and killers (pay no attention to the fact that you can just stomp them). They really are a fascinating species. Compared to humans, or almost any animal, were physiologically inferior in almost every way.
I like the camel spider

heh pussies
i have scorpions in my room - i killed one just 2 days ago, also many of these recluse spiders are in my area (i live in a new development close to the desert) I get bit in my sleep a lot.
SOME OF THEM LIKE TO JUMP!~

Yeah, Tampa has got more lizards than people I think. My cats love to play with them and as long as they do a better job than the pest control guy...I let the quick lil guys live wherever they want to:)
Now if they just had lizards big enough to kill the bird-sized roaches in FL... funny no one mentioned THAT before I moved here...

I'll admit, I was pretty severely scared of spiders and snakes as a wee lad. But they don't bother me anymore, I guess I've just been around them enough. That said, if I KNEW there was one in my bed, I wouldn't try and find it. heh
I agree though, I enjoy watching spiders hunt. I like watching the Praying Mantis more though.

This is my buddy's "spider hate page". He is terrified of them. I have seen him scream like a little girl when we have been fishing and he saw one on a tree limb, close to his face.
I fucking hate all insects. Like someone else said, give me snakes, lizards, whatever.....just no bugs. Bleh!

i lived in New Orleans for a little bit and the roaches there have attack mode. they hit the air (sounding like a b-29) and come straight at you.
one night i came in from boozing and went to the kitchen.
hit the lights, and a big fucking roach was sitting on the edge of the sink.
this guy was holding a crouton from a salad plate, and chomping on it like corn on the cob.
when the light went on, he paused, looked up at me, then went back to eating.
i turned off the light and went to bed.

You mean getting bitten by a spider doesn't turn you into a wall crawling, web shooting superhero?? AhhhhCRAP!!!
Guess I better go see a doctor now....

I went to Army Basic Training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. One of the first things they told us was to watch out for the big brown recluses. The little bastards would hide out in the outhouses and stalk you if you came inside. Needless to say I learned to screw my bunghole up real tight!
There was another good time in college where we had an especially hot and sticky summer. A few spiders (little ones mostly) decided to make a home in our window. A lighter and a can of hairspray work damn good on the little bastards.
Nowadays I usually just leave them alone. I hate the mosquitos even more and if they take care of that problem then they are all right with me.

I had a Tarantula and 2 Black Emperor scorpions a few years ago, so the spiders don't really bother me anymore... what I absolutely FUGGING HATE are those centipede looking bastards I think they are silverfish... they are between 1 and 2 inches long have a bunch of legs on each side with two antenna looking things out the front and back of them, they are very fast on any surface.... I have the willies as I write this......

Shooting silk webbing out of your ass is overrated anyway.

camel spiders will eat your face!
i like banana spiders because they can cause priapism in males, and they are highly aggresive and will bite multiple times!
