Anyone know of any good ski resorts that are approximately halfway (give or take) between Montreal and New York City? Might be meeting someone halfway, so it kind of needs to be centrally located.

Killington is the "best" slopes, located in central vermont, closer to Montreal though. It's a tad bit pricey, but the skiing is quite good, and it has heated gondolas to take you to the top.

Might be one or two in western Mass, not sure which one would suit your needs better, you probably should look it up.

The only place to ski in New England is Vermont. Don't waste your time in Western Mass. Here are the best areas in Vermont:

Killington - where I learned to really ski. Biggest and consistently best resort in New England. http://www.killington.com/
Okemo - great smaller resort, less commercial than Killington and favored by locals. http://www.okemo.com/
Mount Snow - OK big resort, tries (and fails) to be Killington. Locals like this place too. http://www.mountsnow.com/
Stratton - southernmost "big mountain" resort in Vermont. Usually favored by arrogant New Yorkers who step on your ski tops in the lift lines. Apparently rebranded as an Austrian enclave in the style of Hannes Schneider, first ski instructor in the US. http://www.stratton.com/

Special mention / uber niche ski area for sickos:
Mad River Glen - the wildest place I've ever skied, all glades and all natural snow. In years with warm winters or poor snowfall it's marginal, should be outstanding this year. No wonder their motto is "Ski it if you can". http://www.madriverglen.com/

Do most places offer Snowboarding lessons/equipment as well as skis these days?

I've skiid at Stowe every single time I'm in central Vermont, and it's hands down the best resort there. My dad is a ski instructor there so let me know if you go and maybe we can hook you up with some lessons.

I know Stowe has both equipment for skis and snowboarding and lessons for both as well.

Simply Put, MAD RIVER GLEN, it's like skiing out west, not for the novice but a true blast for anyone that enjoys a challenge. The ONLY real place to ski in the northeast. Ok other suggestions, Killington is always fun. Okemo and stratton are both nice, Mt Snow is a no go in my book, Suicide Six outside Woodstock Vt (not woodstock NY) is also great, errrr I think it's Suicide 7 now, I used to ski there till I moved to Cali.

I forgot about Stowe, and for that matter Smugglers Notch and Jay Peak, all of which are excellent Vermont ski resorts. However those are all a fair ways further north in Vermont than what I think Xou is looking for, very very close to Canada (to the point there are bilingual trail signs at Jay).

The four top places I listed all offer snowboard rentals, lessons and terrain parks. I think if you asked about snowboarding at Mad River Glen they'd beat you up and call you a "flatlandah"

No one ever mentions the awesome snow we have in Maine.

Sugerloaf probably has the better slopes but for some reason, Sunday River is tons more fun. Guess it is just the atmosphere there.

That's because Maine isn't in between Montreal and New York... otherwise I would have mentioned Maine spots too!

Suicide 6 is great fun, and if you are just beginning its a good day of skiing. On Tuesdays its two for one lift tickets, which is a sweet deal.

It's cold in them there hills! Skiing sucks balls, mostly because of the snow

All of those are good- Jay Peak is VERY close to Canada - seriously the border is a short drive

you can fly to Toronto for $95 from NY -why spend the money to both travel?
