Language Learning Advice

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with any of the available audio systems of learning languages. I'm looking to learn French by the summer, and I'm hoping I can pick up an Audio CD learning package of some sort and spend my commute practicing, and learning conversational French. Software packages would be fine as well.
If anyone has any recommendations, or negative opinions of any products of that ilk, I'd appreciate it.
Edit: This is the package I'm looking at

You probably aren't supposed to do this (not saying I have!) but you can also go to the library and copy theirs for free. Looks like it would save you almost $300.00. I know the one near my home carries the tapes, cd's, dvd's etc. usually for French, German, Spanish, Farsi and a few others.
Just an idea.
