I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed in 7th grade. Wasn't pleasant. I'm not sure what they used for pain meds back then, but whatever it was it made me puke, and that was the end of that. Did it without an IV - laughing gas and about 19023901 shots in the mouth. Torture.

Still waiting on them to stop bleeding so I can take the gauze out and get a nap, maybe.
Currently on Vicodin 5/500 and 400 of ibuprofen. The chipmonk cheeks are developing nicely.
Was hoping they'd put me out for it, at least, but oh no...local only. Unfortunately local anesthetic = I remember every excruciating detail.
Fuckers.

Yeah.. I can still remember the grinding sound and watching bits of tooth and jaw bone come flying out of my mouth when they had the drill. They kept trying to get me to close my eyes and sleep.. but yeah right. I obsessively watched in the reflection of their goggles.
Oh P.S. - if you have any sort of sensitivity to pain meds, be careful - puking, with stitches, and a swollen face, hurts lots and can rip your stitches.

*Snap!* *Crackle!* *Pop!*
When I had mine removed they put me under. I woke up a couple hours later and started walking out the door... I was halfway to the car before the nurse noticed and ran back to get me.
The doctor said something afterwards, but all I wanted to do was get in the car and go home.

I'm not sure if it was cooincidence or really worked, but when I had it done, someone told me to remove the gauze, and replace it with Tea bags. If you're not troubled by Tea, you may give it a try. My bleeding reduced immedaitely, and stopped altogether soon after.
may be worth a try.

Yeah wet tea bags not dry...tea causes a bit of vasoconstriction reducing blood flow in the local capillaries...

but seriously can someone tell me what's the point of pulling all your wisdom teeth?
I kept mine till they started to be too expensive to keep healthy, had fillings in all 4 at one point.
Don't remember pulling them (not all at once) to be especially painful either, certainly not requiring stitches

Had all 4 of mine taken out when I was 18. Bottom 2 were impacted and the top 2 were fine. Doc said if I only had the bottom 2 taken out (which was necessary) the top 2 wouldn't stop growing or grow the rest of the way crooked since they had nothing to match up to. /shrug
I just remember it hurting like hell for the next week even through the pain meds and ice bag that was permanently stuck to my cheeks.

If you don't pull them and you have had braces in the past, they can fuck up all the teeth in front of them and waste thousands of dollars in orthodontics.

Yeah, mine didn't come in straight and pushed my bottom front teeth out of alignment, should have had them out years ago. Had one pulled w/ just novacaine in the chair..

All 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted. Had to have them out so my orthodontics work could be completed. Yay? Fortunately, they put me totally under, but I had enough other teeth pulled that I know what it would have been like. Big teeth, small mouth (shaddup, peanut gallery).
Val/dem drip in the IV was much

i had all 4 removed at once when i was like 20. they put me under via iv drip and i woke up a half hour later in a chair with a mouthful of gauze. they'd shot my mouth full of painkiller so i could go home, have some soup and pop some pain pills. i just lounged around with ice and pills for the next couple of days, but that's it.
my favorite part of the experience was the follow up appointment a week later when they give you that plastic syringe to squirt warm water into the holes... omfg that felt orgasmic.

I was put to sleep while they removed mine the drug of choice then was tylenol3 w/codine. I hope you have the lovely icepacks and enjoy soup
Why have them removed well if they are impacted your mouth is too small for the extra teeth, therefore they wont grow in correctly. So you big mouths out there havent a problem..hehe

I got mine removed in 1999 at the age of 26. They just gave me locals. After one was pulled, the power to the building went out and the had to wait 20 minutes for it to come back up. Novocaine never really worked fully on me and with those back teeth, they really have to shoot a lot. I felt a lot of pain for those final three. I actually kept the teeth and bits of my jaw were still stuck beteween teh roots which had curled around it. I was given vicodin and ibuprofen and skipped work for a week although I felt fine after a day.

I had my lowers pulled in boot camp. Actually got a good doctor that gave me a shot of novicane on each side and then waited for it to take partial effect before giving more shots. Teeth came out fine.
I think I was more worried about the shots than the teeth pulling. I had gotten 7 shots before (one after another) including through the roof of my mouth and I think that hurt worse than any pulling done.
We had a guy get 5 teeth taken out including 2 that got cut out and he was messed up for a week. His pillow was a mess after each night for a couple of days after that.
Pulling is not so bad.. when they have to cut them out is when it is some serious pain.
There was a guy I used to work with when I was still in that hated needles so bad that he never took anesthetics for any dental work. He was a wierd one and I think he sort of liked it.

I had all four of mine pulled in early 2002... it was a miserable experience. They were all impacted and needed to be cut out and one of them was infected. I was *supposed* to be knocked out, but the dentist thought I "looked comfortable enough" to keep me awake through the whole thing. Granted, I really couldn't feel much pain when he was pulling them, but I could feel the pressure and hear the scraping, and that was enough to freak me out. However, I was so drugged all I could do was grunt.
About an hour or so after the surgery, I was hurting. I remember coming home and falling onto the bathroom floor as a wave of dizziness/nausea hit me. The queasiness eventually subsided, but I was in extreme pain for about a week/week and a half. I was taking two 750mg of hydrocodone every 3 hours, and was also on anti-nausea pills/antibiotics (for the infection). My dentist gave me a syringe that I was supposed to clean the holes out with every time I ate something, and I did, but I still ended up with two dry sockets. Those are fun, too.
Personally, I hated the way the painkillers made me feel. I was incredibly loopy...very, very out of touch with everything (not to mention tired, those things knocked me out). I remember I tried playing EQ right after I took some and, well... there are a few people who remember how that went. Myself, I barely remember what I said or what I did, but I do remember the colors in game seemed so.... bright.... ooohh....

I've had dentists telling me I need all 4 of mine removed for 20 years. Never had the time or the inclination to; I will bite the bullet this year and have it done when work isn't busy (yah, right

). The pressure on the right side has set up a slight ringing in the ear that is annoying as hell.
And yes my orthodontic work has been slightly messed up by the pressure of these rogue teeth.

Heh, you'd be dead w/ that amount
I only had my bottom two pulled. Initially, the orthodontist suggested I get all four pulled, top two exposed but crooked and the bottom two impacted. My mother, a dental hygientist all her life, felt I should wait. Lo and behold, the top two straightened themselves out and the bottom two, while not growing in straight, eventually exposed themselves. Waiting for the shots to take effect took longer than the procedure. Pretty sure my recovery only included advil and ice cream.

You all make me laugh with your tales of relatively painless wisdom teeth removal. While getting them pulled and the subsequent pain is no picnic, the abscess I ended up getting 2-3 weeks later was by far the most terrible pain I have ever felt. Worse than when my appendix burst.
My cheek swelled (i'm more partial to "swoll", who can i petition about that) up to about 2x the size it got when I first had my wisdom teeth removed. I had to go back into the oral surgeon and have him slice my healing gums back open and stuff some sort of a rubber "drain" in there. When he did that, they gave me a couple shots of novocaine that didn't even come close to dulling the pain. As the doctor was poking and prodding and slicing and stuffing, and my knuckles were white and tears were streaming down my cheeks, the nurse had this horrified look on her face and she mouthed the words "I'm so sorry" to me.
Just thinking back on the harrowing ordeal is somewhat terrifying.

It was probably 7.5/750 (7.5 mg hydrocodone, 750mg acetaminophen).
I have the weak 5/500 stuff, but it's doing its job.

Evolution relies on selective breeding, which is why our jaws are getting smaller (cause it's cuter), but who chooses a mate based on their wisdom teeth...?
Oh yeah, and our jaws evolving as smaller is what makes wisdom teeth a problem in the first place..

How bad the whole experience is - is partly dependent on how impacted they are or are not and how much they have to dig, cut etc ugh
having my wisdom teeth out ranks as one of my all time most horrible personal experiences - I had general and WOKE UP part way through and as they tried to put me back under the horrible burning in my hand and arm from the IV meds made me become hysterical and really you don't want any more info
I later had other oral surgery under a local and recovered in like a day and a half so go figure
my sister waited too long to have them out - partly ruined some very expensive ortho work :/
OH yah and PS you don't want those little blood clot plugs to come out - so don't suck!

Having my wisdom teeth out were probably the easiest dental experience I've ever had. 5 minutes tops from chair to out the door. I was supposed to be gassed to relax me, but the dentist said he was out (wtf?) so it was just a couple needles followed by a little asian guy basically getting on top of me with a pair of pliers and a sucking sound accompanied by some pressure (not pain) in my jaw.
Later that day when the freezing was wearing off I had a heck of a headache, but by the next day I was ok. Didn't like the feeling of having 4 holes in my mouth tho.

Had no roots for any wisdom teeth, seriously. Only downside is that I had no root for a regular molar on the left side so I'm short a tooth. No big deal tho, unless a Dorito happpens to get stabbed down into the gums. OW!
