What is the difference between an E1 and an E3? Anyone here gone through Special Forces training?

E stands for Enlisted. E1 is a level 1 enlisted person, I believe the title is Private. E2 is Private First Class (PFC). E3 is Specialist or Corporal or something, I think. I'm pretty sure Sergeant starts at E5.

In the Army, E1 & E2 are both privates. E1 is the rank that most enlistees begin with, and has no stripe. E2 has 1 single stripe. E3 is a Private First class and has 1 stripe, one rocker. E4's are either Corporals or Specialists depending on whether they've completed the first level of NCO training (PLDC, primarly leadership development course) and at the discresion of their unit commander. Other than pay, there's no major difference between E1 and E3 - they're all treated roughly the same. Specialists generally get a bit more consideration, but not much.
Yes, sergeant is e5 followed by staff sgt, sgt first class, master / first sgt, and sergeant major (including command sgt. major and sgt. major of the army).
