Interesting...Wonder how they establish connectedness...
Seems like they may have used CD Purchase data then set a threshold for what = connectedness?...
Be interesting to see this tool used for some other things...Studies of imminence in science/philosophy...historiography...hrmmmm theres a dissertation for someone...

i am fascinated by this. some of the associations look odd to me though, maybe they used amazon's recommendation engine? seems like it could be based on label (at least for the bands i was looking at) and collaborations, but that could just be coincidence.

Nah not based on labels, collaborations or common members...
I'm certain its based either on Amazon's "Users who purchased this also purchased"...or DL data from the old wild days...I'd bet on the Amazon stuff since they have everything linked there...
This thing is the perfect target marketing tool for Amazon...People enter a band they like see bands they might like and can listen to clips real time...
Also has potential for Book Sales, Art Sales etc etc...The folks who developed this should make a fortune off it...

I can spend all day messing around with musicplasma. Doesn't mean I'm buying anything from Amazon though. But it's nice to have that option I suppose. I've been able to hear a lot of artists I probably wouldn't have even heard of before.
It's a bit quirky at times though. I picked 'Over The Rhine' and it got the first song correct. Then it started playing other random artists. No idea what was up with that.
(Over The Rhine is great BTW. Buy their stuff today! 'Ohio' is a good double-CD for normal CD price. Although I found their little announcement in the liner notes, probably put in by the record company, not to download music, funny. MP3s are how I discovered them in the first place.)
