This is an old case/story, but I stumbled accross this site today and figured some of you would actually like to see this. This site has pictures showing the recovery of the USS Cole after it had its hull compromised.

I did not know how these things worked until seeing these photos, pretty damn cool.

I've seen that ship/recovery device before on either the History ch or Discovery , mighty impressive. Now think how much explosives are needed to blast a hole that size into a warship like that. The hull should be aprox 4 in thick at that point.

Actually, the hull is not that thick at all. The skin if the ship is probably around a 1/2 of an inch or less. Framing was also obviously twisted as well and that was probably another 1/2 of an inch where it was at.

The same type of recovery vessel was used to bring the Stark home as well after she was mined in the Gulf. I have seen video on the damage control efforts to save that ship as well and her hull is only 3/16th of an inch think. The crew wound up welding extra plates on the superstructure around structural cracks to help prevent the ship from breaking into two pieces.
