Kwon, can you explain what 'shoot fighting' is exactly?
Thanks!

It has nothing to do with Guns if you think that!
The "Shooting" in shootfighting or Shooto as its called in Japan, is when you "shoot" for the opponents legs for a takedown!
You can ofcourse win by TKO but mostly you win by Submission!
You cannot work the small joints like fingers, toes etc..
Ankles, Knees, Elbows are allowed though! As well as choking out your opponent! Opponent can tap whenever, saying that he wants to give up.
In Shootfighting you combine the Art of Striking (using Muay Thai training mostly) and the Art of Grappling (Submission Wrestling and/or Jiu Jitsu).
The Brazilians have developed a different sort of Jiu Jitsu than the Japanese, which they call Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and the Gracie Family with Helo Gracie developed their own Jiu Jitsu called Gracie Jiu Jitsu (GJJ).
A Well known Brazilian ShootFighting team is Chute Boxe with fighters such as Wanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva and Pele Landis Jons(He left Chute Boxe tho).
ShootFighting is a Sport that is a good example of Cross-Training (Training Muay for Striking and JJ for Grappling).
During the Age when Traditional Martial Arts was the most popular (60-70's) a fellow who was a trend-setter in Cross-Training was the late Bruce Lee!
He used his old Wing Tsun (which he started training first), and combined it with Boxing, Wrestling etc and in the end created his own style, Jeet Kune Do.
How did i get to Bruce? Oh yes! Cross-Training.
Nowadays MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is very popular, especially for those who wishes to compete in full contact!
The K-1 contests are purely striking and resembles Thai Boxing contests OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS, with some modified rules (Short Clinch, only one knee in the clinch, no ELbows etc) which is the number one competition for pure strikers.
In K-1 you are not allowed to grapple or fight on the ground etc...
The ultimate MMA contest In my Opinion is Pride, with UFC (Ultimate Fighting ChampionShip) second. Then we have Shooto(lighter weights), Pancrase etc...
Why prefer MMA before pure striking? Well, in my opinion, it is the closest you can get to a real fight in a sport. Pride have very good rules and is the ultimate for those who can fight both standing and on the ground.
If you are interested, i can send you to an FTp where you can see for yourself!

MMA in action!
Another good thing with ShootFighting and MMA in general is that it is also well implemented as self-defence on the Streets!
You have tools both for standup combat as well as groundfighting!

Aranuil, if you have an FTP i can upload the best of the best in ShootFighting, UFC and Pride!
Highlights and such!
If not, here is a link for now!
Chute Boxe's best fighter imo, Wanderlei Silva VS some Japanese fellow.
Wand almost never wins by Submission, it's TKO or KO mostly.
He is a blue belt in BJJ though.

I don't have a decent sized one sir. I've watched shootfighting before but was unclear on the specifics. Thanks for the info!
When I was a bit younger, I took a good deal of Kung-Fu (Sa Chan Ma), and some Aiki-Jitsu. It was a nice combination, as I had standing and grappling covered. I've watched quite a few UFCs, but cycling keeps me pretty busy anymore, so I really haven't spent any time working on fighting arts lately.

As long as you got Striking AND Grappling covered, i'll say you'll do just fine!
What's important is to have a solution for every type of problem!
Many Strikers become handicapped after they get taken down !
Check out the movie, its just 4 Mb(quick match!)

Check it this one too, its an UFC match, Frank Mir VS Wes Sims.
Frank Mir is good at submission.

Sad that people stood around and watched that. Sad that the guy in the white shirt didn't just knock him out when he caught him trying to come up from behind him.

It's been a while since I watched it very closely, but it used to be (vaguely) no biting, no gouging of eyes, and if your opponent taps out or beocmes unconcious, they lose. Ideally people were supposed to fight, not kill each other.

Who would you enjoy beating with a tire iron?
That skater or Andy Dick?

The rules have been changed during the years! It's become more of a sport nowadays! Pride have the best rules tho.
But in the FIRST UFC haha, anything was allowed.
I saw a Ninjutsu fighter get totally demolished by Patrick Stewart, a KickBoxer. Anything goes in the first UFC's.
He elbowed him constantly on the ground and blood was gushing everywhere! Fight wasnt stopped after i think 8 elbows or so!
You could elbow peeps right in the eye, drag hair, punch in the groin (!) (Hackney VS Joe Son comes to mind!

)
Nowadays, UFC tries to rival Pride when it comes to good fighting. Rules are similar, but in UFC you fight in the Octagon, a Cage while in Pride you fight in a ring.
You have rounds and a Judge who steps in when someone gets brutalized.
You can also tap to say you give up (Win by Submission).
Nowadays you have TKO's, in the earlier days of UFC you only had KO's!
Before, everyone complained how brutal it was.
Now, it's a good sport with good rules!
Much better fighters now as well.
UFC got Chuck "IceMan" Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Jens Pulver, Bj Penn, Caol Uno etc etc as their big names.
Pride got Kazushi "Gracie Hunter "Sakuraba, Wanderlei "Axe Murderer" Silva, Fedor, Herring, Frye etc
It is not unknown for fighters to change organizations every now and then though! Havent seen any Pride fighter who went to UFC(Much better pay in Pride and you get treated like a SuperStar!),but OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of UFC fighters have joined Pride events like Iceman etc.
