Not to discriminate, but I saw a new south park last night where they pretty much bashed the hell out of the foundation of the Mormon religion. The founder Joseph Smith, dum dum dum dum dum, supposedly saw a “Jewish native American” prophet and he actually believed that Jews came to the Americas thousands of years ago, and a reincarnated Jesus was born among them. The native Americans killed Jesus, and because of gods hatred he made there skin red…some pretty fucked up stuff
I was wondering if anyone knew how much of this Mormons actually believe, I met one when I was 17 on a cruise ship, and realized that they were generally a whacked out misinformed cult. They cant curse, drink, or have sex except for reproduction. Tried to look up the dude on google but couldn’t find much more then a biography.

The episode was hillarious, but since I know nothing of the mormon faith, I cant really agree or disagree with anything they said. But I think southpark has tried and gotten to be a little more intelligent over the years

Ex-Mormon here. What do you want to know? In the grand scheme of things, the Mormon religion is only as stupid, unbelievable, and just plain laughable as any other religion.

Any religion is a farce if you lay it out and use common sense like they did in that episode. They pretty much hit it on the head with thier description.

but I liked what they did with it, they said how the whole religion is based on bullshit, but they had good intentions

Go to http://www.freeholybible.com and order a bible sent to yourself. Click the box that has something to do with receiving a "message about God." They'll come talk to you about it.

If they told me anything resembling what they said on the south park last night, I would have to laugh my ass off to there face :? .

I also hear that we agnostics have a church. I wonder what the fuck goes on in an agnostic church; do you just walk in grab some Doritos and watch the game?

There was a book published a few years back called Kingdom of the Cults.. It was a pro-christian evangelistic type book that explained the holes and problems in different religions. I think I recall the largest portion of the book was dedicated to mormons. The author went through the religion with a fine toothed comb and exposed the founder, his messages, the heirarchy of the church, the comedy that is their beliefs and the secret society that runs that cult. If you wanted to see what exactly they believe in pretty easy to understand language, that book's a great resource. Good catholic section too. :D

EDIT: Unfortunately there's no "christandom" section. However, it's a great resource to laugh the Mormons and Jehova's Witnesses off of your porch with.

Mormons have also made a feature length movie about their religion that you can get for free I think. I'm sure some of you have seen it on the boob tube being advertised.

Advertising religions should be illegal on public television. That and ads about feminine hygiene, diapers of any sort, and roid cremes.

Remove those commercials and you'll lose the hilarity that was Tork's june 4th update.

Let's not get too hasty now Winnow. There is much laughter to be weaned from feminine hair removal creme commericals that play during late night monster trucky rally rebroadcasts.

My best friend for 10 years (and still a friend today) was mormon. They have like a 2nd 10 commandments and believe Heaven has different levels for different people. Lots and lots of things that I can't agree with........But.....Mormons in general are some of the nicest people and have some of the strongest family values, and those are things that do hold weight to me.

I had some mormons try to tell me (at my front door) that Jesus came to earth in WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN a space ship. No kidding?

The mormon religion has some seriously odd notions in it.

Still, I can't remember ever meeting a rude mormon. I guess results count for something.

I was raised mormon so I know a bit about the religion, it sounds like the episode had some partial truths in it. It is also my understanding that one or both of the South Park creators used to be mormon, which is why they have so much mormon bashing on their show. :)

Had mormons rent an apartments across the street from my fraternity house in 1986. They had to be on their mission of riding bikes and converting folks, etc.

Long story short, these guys were bumming rides, smoking, drinking, coming to every party we had before they left. Highlight was when the 'big mormon' guy was so drunk I bet he couldn't put his fist through the bathroom door.

I still owe the fraternity for that door.

All I know about mormons from my experience is that they are hard livin, hard drinkin, skank banging party freaks. God love em.

view the free clip for information on the mormon church you won't see on the video they give you ;)

I agree that mormons are a cult, but I also have the opinion that most organized religions are to some point. But dont compare them to scientologists, thats just crazy :P.

living in like #1 mormon town usa, outside of salt lake city, i feel safe in saying a lot of mormons are pretty ignorant about their religion.

Whenever a "religious" person feels the urge to pick apart the flaws and loopholes in the Mormon faith yet somehow overlook the same or worse in their own, I find it hypocritical to the point of hilarity.

The church for agnostics and atheists is Unitarian. I atend it occasionally and it is more a gathering of intelligent people discussing world problems and other ideas. Their is usually a topic every week like homosexuality or some other social issues. The church is open to those of other religions and we actually have a couple jews and christians who attend. Children are taught bible stories but they are not taught in the sense that they are true in any way. We pick them apart for the basic moral story in them. I for instance taught the story about the guy who was going to kill his son because God told him too. I taught the kids that no adult has the right to force you to do something like be sacrificed. It was kind of a lesson in not relying on blind faith to carry you through your problems and to take actions that benefit you.

I missed that south park (got a new xbox game) but I am an ex-mormon and they do have some crazy parts to their religion. Like nearly all religions they are mostly about the benjamins. They do have a very tight family structure and I challenge you to find any other religion that does more for it's members in need. The whole golden plates - joseph smith thing is pretty fucked up though.

They seem well on their way! Although better than most religions, I still don't go for the whole money grubbing thing. I'll consider putting UUA in my Will though.

Questioning religion for free is ok! I'm an atheist and UUA isn't my church. I discuss matters of importance with my intelligent friends of any religious belief whenever the topics arise. Any money that changes hands goes to the movies, bar, games or whatever we're doing.

Winnow: I also have that Mormon movie. It's called "Finding Faith in Christ." I watched it, but I was intoxicated, and don't remember too much. It had pretty good production value though, it must have been pretty expensive to make.

one time i made the mistake of trying to understand how the mormon "prophet" is identified. my best friend is mormon, and she was stockpiling food for y2k because the prophet had told them to on his latest tv special. conversation went something like this:

me: so what, is this prophet guy the head of the church?
her: sort of, he's somebody the leaders of the church select.
me: oh, so he's just like a representative that goes on tv?
her: no, he's somebody sent here by god to teach us.
me: so then why do the church leaders have to pick him out? if he's sent by god he doesn't need some panel of mormon leaders to tell him so.
her: ....
me: what if the leaders of the church pick the wrong guy?
her: ....
me: what if it turns out that he's wrong about y2k?
her: maybe you should come talk to the missionaries next time they come over.

Once, in college, when I was on Spring Break, a couple of missionaries approached me as I was laying on the beach drinking some beers with my friends. I've always been fascinated by different religions and mythoi so I am somewhat knowledgable across the board, and I was more than happy to talk to them. We ended up having a conversation for about an hour, with drunken me trying to poke holes in their belief system and questioning them on why theirs was the one true faith when all religions have so many similarities (creation epic, flood story, etc.). They finally got frustrated and ended the conversation and walked away, it was a lot of fun! =)
