After seeing Winnow's avatar I looked up ostrich on google. Holy cow, I had no idea ostrich meat is edible. I mean probably any meat would be, but look at nutritional info on this baby
http://www.ostrichgrill.com/redmeat.html That is quite amazing.
There are also all kinda of recipes for ostrich on the web. Hell you can buy meat on the web.
I wonder how it tastes like. Anyone ever had ostrich?
Bleah that probably should be in cooking forum, sorry, feel free to move this thread there

Ostrich burgers are teh yum. You can get them at most Fudruckers locations (sometimes a little dry there) and a place in Davis, CA called Redrum Burger (previously known as Murder Burger). I have only had Ostrich meat in burgers, never had any other form.

ostrich meat is pretty good. it tastes quite a bit like beef and it is a lot better for you. there are quite a few ostrich farms cropping up lately around vancouver. I don't really cook it myself at home but I don't have a problem ordering it when I'm out.
there is some other big stupid kind of bird that is supposed to be just as good but I can't think of the name right now.

Ostrich is one of my favorite birds. When cooking it, just make SURE not to overcook. In actuallity it should only be seared and left medium rare.
One good way that I like to do it is sear it in a pan on the stove, and then throw it in the oven to bake on a hickory or mesquite block for abotu 5 minutes at around 350. It will bring it up to mid-rare or so by then. Serve with up like you would Venison or any other rich meat with a fruit compote of some sort and it rocks.
Very dark purple in color. Similar texture to duck, but a bit more elegant if done right.

I've seen it at Fuddruckers too but I didn't notice it until after I'd ordered and haven't been back since or I would have tried it.
I'd give it a try for sure - healthier than beef by a long shot.

Ostrich is VERY good, full of protein.
Too bad its a bit expensive up here in the north.
Chicken and Turkey are good as well if you cant afford ostrich.

Is it true that the unrated dvd version of that movie is like totally different than the one released in the theater and on HBO?

Ostrich and Emu became all the rage a couple years ago in the meat replacement get rich quick genius of america.
People all across Texas were getting herds of Ostrich and Emu saying it was going to replace beef. Quite a few of them ended up charged with animal cruelty after they self slaughtered them because they couldn't sell them, and didn't want to feed them.
The meat isn't bad...but it's a bitch to process, and there's not enough meat per animal to make it cost effective enough to replace cattle. They're also quite stupid, to the point of being a danger to themselves. So there is a lot more animal loss/damage in the herd, costing even more money for the rancher, etc. etc.

It's not like cows are smart, they're just generally docile animals. Ostriches are mean and jumpy fuckers, or so I've heard.

It's pretty much like eye-round. I've had it a number of times but always as an appetizer. It's excellent meat.

Emu farms have been springing up in the midwest as a alternative source for farmers. Considering about every other farming market has crashed for the people who grow it, I guess they figured it was time to get exotic in an attempt to find a cash viable item.
Another type of farm that has started up in the midwest are deer farms.
Venison is some of the best stuff going IF you get it cooked right and that is the real trick to it. (Too many people that write of venison as being "bad" are probably the victims of not having it cooked right).
The other thing about deer farms is farmers can control (to a point) what deer eat. Consider the potential taste of catfish caught in the wild compared to corn fed catfish and the same is true for deer.

You should be able to find ostrich meat at local specialty markets & gourmet supermarkets in mid-sized and larger cities. There are a few places to buy it locally here in Birmingham, AL, so it can't be
that hard to get
I've only had it once or twice as an appetizer, and it was pretty good. I saw an episode of Ming Tsai's other show (Ming's Quest, I think?) in which he visited an Ostrich farm and prepared it a few different and rather tasty looking ways. He also rode an Ostrich, which was pretty cool in a Joust sort of way hehe.
