Who would win between a Great White and a Killer Whale?

This is one of those childhood battles I always envisioned as a kid, ranks up there with who would win between godzilla vs king kong, or transformers vs the gobots. Anyway, I was watching discovery last night and they showed 3-4 great whites hunting seals. The host of the show says there was this one female killer whale that came to the hunting spot quite frequently, but not to hunt seals...I was drooling in anticipation at this point, would I finally see the showdown? Anyway, they said this particular killer whale came there to specifically hunt great whites, yea! This whale tore the crap out of a fully grown great white and it looked like it bit the shark in half. The anouncer then said that after these incidents, the other great whites in the area mysteriously vanish and hightale it outa the area, much to the delight of the seals. Awesome!

the killer whale, no doubt. Killer whales A) are bigger and B) are stronger and faster. Whales can torpeado up through a sharks stomach and the shark will explode.

I know dolphins can beat up on sharks. Killer Whales are the king of the food chain in the ocean but im not sure of their tactics for snacking on sharks. Their brains are larger than the average humans and twice as large as Pils.

A few months ago I saw a pack of killer whales chase down dolphins and eat them, even though the dolphins swim faster, they cannot compete with the tracking and endurance of a killer whale, and would tire out.

The same show, it showed a pack chase down a blue whale and its baby, they seperated the whale from the baby, then even though the baby was bigger than they were, they took turns swimming on top of the whale to drown it. Entire process took about 4 hours. Then they only ate the tongue and moved on. The anouncer says it was a teaching process for one of the killer whales because it had never hunted a whale before, and they were just taking it to school so to speak to learn the process.

Score!

We're lucky that Killer Whales don't like to snack on humans otherwise they'd be the most feared creature in the ocean by far.

Killer Whales are mean mothas!

Especially that torpedoe tactics they use against Sharks!

Very clever these ones! Very inventive with the torpedoe strat!

How come Great Whites dont have strats like that against the Killer Whales? Lack of brainpower compared to the Killer whales it seems!

If both species had the same braincapacity , who knows who would win?

I'm sure good ol "Jaws" could come up with something!

this is easy, you already gave us the answer....killer whale

i think killer whales can actually stun their prey with their sonar if they get close enough in range.

that may be just regular dolphins and small fish though. been a long time since i took that Marine Mammals class :p

so that would be a super sekret weapon for the whale. The whale would also be able to sustain vigorous activity for longer, so the shark better wreck shit fast. and if anything can wreck shit fast it would be a Great White =).

Well, disregarding torpedoe strats and what not, who would win a one on one battle, if the spotted each other at a somewhat close range so they did not have time to prepare any strats?

Disregard sonar and other thingies to detect things from afar as well hehe.

Just say they spot each other about 8 meters away.

I would say the shark would be totally disoriented by the whales sonar. A sharks senses are so fine tuned (perfect killing machine here) that their bell would be rung by the sonar. You see how sharks react when you barely tap their noses, they flip out. Sonar would own them, then the whale could snack on him at a slow pace. Aside from that, sharks usually don't bother anything that will fight back or harm them in any way, so I would still go with the whale without sonar for the ballz factor.

what if the shark had a frickin' "laser" strapped to his head?

Then it might have a chance, but not as much as an agitated mutated sea-bass.

Orca's would destroy a great white in most cases. They just need to ram the sharks gills and the shark will be stunned or dead, if stunned, well...Orca go crazy on that mofo.

Since the Great White is a pretty brainless animal, I would definitely say the Killer Whale.

That's a special attack with a one hour refresh. Killer whales must setup and execute stun cycles with multiple whales much like cleric healing cycles in EQ. Killer Whales are stealing our tactics!

DIETS:
Killer Whales are the ocean's top predator. So they can eat any thing and everything they want. From fish such as salmon and herring. Killer Whales will also eat whales, the most common are humpback, minke and grey. Killer Whales will also eat sharks, there is even footage of a Killer Whale attacking and killing a Great White Shark. Killer Whales are also known for eating seabirds, seals, walrusses, even moose and deer (that swim between the little islands in B.C. and Alaska).

I remember that footage. Taken off the Farralon Islands off SF. They were following a mother Killer Whale with a baby when a 14' great white came within about 500 yards.... the mom beelined for the great white... at which point the great white turned to run. Killer whale hit from underneath (baby was in tow), but the white in half and mom and baby had a nice meal. This was around 97 when it happened, was on all the local news.

Shark would win if it only had a frickin' laser beam attached to it's head.

Dean Grubbs' Interpretation of Killer
Whale/White Shark Encounter

14 October 1997
Dean Grubbs, a graduate student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, Virginia, just returned from the Farallon Islands and updates us on the recent killer whale/white shark encounter.

Ken Goldman and myself arrived to the islands just as the Orcinus-Carcharodon encounter occurred. We saw very little first-hand other than glimpses of Orcinus from behind the rocks. However, I have seen all of the footage taken and heard the accounts from Pete Pyle, Scott Anderson, and Mary Jane Schramm. Since they are still on the island and are not tuned in to elasmo-l, I will make a few corrections to the story the media circus has been spreading and give you the interpretation (in short) of the chronology of events which seems most likely.
There were two Orcinus seen off the Sugar Loaf on the North side of the South Farallon Islands. One was larger than the other but both were supposedly mature females. There was no calf present. The two whales were said to have killed a Zalophus (California sea lion) and were 'toying' with it for a while. A small Carcharodon came on the seen, probably to investigate the kill and try to steal a hunk as is normal had the kill been made by another white shark. The smaller Orcinus apparently did not accept this intrusion with open pectorals and proceeded to attack the Carcharodon (it was most definitely a Carcharodon). It swam through the water pushing the shark along as it writhed in its mouth. The whale was holding the shark anterior to the pectorals. The whale eventually dropped the shark and it sank to the bottom. The shark's body cavity must have been torn open on the left side as there appeared to be internal organs such as intestine trailing from the shark as it was seen in the footage sinking upside down to the sea floor and a large portion of the shark's liver was left floating on the surface. The shark appeared to be completely intact otherwise. The Orcinus then spent time pushing the liver around on the surface but never really fed on the shark at all. So there was no feeding of a calf, there was no ripping the shark to shreds, and one can contemplate at length the cause of the attack.
So, having said this, what does it mean scientifically? Virtually nothing! This is the first time Orcinus has ever been seen this close to the islands according to Pete Pyle and have never been seen feeding. According to cetologists in southern CA the Orcinus in question, which was billed as a calf by the media, was first observed as a young adult female in 1982 though there is debate over the size of the animal. She has been observed virtually every year since and has never been seen north of Los Angeles until this incident. All of the Orcinus in the region are transients that don't usually come close to shore so the two species probably rarely encounter each other so such an incident makes for dramatic media footage and mildly interesting discussion, but is virtually meaningless ecologically. Show me footage of a large Physeter feeding on an adult Architeuthis.
Anyway, that's my opinion and I hope this clears up some of the questions regarding the incident.

Excluding the link to videos above the only time I ever saw or heard of a dolphin fighting off sharks is on the old Flipper tv show. If I had to pick between which would win between a Great White and a Killer Whale I would "Guess" the whale due to intelligence over instinct.

The only Great Whites I have ever seen or heard of were in the Jaws movies and those that burn up in small bars that should not be using pyrotechnics.

Killer Whales can kill anyone they want! Killer Whales cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this Killer Whale who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the Killer Whale killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a Killer Whale totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window.

Hello all,

Bah i am going with the underdog. Great White Sharks can eat helicopters and track down police families from Amity all the way to the Bahamas, They know how to break into Sea World Florida even and eat water skiiers!

All Killer Whales can do is perform 5 nights a week and jump through hoops and hang with penguins and splash audiences and such!

I am fascinated with sharks. More specifically Shark Attacks. In Fact I LOVE SHARK ATTACKS, not other people being attacked but the idea of my own shark attack! I have had discussions with my friends lately. Like if i was given the choice on how to die it would totally be in the mouth of a great white shark(And i am not saying i want to die or anything, just if they said today is the day you are going to die skunki, chose your fate, it would be by shark attack). Screaming and flailing while being bitten in half seems like a much more grand way to go then like say just dieing in your sleep or something. And then after id be gone, people would say wow you remember skunki! he died by shark attack!

Thats why I LOVE SHARK ATTACKS!

Maximum known length is at least 20 ft (6.1 m) and maximum known weight is more than 2,730 lb (1,240 kg), but individuals up to 23 feet (7.1 m) in length and 5,070 lb (2,300 kg) are probable.

1. Male killer whales, or bulls, average 5.8 to 6.7 m (19-22 ft.) and usually weigh between 3,628 and 5,442 kg (8,000-12,000 lb.).

2. Females, or cows, average 4.9 to 5.8 m (16-19 ft.) and usually weigh between 1,361 and 3,628 kg (3,000-8,000 lb.).

3. Individual sizes vary significantly between geographical areas. Length estimates for more than 2,000 killer whales taken by North Atlantic whaling operations show male North Atlantic killer whales average about 6.1 m (20 ft.) while females average about 5.5 m (18 ft.).

4. The largest male ever recorded was 9.8 m (32 ft.) and weighed 10,000 kg (22,000 lb.). The largest female recorded was 8.5 m (28 ft.) and weighed 7,500 kg (16,500 lb.).
