I HATE MY JOB!!!

I work in a call center that is 24 hrs. No reason it should be 24 hours cause the call center only gets about 5-10 phone calls a night, which isn't worth it to keep it open 24 hours, but that's a different story...

So, holidays are voluntary, to give us a break every once in a while.

Now, I have worked 6 holidays in the last calendar year since we went 24 hours: Christmas, Christmas eve, New Years, Good Friday, Easter, 4th of July. As a call center associate, you're only required to work 2 holidays and the rest are voluntary.

Every year, my husband and I go to Michigan to visit his sister and family and they come to Chicago for christmas. This is a tradition that has been going on for many years. I am NOT about to break this tradition, so, because I've already worked 6 holidays, I don't plan on working this thanksgiving. I've already switched my sunday hours following thanksgiving to give me extra time up in Michigan so I can spend a nice 5 days relaxing without having idiot customers screaming in my ear 250 times a day. (yes, I average about 250 phone calls a day on a weekday)

Now, because my boss is a miserable, old, fucking bat who doesn't have any respect for anyone in the office, she's toying with the idea of taking away our friday after thanksgiving (which is a company holiday), because she doesn't have enough volunteers. She's too lazy to come in herself and answer phone calls, and basically, she said "oh fucking well" to those who already have family plans for this holiday. She's currently on everyone's shit list and has been for a very long time. She said that she doesn't work holidays cause she's got too many family committments. Oh, and her daughter and new son-in-law, like to stay on our payroll and come in at their leisure to pick up extra cash, but she always calls the office and tells them to come home so they can go shopping or some bullshit like that.

I am so pissed, that I called my dad and ranted and raved to him for 45 minutes. That poor man, he's probably having a heart attack from hearing his daughter say fuck so many times in one conversation... I'm so sick of customers calling in and bitching and moaning for stuff that is THEIR own fucking fault, and now I gotta deal with psycho-hose bitch boss who desperately needs to get laid. She's a mid-50's year old fat fuck who everyone hates, and only talks to the guys in the office cause they have dicks.

Ok, I feel semi-better now.

*runs outside screaming*

Let's hear YOUR bad work stories!

See you need a boss like me. When I started working here in Winnipeg they had blacked out Christmas off in the areas that I'm in charge of. So I looked at this and said - screw that, staff deserve the day off. So now 2 staff in each area can take either xmas eve or new years eve off. Plus last year and this year I'm making sure I'm here on both Xmas and New Years until closing - that way the staff know upper management is there for them.

I just hope to god this year I'm not stuck here until 11am Christmas day and 9am New years day like last year.

So don't be too glum, there are nice bosses out there somewhere! Just not the hose bag bitch that you have

You need a job at Acxiom :) While we, the older employees, gave up raises voluntarily one year and w/o option the next we are still one of the Top50 places to work in the nation... so that is saying something. One of the best things is our Holidays and PDO system. We get 2 days off at both Thanksgiving and Christmas plus a bunch of others. Our sick time and vacation is rolled into one call Paid Days Off... thus if you don't get sick much or work a lot of extra hours you get a good amount of vacation. New Employees start off with like 21 vacation / PDO days a year plus the Holidays each year. That's pretty good here in the US IMHO. 3rd year it jumps to 23 and 5th to 25.

Another good thing we have is no managers per se. The management is really only 3 or 4 levels (depending on how you look at it) deep. Makes it nice not to have that middle management layer of do nothings sucking up cash while producing nearly nothing.

We have an office in Downers Grove IL (Chicago for all practical purposes), you might check us out sometime. While I don't think we have a call center at that location we might have something else you might enjoy.

Acxiom is the name of a database we use :)

I would love to get out of the call center "career".. it's not even my field, something I used to do a while back and have turned to for a paycheck when I lost my job as a recruiter.

Downers grove is about a 40+mile drive for me daily (one way), which translates into a 2-3hr drive one way... i live in the northern suburbs, (McHenry area) so the commute would be hell for me. I appreciate the thought though :)

I think I can top you.... hehe

I've been screwed two months in a row - three if you count my efforts

I work as a flight attendant I bid my schedule month by month

I bid for Sept AND Oct so that I could have time to go to my sister's wedding. I had the last two days of Sept off and arranged for Oct 1-5 off. It was PERFECT - just right - took two months and a ton of wrangling to do....

My employer discovered a lil bug in the bidding for October and retracted ALL bids - said we had to bid again because flight hours 12-18th were left out - there was such a huge uproar they had to reinstate the bids or face massive sick calls - they restored my bid....without the extra time off I'd arranged for the wedding...I BEGGED my supervisor to please just give me off the 5th, even threatened to quit...but somehow giving me off the 5th effected the schedule a week later....don't ask me how - I had to leave after the ceremony and missed most of the reception

this month I bid the entire month just to have THIS weekend off so I could go away...I made it immovable (don't ask it just means they can't change it) - Thursday they decided it would be cute to roll my days off - because I couldn't tell them the exact person, date and time I called to designate these days I was basically fucked (it's in my palm and it's broken) - They sent me to syracuse where it was snowing and blowing so hard I thought I was going to die and the pilot said it was the worst approach he'd ever done in 15 years of flying and oh yah we had to abort and try more than once to get on the ground

so NOW I get to not go on my trip - oh and did I tell you when they de iced the plane the fluid came through the door and I got some in my eye - I had a really pissy day :(

I'm already working Thanksgiving

but I feel your pain too

Having to wake up at 430 in the morning on the day you have a final to ladle half a glalon of human fecal matter out of a bed and out from under an old person, spend an hour cleaning her up, only to have to do it again 5 minutes before I'm supposed to be leaving.

Heh... some of Acxiom's data may very well be in your company Arch but we also have 3 DataCenters across the country with over 15 acres of raised floor space. The fact that we work for companies that are working together rocks :)

Etain lives in the Northern suburbs and it usually only takes me about 30 min to get there from the DG office but... that's not at rush hour. I got trapped leaving midway once during rush hour AND it was snowing... 25 min trip took over 3 hours, damn I had to pee SOOOOOOO bad by time I got their I thought I was going to die :)

I live in AR but my Team is in DG so I get up their fairly often, love Chicago!

That sounds harsh, Coatie! :( (and Calandra! I'm not touching Akarans....)

I used to work in a call center back in the early 90s (CompuServe pre-PPP/pre-AOL dominance) and we always had problems with shitty schedules for holidays too, it didn't get that much better until I was in charge of the Forum Support team where most people made thier own hours (usually working late for the $hift differential).

Now I'm an IT Project Manager for a bank and in addition to all the swank Bank Holidays we get like 4 weeks vacation. I'm just too damn busy to use it! Holiday time is almost a given though, since it's tough to manage a project when all of the developers are away.

Of course being in IT has it's share of crummy hours too, lots of working late when release times are near and then late hours during deployments. In fact, I'm working tonight from 8PM to about 4-5PM tomorrow managing our 4Q release - no, I don't get any "alternate" days off this week or overtime pay, it's part of the fun.

So keep your head up, deal with the assholes as they come, it gets better.

(p.s. Cala - Do you do crew scheduling though the CompuServe app still, or did you guys finally develop your own bidding porogram? Just curious, I knew the folks that supported it back in '93-'96 or so)
