1. Don't get color, no matter how nice it looks now, it won't in 10 years.
2. Don't listen to anyone who says: "You can get it recolored"
3. Look at other peoples tattoos that they've gotten from whoever you've chosen that are at least 1 year old, 2-3 is better.
4. Restrain yourself from anything above your collar or below your biceps.

Where do you live? If your within a couple hours of Deep River Ct, the guy (Bill) who owns the Fine Line Tattoo Studio is pretty damn good. Well worth the drive for something that's semi-permanent. He's done 5 for me, some dating back to 1983 and they still look good.

One of the rules that I live by is "never fuck with a person who has a visible tattoo on their face or neck." They obviously just don't give a shit and are much crazier than I'll ever be.

The corollary then would be that if you were to get a tattoo on your face or neck, some people might think you're tougher than you actually are.

Also make sure it something you can live with forever. Some Tattoos look cool but remember they don't was off. I have 4 Tats and I'm happy with all of them.

Here is my Pilsbury-like response/advice:

I have a few tattoos, have designed them for friends, and for some tattoo studios/parlors. At one time, I was seriously considering going into tattooing, but instead use my powahs in photoshawp.

I have to agree with Aabidano, I'm not a big fan of colors. They can be a problem after a while.. But it depends on a few factors: Primarily the ink that they're using, and how much exposure you have to the sun. Also, your care of the tattoo for the first few days is important. Lighter colors like yellow and white (for highlights) usually fade first.

I'm not a fan of the generic flash art that lines the walls either.

Fine lines and intricate work may look really cool at first, but they USUALLY blob together in the long run. If two lines are close together, they will merge eventually.

Be sure to look at the artists portfolio too.. Some people out there are horrendous. If you can, watch the artist tattoo another customer and see how much time he/she takes. Any tattoo artist can slap a tattoo on you and collect money... It's important to find someone that actually cares about their work and its longevity.

If you want, email me a pic of what you want to get, and I can probably give you a relatively accurate guess as to what it will cost you and also point out some areas that you might want to adjust.

I've got a candle burning at both ends on the back of my hand that I don't really care for. It's been there since 1982(?) and looks pretty crappy if you look closely. At first glance folks assume it's a hand stamp from someplace.

I could get it removed fairly easily but I won't. It's a reminder of where and what I've been, for present it'll stay there.

I had another covered up 10 years ago, it came out OK, but your wrist isn't someplace to get one regardless.

Once I find someone who's work I like enough to let them do it, I'm going to get a chinese tiger on my shoulder done in single line\blackwork.

I like the wrist. I knew a girl of Korean ancesestry that had been adopted by rich white folk here in the states. She had a "Made in Korea" tattoo on her wrist. Pretty badass. She was a stripper, too.../sarcon where was that guide when I needed it! /sarcoff

The Lou's Tattoo in Clearwater had some VERY talented guys there when I got inked with my ex (no we didn't get matching or names).

Currently, I have 5 tats and will eventually get more. The whole color thing..well, all of mine are in color and the oldest is 10 years and it still looks as vibrant as it did back then. Only rule I have is, make sure it is something that has meaning to you. Don't just run out and get a tribal (blach) pattern on your bicep because you think it looks cool. Get the tribal pattern if you are actually fucking tribal or what it represents means something to you other than a pretty cool fucking design. I try and get one from differant places I visit. The best one I have came from a little shop in Newport, RI where Wizart lays ink..if you know who he is.

^---Sorry about the quality but I don't have a digital camera, just a little webby. This is my one and only, means "seek". I know the general rule is to not get anything visible with a shirt on, but I wanted this one on my inner right forearm to serve as a reminder. To me it means seek your own path in life, don't let anyone elses expectations or beliefs get to you. Basically, dont' sweat the small shit. I've had it about two years now, and I'm just as happy I have it today as the first day I got it... it's just another part of my body now and I would feel incomplete without it.

One thing to keep in mind about where you have your tattoo on your body is the physical sensation you will have while getting it. I have one tattoo on my right shoulderblade that goes in almost to my spine. From the tattoo artist who did it, he said that the closer you get the stranger it gets. I had no idea what he meant until the first part in that area was done. It felt like a cat was scratching my forearm every time he stopped?! It was kinda funny since it didn't hurt, it just felt odd like he had said. Heh, he also told me that some guy went into his shop to get a tattoo on his prick right before we got there. The guy offered him $500.00 to do a small tattoo in that region. It was funny as hell listening to all of the things that the artist was saying about him and about how many ways he had to tell him no before physically throwing him out of his shop.

As for WHAT to get? Get something of your own. You don't have to be an artist and draw it out. For what I have, I had developed a personal "rune" of sorts that has always been added to and never taken away from. I figured that in the event that I ever needed to change it, that would help since I would just be adding to the story. I was able to do a quick sketch for a friend, and once I told him what each line meant he popped it out with AutoCad in 3D which was very cool.

Learn about the shop you're going to get your ink in. The one I used in NYC was one that everyone I knew up there had gone through. We actually had a group photo taken before leaving when mine was still fresh. Think we had 20+ people in that frontroom of the small shop.

This was a topic of conversation some time ago. Telo has been wanting to get a tattoo and has done some extensive research. The tattoo artist he finally settled on is absolutely amazing. I do not believe color would be an issue with this particular artist. He is truely the finest in his profession. My favorite are his miniatures. Posting a link to his website. Enjoy :D

Yeah I was thinking about that, but the one I got I had been considering getting for a few months, and I looked up the design in some kanji dictionaries so I figured it was legit... unless it was some really elaborate conspiracy involving fake dictionaries and websites to get me to get a symbol meaning the equivalent of "I lick chodes" in japanese.

A Hungarian tourist (John Cleese) approaches the clerk (Terry Jones). The tourist is reading haltingly from a phrase book.

Hungarian: I will not buy this record, it is scratched.
Clerk: Sorry?
Hungarian I will not buy this record, it is scratched.
Clerk: Uh, no, no, no. This is a tobacconist's.
Hungarian: Ah! I will not buy this *tobacconist's*, it is scratched.
Clerk: No, no, no, no. Tobacco...um...cigarettes (holds up a pack).
Hungarian: Ya! See-gar-ets! Ya! Uh...My hovercraft is full of eels.
Clerk: Sorry?
Hungarian: My hovercraft (pantomimes puffing a cigarette)...is full of eels (pretends to strike a match).
Clerk: Ahh, matches!
Hungarian: Ya! Ya! Ya! Ya! Do you waaaaant...do you waaaaaant...to come back to my place, bouncy bouncy?
Clerk: Here, I don't think you're using that thing right.
Hungarian: You great poof.
Clerk: That'll be six and six, please.
Hungarian: If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me? I...I am no longer infected.
Clerk: Uh, may I, uh...(takes phrase book, flips through it)...Costs six and six...ah, here we are. (speaks weird Hungarian-sounding words)
Hungarian punches the clerk.

Mine is colored and have had it over 10 years and still looks good. Only color that faded is yellow which is understandable as to why. Stay away from yellow if you can. But the reds and oranges still look good.

My tatoo is on my inside ankle and its a Phoenix crushing a Yin-Yang. My own design. Id recommend if you are going to do this to get something that is you, not something that others have.

All I can recomend is get something that means a lot to you. Otherwise you may not like it at all.

I wish I could find the link, but there was a news (?) article I read somewhere a while back where it was like Asian kids who didn't know English and they were getting tattoos that had english letters - and they would say "See my tattoo? It means 'strong heart' in English!". Funny thing is, the tattoo would say something along the lines of "FIKEUSM" or something equally non-intelligible. Just makes me wonder how many people over here have tattoos of Japanese/Chinese writing that mean something equally as stupid. =)

Wish I could post mine but I don't have a digital camera.

I got the american eagle (the one with the the scrolls in it's talons but i had it done without the scroll) and it's very colorful. It is now over 7 years old and has just as much color as it did on day 1, besides a little orange at it's tips, but the blue/white/red and orange on it's claws have all stayed quite nicely.

It's on my arm above the bicep, and personally i don't regret it at all - but it's a symbol i'll love forever.

I suppose i'll get more some day, but I'm waiting for a tattoo that really strikes me personally, like the eagle did.

Good luck with your search.

Tatoos = lame.

A high school friend of mine got a "Love & Rockets" symbol tatooed on his shoulder back in '87. It has been a source of comedy for us ever since!

If you know the nationality and family name, that information shouldn't be too hard to just find on google. Make sure you read up on it tho. I know my family name has 3 crests, one of which was a crest that was revamped after a certain date in history, the other two refer to the members of the family that moved east and became seafarers.

If you felt okay with posting the name and nationality, I could run a few searches on pages that I have bookmarked at home for you. I can PM or post anything I find.

My favorites:

A kid I know tried to tattoo the chinese symbol for "soulmate" on his arm. He ended up tattoo'ing the chinese symbol for a prefix that means something rougly approximating "ghost" or "spirit."

A friend of mine, while in China, saw someone wearing a shirt that said "real fine boy says since 1987 let's sex."

I have a picture of two of the kids in Nightmare Before Christmas. The girl and the boy with the sucker. Around them I have the names of my kids. I cannot seem to figure out how to post images to message boards since I have no where to upload it too. (I am a message board moron...sorry)

I got it to remind me of my two little devils at home. It means OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS to me and they absolutely love it. I even chose a special font that fits the image perfectly. I found it in a book and it was written by a young kid.

I agree with the others though, DO NOT get a tribal band or something generic just to have one, get one that means something to you.

Have fun and the pain is minor, at least on the arm.

While I am not neither trashy or an idiot, I'm still looking for a tatoo that I really want, even have designed a few in my head. I know where I want it and it won't be seen by many I can assure you.

I've wanted one since I was 25, I'm a *lil* bit older than that now, But, I will get one when I decide on one, I don't care if it happens when I'm 50 or 60. At least I won't have to worry about the colors fading!

I have met many tat artists who will, for the risky, do their own thing within certain guidelines... I had several friends that were into the Gieger art and had extensive work done. It is very creepy, but masterfully done... most artists have surgeon's hands, so I wouldn't worry too much about that...

Now, as far as what to be done.. First, go to a few shops and check out their work. More often than not, you will find something at least similar to what appeals to you. Also, talk to some artists and explain, or even better, show your ideas. I am sure you narrow down what you want. :) If you are still unsure, ask for a temp tattoo. These wear off within weeks, so you can have that "trial run".

GL :D

BTW: My tattoos were done at the same time, 1 on either shoulder(more upper arm)... Tacky, yes, but I liked and still like my choice...gotta get more!! it is addictive!

Right shoulder, Denver Broncos "new" logo
Left Shoulder, the Boba Fett Insignia(red skull thingie) <---was really into Star Wars at the time!! :P

Oh no!! I would hate to be labeled!!!

Care to explain to me what social class or intelligence has to do with having an interest in body art? Here's a clue: nothing. There is, however, a genuine correlation between those of lesser intellect and people who make gross generalizations... but we'll leave that for another thread.

It doesn't take someone who has labeled himself as an idiot to tell you that.

Ah, yeah, forgot about this. Ask to see their "portfolio." If they are really good artists, they will have their own book of tattoos they have done. By good, I mean not only flash tattoos (the crap that you'll see lining the walls of most parlors).

I've got a dragon on my shoulder\upper arm that a (now deceased) friend in Denver did for me. She did the rough outline with a ballpoint, everything else was freehand, single needle blackwork. Took about 4-5 hours.

It still looks amazing after 10 years, draws a lot of "Holy shit!" comments :)
