Holy shit ... when I was about that age, there were like 2 fat kids in my entire school. Poor fuckers were picked on so much too. =( Now I see just as many little heifers as skinny kids, wtf?
That kid is going to grow up to be one of the massively obese adults that lose TV remotes, Cheetos, small children ... in his fat rolls. =o

No, it's just fat, baby.
My 9 yr old daughter developed a gut and I put her on a nutritional diet, I don't see what's so hard about it. Unless this kid has some type of health disorder that makes him fat, this is 100% the parents fault. My wife argued with me and said "If my kids want to eat, I'm not going to starve them". I told her that it was not my goal to starve my little girl, just to enforce a healthier lifestyle, there is a difference. Too many people think like my wife. My wife kept buying doritos, ice cream etc, this is too much of a temptation for anyone, and I am not asking that my 9 yr old have as strong of a willpower to not eat it as I do, so we negotiated healthy snacks to replace the unhealthy ones. Bananas, apples, sliced veges and lite ranch dressing, SUN chips etc. My daughter is now losing weight and I am not making her life miserable in the process.

Good for you! I'm not a parent, so I'm talking out of my ass, but IMO you've increased the quality of your daughter's life. It's so much easier when you teach them good habbits at a youn age. Eating right, proper hygene, etc... Old habbits die hard, so getting her into a cycle of eating better will hopefully follow her into adulthood, and perhaps your grandchildren.
One thing that always annoyed me was hearing "clean your plate". Making children eat PAST the point that they are full is part of the problem. Parents reasoning for this is "Well, I don't want my kid to ask for something to eat in a couple of hours". Well, that's called a snack, and if feeding your children when they are hungry, and only to the point where they are no longer hungry is too much of a chore for you, then perhaps you aren't a good parent? (Children are a gift, and often people forget that when it means they have to get off their lazy butt)
...but like I said, I'm not a mother, and I don't pretend to know what it's like to have a human being that's 100% dependent on me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Then I would love my overweight, pasty, pale Star Trek geek.
But I wouldn't dress up like a Klingon on Halloween and hand out Tribble (sp?) cookies.
I never said "Don't love your kid if they're fat". heh I just said that IMO Krimson is doing the right thing. If I have a kid, I'll love it no matter what it's size, weight, mental capacity or number of apendages.

That's generally because what's left on the plate is vegetables after they've eaten all the high carb and high fat stuff that's supposed to be *part* of your diet, not the entire thing .. like the certain child I know that would live on nothing but meat and cheese and Code Red given half a chance.

I lived off doritos, ice cream and basically crap. Its pretty safe to say I was never and am not a lardass... But then again I was outside for atleast 2 or 3 hours of the day playing football, soccer or riding my bike. From 3-5pm was owning my street on the big wheel, at 5I came in to watch Transformers and eat Doritos.
But shit, that kid is just sad. I feel bad for kids that big... like somebody said earlier, they just get ripped on when younger.

Good job Krim!
I may be big now but wasn't growing up, my Mom didn't keep stuff in the house like sweets... but she would eat a whole freakin' bowl of cheese dip before bed and wonder why she was fat... GO FIGURE! As my wife has never had a weight problem I'm betting my son will not. We do eat pretty decent and hope to teach him well. I think you are doing the right thing. My only suggestion would be to keep some of those things in the house she likes and teach moderation, it will help with the will-power an other desires later on... IMHO take it for what you will.
I've seen that picture before though and I think it was in a medical context. That little boy has something wrong with him if I remember correctly like a thyroid problem or hormonal imbalance which is why he is SOOOOO big... I bet his life is pretty terrible though because kids don't understand when it's really not someones fault, they just know they are different.
Shaerra, sounds like you will make a great mom for a lucky little kid if that is what you want in life
Cheers!

My son is 3 and he loves salad. I never make him clean his plate and I balance is meals retty well. He eats better than I do. My husband is a stick and can eat anything (I hate that hehe). So with his love of raw veggies and his hyper energy I think hes a pretty healthy lil boy and hope he gets that way. I dont deny him sweets but I dont buy a lot either.

Yep, that's pretty much the way they won't get a lot of sweets, don't buy them. And supermarkets these days even have nurseries so parents don't even have to be bombarded with child nudging if they don't want to be. I'll be honest though, a good strong grip on my arm would get me to stop whining for sweets real quick. Public embarassment in the aisle was a close second

I generally don't bring junk food in the house and there's generally fruit on the counter or in the fridge.
Neither of my kids are much for junk food as we've never bought it, just the occasional bag of tortilla chips and salsa. We rarely buy soda. Water, gatorade and lemonade are the usual drinks in the fridge. I'd like to say we intentionally eat healthy stuff but it's mainly from being in the Navy until a few years ago and not having spare money for pre-packaged foods.
One of my daughters (idiot) teachers told her she's underweight, she's just not a fat ass like most of the school population.

You may manage to stay thin but eating that shit is just storing up heart/blood pressure problems for later life.
A high fat diet won't necessarily make you overweight. Don't confuse fat with fat!

Ennia's right. I eat the same as someone who's fat but ye'ole metabolism keeps me normal weight. Fat people are jolly though so I sacrifice jolliness...it's a delicate balance!
The more important question is...are fat people too jolly to flame?...is being skinny an excuse to flame? Flaming may be genetic.
Anyone out there stay up to date on progress being made to control metabolic rates? At some point, I can see metabolism being controlled medically which would solve weight issues.

I read an article last week that they had a metabolism drug and were testing it on lab animals that were losing like 10 lbs/week off it. They say they had an earlier version that was unsecessful because it increased the heart rate, but this one supposedly has no ill effects. I'll see if I can dig the article up.

That would be cool, but I wouldn't want to be the first to try it. After I gained a bunch of weight in HS I lost over 150lbs and kept it off for like 6 years. To do that though I worked out 6 days a week 4 hours or so a day... obsessive? yup but that is what it took.
As my ability to work out due to job, family etc... decreased I cut my calories. Hey I was a Psych/Biology major I know how this stuff is suppose to work. Guess what? It didn't... I could eat 1000 calories a day with almost no fat and still gained weight or I could eat whatever I wanted and gain about the same. Once I got back up to where I was before about 5 years ago the weight gain stopped. While I eat healthy most of the time I don't always. I eat fried foods etc... but usually don't snack (never have) and don't eat much sweets (can't get good German pastries in Arkansas). I do get to the gym every so often and can still lift a great deal so I haven't lost the strength I just can't loose weight without working out.
Case in point about two years ago I did go to them gym 4 days a week for about two months and lost 25 lbs w/o changing my eating habits whatsoever. When I quit they came right back but didn't increase above what I was... strange. When we were trying to get pregnant the first time I went to a urologist who was very interested in my blood work. He thought it was strange that I had low hormones across the board. To some people he said that would seem out of balance but they weren't... they were balanced so I have no ill effects except for Metabolism. So he said that 95% of the people in my case have some problems in one area of the brain, since I had a serious enjury during puberty which corresponds to the time I started to gain weight this was probably the case.
So I went for an MRI then back to the Dr. What did I learn? Well I'm one of the 5% that they can't really explain WTF is going on. I'm pretty healthy, no high blood pressure or any other weight related problems, I'm just fat as my metabolism just stays at a crawl unless I work out very regularly. "Thus diets won't work, you will just have to excercise when you want to loose weight and if you stop it will probably come back no matter what you do" Funny... tell me something I didn't know.
Of course I'm not bitching, some people are skinny, some are fat etc... I think the main point is to be happy and be as healthy as possible. When I can, I'll work out again. But until then I just do what I can... it's my life I have to deal with it. What I can't stand though is those Q!@%!@$%@ suing people for making them fat or parent saying it's the schools fault because they have coke machines their kids are fat etc... GROW UP and take responsibility for your own actions. I think if people would just do that in general the world would be a much better place for all of us.

wrong, it's all about metabolism
Exersize makes you have a stronger metabolism. So it IS about exersize. Those fat people have a lower metabolism because they don't exert enough energy and there metabolism does not need to work as fast. Not eating enough and not eating healthy also has an effect on your metabolism.
But you are right in that some people DO naturally have a lower metabolism as a part of their bodies natural chemistry, however excersizing does stregnthen your metabolism, no matter who you are.
Some people will need to exert more energy than others because of this, however, 99% can overcome a low metabolism.
