Aranuil. I know you do plenty of biking.

I have been biking to work lately and I was wonder if you have anything that you eat that tastes good and might give you some energy?

That or if anyone could suggest what they find helps .. any information is appreciated.

I run 3 miles and lift weights for about 2 hours every morning before work (I get up at 4am). I usually wake up to something small for an energy boost, like an apple or a banana, don't over do it. After my workout, I have a lite to normal breakfast, because you just don't skip meals if you want to stay healthy. And oh yea, I do have a high protein intake, but not the protein diet that Cart alludes to=)

as far as energy/carb bars go, I prefer Clif bars over power bars any day of the week.

I use Carrot Cake or Apple Cherry Clif Bars.

The Power Bar Harvest bars are also good. Regular power bars are fine if it's not hot outside. If it is hot outside, their taffy like texture makes it nearly impossible to eat while riding.

The other alternative is a carbohydrate replacement drink. Of the ones available, I prefer Accelerade. You should be able to pick it up at a GNC. The taste takes some getting used to, but it works well.

Back when I lived in Cambridge (the original :P) and used to cycle everywhere I'd do 5-15 miles a day just getting around. My job at the time involved me arriving at the office at the borderline illegal time of 7.45am. One morning after a rather heavy evening on the sauce I awoke in an unfamiliar boudoir with 30 mins to get to work, a stinking hangover and omfg no breakfast in sight! And let me tell you I am a shadow of my normal self if I skip the day's most important meal. So I stopped off at the nearest conwenience store and bought the following breakfast:

1x Banana
1x Dime Bar (almond butter and chocolate)
1x Irn Bru (can of)

This princely repast was consumed in unseemly haste in order for me to complete the journey to work in time. And let me tell you I felt on tip-top form all the way to lunchtime. I've never had such a miraculous, energy providing, hangover curing breakfast ever. Not even a full English fried breakfast with added pickled onions and bloody marys could touch this combo for efficaciousness.

Interesting eh?

Saying anything is better than grits is blasphemy and will be dealt with by the Sons of the Confederates militia.

mmm if we are going to be on this whole nutrition subject I have a request for suggestions

I'm looking for a protein supplement (bars or powder doens't really matter) that doesn't taste LIKE TOTAL CRAP

and I don't mean those faux candy bars with 5 g protein - I mean serious protein -

any recommendations? I've tried many many kinds and found them all pretty much unpalatable.

I've had good results with the amino acid pills that are sold at GNC. They're rather large, and you have to take 6 of them in the morning and 6 at night. I wouldn't recommend them unless you're actually exercising a lot though. I definitely think they have a positive impact on my performance.

nothing better before a long bike ride than a stack of thick, mushy, buttery, syrupy flapjacks. a plate full of bacon, 3 fried eggs, half a pound of home fries cooked in the bacon fat and a great big mug of coffee for that much needed energy.

Damn, that sounds good! However, I would replace the coffee with a nice tall glass of Hamms. :P

I like Luna bars!

They're all pretty good, but you really have to watch the carbohydrate content on those bars if you're not actually exercising. Yes they're good for you, yes they're made from good stuff, but if the carbs aren't burnt, the bars might not have the effect you're looking for.

If you're really looking for high protean. I use Massive Whey. I take three "shakes" a day. What I do is put one scoop into a cup, then poor a little bit of milk over it then mix it into a thick paste. Then I poor more milk in and stir it up. It's easier to mix this way. I use the vanilla stuff. Anyways, Massive Whey is 21g of protean. Which is 41% of the dayly value on a 2000 cal diet. So 3 a day is slightly over but its not going to kill me.

If you want other things to help for bulk and tone. I use Creactive which is a creatine supliment. It also has 8g of protean. I take this just before a workout. Usually with a light something before my workout. Basically, just put a scoop in a cup of water stir it up and you're good to go.

I also take TribuPlex which is a testosterone supliment. I take it 3 times a day. It is in pill form. For bulk and tone. It also helps with the sex drive ^_^. Anyways its Tribulus Terrestris at 400mg. And other ingredeants. All of that costs me about 35 bucks at mother's market. Don't know if you can get it at GNC but I'm pretty sure you can.

You can stick to just the protean if you aren't looking for huge bulk, but the others certainly help.

powdered egg whites

they're impossible to eat by itself but they can be added and mixed with anything else you eat
and they're 80% protein
I think most protein shakes or stuff you buy at GNC is based on egg whites
