How to question, re: messages

Post by a_guide »

We have cable internet in my apartment and my roommate handles everything about our internet connection. All I know is that our comps are connected and I know how to share files/folders with him. Whenever I have a problem I usually ask him, however, he is a pain in the ass and refuses to tell me how he sends me messages. It pops up like an error message box, usually some kind of insult to my mother, and it doesn't seem to be from any IM type program. I tried figuring it out on my own but I just can't. Can anyone explain this to me, cause I'm tired of not being able to respond.

Open a command window. (Start, Run, type cmd (command if you are on Win98 for some god awful reason))

You will have a DOS window open.

Type: net send [his computer name] [your message]

Minus the []

That will do it.

This is the same service that allows you to be sent annoying popups as well. To disable this service:

Right click My Computer
Go to Manage
Click Services and Applications
Click Services and find Messenger (not MSN Messenger)
Right click that and go to properties
Under Startup Type, select Disabled
Under Service Status, select Stop

Just in case you get those pop ups or are annoyed by his popups.

Apparently there is a new vulnerability out there that takes advantage of the messenger service. At work they are disabling it for everyone by the end of the week. Other than those who have a need for it. I used to use net send all the time in my previous job where icq and things like that didn't work.
