NEW YORK - A 14-year-old boy who was "surfing" on the roof of a subway train was killed when his head struck an overhead beam and he fell to the tracks.

That story reminds of the comedy crap they show in movies. Something like a guy who stubs his toe, then falls off a cliff while hopping in pain, then an anvil falls and smashes the bloody pile.

Oh please. Most people here did things as a teenager that very well could have killed them and just got lucky and it didn't.

wtf? Yes, I did some stuff, but that? I urge to read what he did again, and think about it. When I was 14, there is not a snowballs chance in hell I would even consider doing that for even 2 seconds. That was brainless...totally and utterly brainless.

Natural selection going on here....the kid who does something incredible stupid & dies doesn't go on to have kids of his own.

I read this article about 30 minutes ago, and I'm still laughing. Anyone who has been on a NY subway would know right away this is probably not a good idea. I wonder if MTA will have a lawsuit against them over this...

I think it all depends on where you grew up. I was out in the burbs so never had a subway or train nearby. If there was I wouldn't be surprised if kids do that. You don't think about that when you are a kid. You're invincible and are going to live forever.

Looking back on the shit I did as a kid I would be horrified to see anyone doing now that I am older. Something like launching arrows into the air straight up and then losing them in the light or whatever. Nearly died doing that. The thing is, you don't know your limits until you push them.

I don't know if most of us would do that, or something as stupid. When I watch my 7 year old she kinda thinks she's invincible. The concept of killing , being dead, injured is still pretty foreign to her as she's never been in any real danger. She's also pretty careful since she started standing up and walking.

On the other hand my friend has a 5 year old daughter who since she first started crawling constantly gets into trouble, she will climb on anything, touch anything, put stuff in her mouth, nose, ears and whatever. At 5 years old she had broken arm, multiple stiches in her chin and forehead, teeth knocked out, she unbuckled, opened the door and fell out of the moving car ( pulling slowly into the driveway but still...)
If she was my kid I'd be dead from a heart attack long time ago.

I have no idea where this kind of bravery or stupidity comes from in kids but seems to me like some people have just some natural "talent" or predisposition to do weird stuff. Some live.

How about throwing Jarts (tm) lawn darts at each other? Or making homemade pipe bombs? Or sledding down a steep hill with a rusty barbed wire fence at the bottom? Jeez, we were idiots.

The best one was one of my friends putting a container filled with salt and gasoline in the road and lighting it on fire. I asked him why and he just laughed. This guy ended up joining the Army, specializing in munitions and blowing himself to particles at 25.

Truly amazing that more of us didn't join him.

In my high school, we had weekly M-80s in the toilets and smoke bombs in the basement. Granted this was 20 years ago but kids get charged with felonies for that stuff these days.

Well, I think there is a big difference between being 5-7 years old, and being 14. I think everyone does dumb stuf then they are really little!
By the time one is 14 though, hopefully one has changed some =)

So how are the teachers at Beirut High anyway?

What you guys all needed were the UK government safety films of 20+ years ago that were shown to kids at the age of about 8. They were about trains, building sites, farm machinery and the dangers that lie therein. I swear it was some of the most scarey and disturbing shit I ever heard of being shown to kids that young

Yes, You will have angry mothers with signs saying to make the subway safer. In result they will owe the family 2.7 million dollars for grief.

The MTA will have to spend more money putting barbwire around the edges of the top of the train so that kids do not climb up there.

Then they will have to cover the roof of the subway with foam in case a kid falls and trips while up there.

Finally they will have to apply bubble tape to each overhead beam. If a kid does happen to get hit by the beam it will make a few amazingly amusing popping sounds and gently knock the kid back onto the soft foamy subway roof.

I was about to hop on the "darwin award" bandwagon and partake in some hard core belittling of that kid, but then I remembered one of my favorite past times as a child was sitting on the rear bumper of the ice cream truck that came through my neighborhood as it drove away. I would sit there on the back eating my caramel centered drumstick while the ice cream man drove to his next stop, sometimes reaching speeds of 20 to 30 mph... looking back, I could have been seriously hurt if I fell off, or worse yet if he tried to merge onto the freeway.

But still... subway surfing? Bwaaahahahahahaha!!
